DHEA and bone health A recent study examined the effect of 50 mg daily oral DHEA supplementation for one year on bone mineral density (BMD), bone metabolism and body composition in 225 adults aged 55 to 85 years. After 12 months, there was an increased bone density in the lumbar spine of women (but not in men.) |

COMMENT: DHEA is the most common hormone in the body. Produced mainly by the adrenal glands, DHEA can be metabolized into other sex hormones, including testosterone and the estrogens, and up to 150 individual metabolites. DHEA has been shown to not only help bones but also improve mood, sense of well-being, and sexual appetite (improvements in sexual desire, arousal, and enjoyment.) Be sure to have your DHEA-S levels checked along with other important blood tests.
Call Osteomed today and get your DHEA-S test and then The Restoration Shoppe can send your DHEA with your supplement and vitamin order. Call for information 440-239-3438. |

Statins and the Cholestrol Scam |
Author John Abramson states in his book, Overdosed America: "Statins show a clear benefit for one group: People under 65 who have already had a heart attack or have diabetes. But even in these very high risk people, about 22 have to be treated for five years for one to benefit."
What about middle-aged people who are not diabetic and have not had a heart attack? A 2006 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine that focused on seven trials involving nearly 43,000 middle-aged adults concluded that statin use did not cut their chances of dying from heart disease.
Is there any group that can benefit from a statin? According to Abramson, "If they are high risk, statins can be beneficial to people under 65 who haven't had a heart attack, but 50 such men have to be treated for five years for one to benefit. The other 49 will not be helped. And all 50 will be exposed to the side effects."
Older adults have little to gain. The drugs don't help people over 70 even if they have elevated cholesterol levels, according to a report in the Journal of American Cardiology.
Finally, there is no evidence of any benefit for women who don't already have heart disease or diabetes. According to a 2004 article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association which reviewed all trials in which women with high cholesterol had been randomly assigned to take a cholesterol-lowering drug or a placebo, there was no evidence that statins prolonged women's lives or cut their chances of dying from heart disease.
COMMENT: I have been ecouraging my patients for years to stop their statins. But even among these health-conscience folks, many are difficult to convince. I hope that everyone reads this article in full and click on all the references. Get the books, "Overdosed America: The Broken Promises of American Medicine" by John Abramson and "Selling Sickness" by Ray Moynihan.
We have been fed so many lies by the drug companies. When will DOCTORS ever wake up to the scam? When will doctors ever realize that they making the drug companies >$500B/yr by handing out pieces of paper, called prescriptions, that don't help and often cause great harm?
Get your Spectrcell test done. Make sure that your omega-3, vitamin E, Co-Q10, selenium and niacinamide levels are adequate. These are the best ways to have a healthy heart and prevent heart disease. Call 440-239-3438 for your appoinment today. |

Flu Shots for Every Child |
The panel voted to expand annual flu shots to virtually all children except infants younger than 6 months and those with serious egg allergies. That means about 30 million more children could be getting vaccinated. If heeded, it would be one of the largest expansions in flu vaccination coverage in U.S. history. The flu vaccine has been available since the 1940s. Read full story.
COMMENT: The American Academy of Pedicatrics and the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices are completely out of touch with the community in general and have ignored all reports that flu shots are no more effective than a placebo for warding off the flu--in all age groups. This is about selling 30 million more doses of medication and making flu shots mandatory for starting school. It is time for a full revolt against pharma and their doctor minions. Please stand up for your rights and Just Say No. |

Too many doctors, too many tests

The overuse of services in health care probably cost hundreds of billions of dollars last year, out of the more than $2 trillion that Americans spent on health.
Are we getting our money's worth? Not according to the usual measures of public health. The United States ranks 45th in life expectancy, behind Bosnia and Jordan; near last, compared with other developed countries, in infant mortality; and in last place, according to the Commonwealth Fund, a health-care research group, among major industrialized countries in health-care quality, access and efficiency. READ FULL STORY from the New York Times (may require free registration)
COMMENT: "Sick care" gets ever-more expensive. The best way to avoid it is stay healthy. Invest in your health so that you can avoid paying the price later. "Health insurance" is an oxymoron: it doesn't pay for health; it pays for sick care. A $100 of prevention is better than $10,000 of cure. |
