Weekend Work
Downrigging Over
Greetings!
It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is tomorrow!  The year has flown by very quickly.  I want to wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday.  Eat and rest well!

Quick Notes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We've set a date for the holiday party: Friday, January 25 2008 from 7-9 pm.  The location will be the Restaurant School at 42nd and Walnut.  Please hold the date - prices and choices will be announce soon.
Ed Stemmler is seeking pictures of Guild members in their infancy/childhood for the 2007 Video.  If you or someone you love are willing to appear, please contact him directly at president@gazela.org.  Pictures or images scanned at 300 dpi would be best.
Please recognize Pat Flynn and Gina Pickton for their heroic work in cleaning and organizing the barge.  Pat's been active weeknights, making the barge ready for its winter labors.
Also, that big wooden thing that hung out in the barge for months has disappeared.  Anyone know where it went?  The movie producer would love a picture of either the process or the conclusion - send it along. [Ed note - Marcus apparently converted - he's baptized the rudder aft of the barge]
Weekend Work
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pat Flynn and Gina Pickton will be covering Gazela in more ways than one this weekend.  If you can break free from the comforting clutches of your home and help out, they'd certainly love to see you.  The first order of business is to get the winter cover framework installed, preparing to cover that in rip-stop plastic.  The cover work will continue each weekend day until it is fully in place.

Under Pat's leadership, we've been improving the foremen's list as well as the winter work list.  His goal is to ensure a top quality work leader be present for each weekend day per month.  To make that goal achievable, Pat & Gina are committing to a weekend per month between themselves.

The major projects for the winter on Gazela include replacing the cap rail and buffalo rail on the starboard quarter and replacing the sub hatch coaming.  The board will need to approve the finances on a couple more expensive projects - namely, replacing the fore topmast, lowering the sole (red deck) in the hold, and hull planking as needed.

Minor projects include replacing the paint locker, trimming out the engine room and pilot houses, a bunch of cleaning projects in the hold and forepeak, and ongoing maintenance to the barge.

Pat has also offered, to the first 6 respondents, a class on sharpening edge tools (chisels, planers, etc) to be scheduled during the week of Dec 2nd.
Downrigging Ended; Maintenance Begins
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Under Deb Peretz's leadership, with an assist on the topgallant mast from Tom Thompson, downrigging was successfully concluded last Sunday.  Topmasts remain up on the main and mizzen and the course yard is jauntily cockbilled.
Now that the sails and running rig are stowed in the hold, Deb will don a hat recently worn by Nick Horvath.  With Nick's injury, he is unable to serve as the rig czar.  He has yielded that role to Deb.  Once she communicates her schedule to us, you'll be informed on opportunities to learn more about line and sail maintenance.
Thank you to all crew members, both Gazelan and Pioneer, who helped with that massive effort.  I hope it was rewarding to all of you.
