Get to Know a GSA -- Marti Jones

I have lived in Manchester since 6th grade so consider this "home."  I attended local schools, Webster, Hillside and Central and continued on to Plymouth State University where I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Public Management (Political Science and Business) and an Associate's degree in Public Service. Junior/Senior year in college I was appointed by Governor Thompson to the Board of Trustees of the University System as the Student Trustee for a one year appointment.

It was in my senior year of college when I became fascinated with early photography and began collecting antique cameras.  Thirty three years later, I am still collecting and have been profiled in Country Living Magazine (August 2003); NH Chronicle; and profiled on a television show out of New York City called Magnificient Obessions.  I have made many friends who share the same interest, primarily my friend Ruud from the Netherlands who has become my "uncle" and I have had the opportunity to go to two camera shows outside of Paris, France and one in the Netherlands.  Four years ago I was guest speaker out in Washington State at the Puget Sound Camera Club.  If you would like to see a small portion of my camera collection visit www.martijones.com I have also served on the Board of Directors and am the Past President of the Photographic Historical Society of New England (PHSNE) www.phsne.org

GSA Recommendations When Visiting NH Blog
By Jan Moe, Granite State Ambassador, Comfort Inn Airport, Class of 2011

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is a wonderful destination! I assumed before my visit that this was designed for elementary school children; I was only partially correct. It is designed for all of us...children, young adults, adults, and NHGSAs!

The Discovery Center has added a Navy plane; a real test plane that traveled to NH by flatbed and was brought into the Center by taking out the nine large windows at the end of the building. Alan Shepard flew a similar plane before heading to space.

I was a bit concerned when our tour took us into the planetarium at 2 pm. Could I stay awake in a dark room with comfy chairs? No problem. The program, Tonight's Sky, displayed the night sky for THAT evening in NH. The knowledgeable presenter made it was fascinating. It was doubly fascinating when I took the dog out for a walk that evening & sure enough, the moon, Orion, The Big Dipper, planets were all waiting for me to just look up!
