Greetings!
It has been a distinct pleasure to write the Guild's Weekly Updates for the last couple of years.  Readers have helped shape this publication and I've connected to many of you through your thoughtful insight and contributions.  For those who have asked, I will be continuing with the Guild as Vice President focusing on ship maintenance and projects, serving as a Board Member, and sailing on Guild vessels.

However, I'll no longer be snooping around, listening at windows and doorways about Guild events.  I'm turning this pen over to our new director, Sarah Waters, effective next week.  Please send your news directly to Sarah.  Unless things change, the Weekly Update will continue to announce upcoming schedules, events, work plans, and membership news.  Small Stuff remains the Guild's quarterly newsletter.  The web site will be employed more often for schedule and event postings.

Sarah works out of the Guild office (215-238-0280) and is using this email address: sarah.waters@philashipguild.org

Fair winds to all
-- Ed Stemmler
Gazela's Progress
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks to strong volunteer showings on both Saturday and Sunday, the winter cover structure and plastic are in place!  Ed Walsh and the weekday volunteers are buttoning up holes, lashing the ridge to the booms and installing wind vents.  Looking ahead to the weekend, the cover was finished in the nick of time...  Snow is forecast!
Pat Flynn and Gina Pickton will be serving as foremen this weekend.  Gina's class on woodworking meets for the first time Saturday.  Pat will likely have a comprehensive list of tasks for the weekend.
Preservation Classes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We've had a fabulous, and very quick, response to the classes offered thus far to Guild members.   Phil Hamilton's welding class will occur on Wednesday Dec 19th.  Pat's tool sharpening class was well received and Pat is checking his schedule for more opportunities.  Folks are beginning to step up and offer their knowledge in a variety of skill sets.  If you care to share, please contact Pat.

Likewise, if there are classes that you would be interested in and have not yet seen offered, please let Pat know.  Our network of skills is quite large and, by asking the right person, could likely arrange the time.

Ideally, these classes could be offered to the public as a way of raising money and awareness.  One more way to help the Guild achieve its mission!

Bill Thomas sent an announcement of a Tall Ships Sailmaking Course at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding.  It would be a great way for someone some distance from Phila to help out from home.

Bill includes this picture of his boat, whose masts were built by Cutts and the booms by John Brady.

The W.W. Smith Charitable Trust has released their 2006-2007 report featuring a picture of Gazela on the front cover.  The picture, taken by Mike Pettine, was shot during a training sail this summer.  Thanks, Mary, for thinking of us!
