Jupiter Steering Committee
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Jupiter Steering Committee Meeting was held bright & early, 8:00 am this past Saturday, January 5,
Here are the highlights:
  • Sarah Waters introduced to members and gave a brief update on the past month's activities, including the submission of a Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED) grant for funds towards Jupiter haul out and repairs. The grant was received and backed by State Rep. Barrar's office, thanks to volunteer Scott Rickards.
  • Members working on design and fabrication of second ladder from top level
  • Fire safety discussion
  • Discussion of possible charters - determined not possible at this time, not a priority - will work instead toward USCG certification for dockside events (we have list to accomplish before submitting to Guard) and immediate repair/maintenance haul out needs.  A regional shipyard has expressed interested to a volunteer for donating in-kind towards dockyard expenses of a haul out-this will be explored.
  • 2008 events:  dockside, local events will be the focus, with potential for a few regional events.  Yachtstock & Riverfront Ramble both mentioned.  Sarah to follow up on suggestions of Corporate event contacts (WaWa, Harrah's).
  • Engineering:  John Gerry reported sea chests need work, Jesse will order new packing to be installed this winter.  John will also lead a Jupiter Engineering Class on Wed., January 30th, 6 to 8:00 pm.  Jesse Lebovics will lead a complementary Gazela Engineering Class on Wed., January 23, 6 to 8 pm.  Participants are encouraged to attended both classes.  John is also preparing a start-up CD for Jupiter and will give copies of it out to the class.
  • History:  Guild will pursue National Historic Landmark Status for Jupiter by initiating the collection of more primary source material.  Chip Herr reminded all that Jupiter & Gazela are registered on the University of Pennsylvania's History Department "Summer Projects" list for students to undertake research.  Scott Rickards will will contact list of former Captain's or relatives for documents.  Sarah Waters and Ann Preston will work on compiling information from the office and explore Philly Folklore Project for a possible oral history interview of Ken Meyle.
  • Security/Moving Jupiter to Landing Wall:  Jupiter will be moved next to Gazela on the wall during May through August (pending Penn's Landing permission) with the knowledge that she may have to move for visiting vessels.  While on the wall, she must have motion sensor lighting & security cable devices fore and aft on her docklines.
Work & Foreman's Update
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
by Ed Stemmler

Regular winter chores this year have been supplemented by a worklist as long as Scott's arm.  A number of painting projects have been started this year, including the pilot house and the forecastle.  The pilothouse interior was sanded, primed and glossed during the holidays.  The forecastle is being primed and painted, with the goal of having those accommodations available for crew staying over on weekends.   Upcoming painting zones include the hold and dry stores.  The chest freezers are getting a face lift, with the dents earned during the deck job being pulled out and their exteriors getting a much needed paint job.   Folks have also been working on sealing up openings in the winter cover, to keep the Gazela as warm as possible during this very odd winter.

The submarine hatch and coaming have been removed and the opening covered by plywood.  The steel hatch covers are being needle-gunned to remove paint & rust before they get repainted.  The work to replace the wooden parts of the coaming will commence in February.  Patrick Flynn and Marcus Brandt are exploring the options for the wood pieces.  Other folks, working off the float, have been digging out rot pockets above the waterline.   The reason for digging out rot pockets is to try and keep moisture from the interior of our wooden hull.  Moisture promotes rot - keeping it out is our goal.

Gina's shop class on January 27 will be rebuilding the steps used to get on the barge.  The paint locker is in need of replacement and there are other minor projects to be done, including repairing the helmsman's stool and laying in trim around the engine room house.  If you have the time and the skill to help with these smaller projects, please let us know.

The holidays disrupted the foremen's schedule.  However, we're working hard to ensure that leaders will be down each weekend day to coordinate the preservation work.  Deb Peretz is leading work on Saturday January 12, from 9-5.  Joe Schuck and/or Robin Schimpf will lead work on Sunday, January 13.  Lenore has organized cooks on Saturdays.

SAD NEWS
Guild member and shany singer Dan Mendini passed away Monday evening January 7th.  Dan helped orginate a regular "Shanty Night" gathering at the Mermaid Inn in Germantown.  He was honored there last night amongst friends and in the spirit he fostered and appreciated.  Paul Parson's would like to share that, "Dan loved the Gazela, her crew, and all she stands for. As his health had been in decline in recent years, he took great pride in the fact that he was instrumental in introducing me to the new home and family that I have found onboard there. He shared his old stories with me while I happily shared my new ones.  He was a big man....with an even larger heart."

Madd Dogg Charlie adds, "It is with extreme sadness that I must report that Dan Mendini, Shanty Man, died this evening (January 7) at 7 PM. Dan was a co-founder of Chantey Night at the Mermaid Inn and a vast store of seafaring knowledge having served on many tall ships. Although he was unable to get to many chantey nights recently, his presence was always felt and missed. He will be missed. We'll drink to Dan tomorrow night."
