The City of Roanoke will be holding its Summer Job Fair on Wednesday, June 17 from 9 am - 12 noon at the Roanoke Civic Center Exhibit Hall. The event is sponsored by the Renick Group, Express Employment Professionals, and WDBJ7. Please plan to attend this event.

| Apprenticeship Program |

| The state has a program that has been in place for quite some time connecting job seekers to employers through a formal and structured apprenticeship program. Over 400 trades are included and dozens of local employers are participating in the program.
On the surface it appears to be almost too good to be true that a program like this exists. However, it takes commitment from the apprentice and an overall awareness that such an option exists.

The school accountant/business manager/comptroller will exercise leadership in all financial aspects of the school. The position is a key management function reporting directly to the Head of School. Responsibilities include the management of a $2.2 million annual operating budget, direct supervision of Accounts Payable and Receivable, payroll and fee generating endeavors, benefits plan supervision and understanding, taxes (including preparing and filing the annual school tax return or doing so in conjunction with others), understanding of applicable laws, and other duties assigned by the Head of School. Further duties will include coordinating purchasing, procurement, and contract management. Develop financial models for strategic, budgeting, and business planning, both short and long term financial planning and reporting, capital projects, insurance, budgeting, preparing monthly reports and the pro forma, and the management of general ledger and human resource functions. Work with the school tuition assistance/financial aid program. Financial management and accounting experience are required, with a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or similar degree required, CPA or MBA preferred. Experience at managerial level-preferably in an academic or non-profit environment-is desired though not required. Strong computer skills, including Excel, Access, Word, and general accounting software is preferred. The manager supervises one half-time bookkeeper. (S)he needs the ability to formulate and implement policies and procedures, and ability to work with trustees, support staff, administrative staff, and parents, along with an ability to manage accounting processes and also be a financial and strategic visionary; innovative, proactive, collaborative, approachable, team player are additional desired characteristics. This is a full-time position with benefits (salary: low $40s to low $50s; generous medical benefits, long-term disability, term life insurance, 3% matching retirement, and generous tuition benefit for any dependent children attending FCS). | The Community College System has created an online tool that I believe will help the "un-serviced workforce" with their job and career management called VaWizard.org.
This site compiles multiple data sources using complex alogrithms created by Chmura Economics and creates an online environment using new technologies (avatars, video, etc.) to answer all questions in one place. The site received $2 million from a federal grant.
For instance, the site will ask a series of question to determine what industries best matches your skills and interest, then it shares supply and demand data set for jobs in that sector in the region. Then, it tells you the average wage and what companies are in that sector. Next, it tells you how much education your would need, how long it would take to acquire the education, and provides cost of education and links to financial aid.
The Roanoke Connect database is also working on altering its current form to align with this new systems. |
