Greetings!

Don't wait until everything is just right. It

conditions. So what? Get started now.

Time goes by so fast. The summer is almost over! It is back to school and back to work.  For many of us, it is also back to thinking about pursuing our goals and dreams. But it is time to stop thinking and time to get started.  To inspire you to do that I am sharing an excerpt from my new book, Just Get Serious About Success. I hope the stories below inspire you to get motivated and moving.

At 20 years old, Tiffara Steward is only 4 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 90 pounds. She is blind in one eye and partially deaf. Scoliosis left one of her legs shorter than the other, and some of her vertebrae are not fully developed. It would be understandable if she felt sorry for herself, lacked drive, and had no interest in sports. But those assumptions are far from true. Tiffara loves basketball and had an ambitious goal to be a college basketball player. Doing so meant overcoming what many people would call major obstacles. Yet she achieved her dream.

Tiffara Steward

(white unform)

Tiffara is the shortest person to ever play college basketball, but don't let her height deceive you; she can definitely play the game. In 2009, she was the starting point guard and star player at Farmingdale State College in Long Island, New York.  In a USA Today interview, her coach, Chris Mooney, said, "She's our best on-ball defender. She's a really good three-point shooter. She's a great example of what people can do when they're determined to do something they love. I really enjoy watching her. She's a very talented athlete."

See a video about Steward and her incredible basketball
abilities at www.JGSBook.com - video page (it's the 8th video).

Because of Tiffara's determination and playing abilities, she was featured on CNN, where she talked about never thinking she could not do something. Tiffara said, "If you want to do it, go out and try it. If you try it and can't do it, try again. Maybe you will get it the next time." Sounds like great advice from a 20-year-old.

What's stopping you now?  Age?

The number of people overcoming age as an obstacle is endless, including the well known and the lesser known. Here are just three of them. Growing up, Virginia Hudson wanted to be teacher. Instead, she got married at 20 years old and started a family. Twice divorced, she worked as a clerk and receptionist to raise her three sons and put them through college. Then at 53 years old, she decided to pursue her childhood dream. With her sons financially supporting her desire, Hudson enrolled at Miles College to major in education so she could become the teacher she always wanted to be.

Clint Eastwood

Some people start on their dreams late in life, while others continue pursuing them. Award-winning actor and director Clint Eastwood is not letting age define him. At 79, Eastwood directed Invictus, a movie about Nelson Mandela and the South African rugby team. The film garnered Oscar nominations for Best Actor (Morgan Freeman) and Best Supporting Actor (Matt Damon), as well as a nomination for Best Director at the Golden Globes.

Being able to swim is the result of Ada Gibson's late-in-life decision. In an interview for NHS Choices, she said, "I used to be petrified of water. But when I reached 75, I said I wanted to do things I'd always been scared of doing." So she learned to swim. Gibson developed a passion for the water and says "I won't give up swimming until my body tells me it's time to stop." At 92, Gibson is still swimming.  See a video about Gibson and her passion for the activity at www.JGSBook.com - video page (it's the 4th video).

What is stopping you now?  Race? Gender? Other Traits?

The list of those overcoming barriers of race, gender, sexual orientation and other traits is long enough to inspire all of us to engage in the bold belief, hard work, and serious commitment we need to get started and keep moving. They include:

  • President Barack Obama - the first African-American President of the United States
  • Connie Chung - the first Asian American woman to anchor a major news program
  • Mae Jemison - the first African-American woman in space
  • Diane Crump - the first woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby
  • Roberto Clemente - the first Latino inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame
  • Annise Parker - first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city (Houston)
  • Kathy Hughes - the first African-American woman to own a radio and TV station

    Johnathan Lee

    Iverson

  • Cynthia M. Trudell - the first woman to head a US car company (Saturn Corporation)
  • Johnathan Lee Iverson - the first African American and youngest ringmaster for the Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey Circus
  • Antonia Novello - the first Latino and first woman Surgeon General of the US
  • E. Lynn Harris - the first openly gay African-American best-selling author
  • Eugene Chang - the first Korean-American player in the National Football League

There are the thousands of others on this growing list.

What is stopping you now?  Money?

Quiana Childress

Quiana Childress was a homeless 16-year-old girl living in her car, going to school, and working two jobs just to survive. In May 2010, she graduated from University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff with plans to continue studying to become a doctor.

The words First Lady Michelle Obama spoke as the college's commencement speaker, encourages all of us, "I want you to tell yourself that if Quiana Childress can go from being homeless to graduating with the highest GPA, not just in the biology department, but in the entire School of Arts and Sciences, then surely you can overcome whatever adversity you face in your own life."   See a video about Childress and her outstanding achievement at www.JGSBook.com - video page (it's the 3rd video).

What is stopping you now?  Health Concerns?

Cindy Cannon

Beginning in the sixth grade, Cindy Cannon's life was transformed into a continual series of hospital trips, daily pain, endless doctors' examinations, Valium and other painkilling medicines, and numerous misdiagnoses lasting for over 25 years. The medical nightmare finally ended when Cannon was correctly diagnosed at age 40 as
having Idiopathic Eosinophilic Enteritis, a rare stomach disease. Despite her years of unimaginable pain, 15 operations, and continuous medical challenges, Cannon excelled in college and at every job she held. Cannon became the top staff recruiter for a national employment firm before starting her own business.  For more about

Cindy Cannon, go to the Daring Dozen webpage of

www.JGSBook.com.  She is the 4th profile on the page.

What is stopping you now?

I hope the stories of Tiffara Steward, Virgina Hudson, Clint Eastwood, Ada Gibson, Quiana Childress, Cindy Cannon, and the others I listed have inspired you to get motivated and get moving!
