People who take vacations live longer, improve their mental health, gain self confidence, become more productive, all while reducing stress.

Unfortunately, for many people, preparing to leave for an extended period can actually increase their stress level. This occurs because many of us wait until the last minute to take care of all the loose ends before we leave. That's why we created this list for you. A vacation should be fun and relaxing, and hopefully this list will help you achieve peace of mind faster than you can say "south of France!"

1. Mail delivery. Either have the post office hold it for you, or have someone you trust pick it up.

2. Newspaper. Cancel delivery. Ever see the movie "Home Alone?" Newspapers piling up in the driveway gave the idea the house was ripe for the pickin'! Luckily, they accidentally left their young son at home to defend the homestead. And defend it he did. Which takes me to number 3...

3. Don't leave your young son home alone.

4. Inform a neighbor you'll be away. You want someone nearby who can glance out their window and call police if a large white moving van appears out of nowhere and two sketchy looking gentlemen pick up your 60" flat screen for "repairs".

5. Thermostat. Lower it. Save money.

6. Pet care. If you love your dog, arrange for a kennel, or even better call Wendy Sample. Then your pet can have his own stress free vacation.

7. The Fridge. Plan your meals in advance before you leave so you have nothing to throw out. However, if you do, toss the food that won't stay fresh and save yourself the disgusting scenario of having to toss out the take out when you return from your three-week cruise. Chunky milk = nasty.

8. Emergency contact. This could be the neighbor watching your house. Or anyone else for that matter. But let someone know when you will be back and that you will contact them as soon as you return.

9. Credit Card info. Photo copy it and don't lose it.

10. Prescriptions. Fill them.

11. Eye care. If disposable contacts, bring an extra pair.

12. Toiletries. If flying, remember the TSA's 3oz rule: No bottles of any solutions, whether contact, deodorant, shampoo, mouthwash, etc, can be larger than 3oz. They will make you toss anything over 3oz. at the airport and you will have to pay double the price wherever you land.

13. Best Vacation Tip EVER: Are you ready? Here it is, the best tip you will ever get regarding your vacation: if possible, plan an additional day off, at home, before you go back to work. There really is nothing worse than flying home on a red-eye thinking about unpacking everything and having to get up in 6 hours to make the morning commute. You need a day off AFTER your vacation to go through your mail, do laundry, grocery shop and all the other things that fill your day-to-day life. You will be so thankful you did. Trust me on this!

Now you are organized and ready. Relax and have a great vacation!
