Personal Belongings on Gazela
Greetings!
Haunted Ship wraps up tonight with a visit from Moe Alisha, our own Captain Morgan.  If you haven't caught the show, tonight should be the last stellar opportunity to see the crowd favorites.  After a washout on Friday, the last four nights have been steady draws.  7 pm - 10 pm at the Chestnut Street Mall.
Saturday - Training, Ship Move, Guild Dinner
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nick Horvath will be running the intensive Level I training session on Saturday.  Class time is 9 am to 4 pm.  Please be on time - there's a lot of material to cover.  For crew members who have already surpassed Level I, there will be minor activities involved in cleaning the barge and stowing Haunted Ship gear.  Feel free to hang out.
Mentoring groups will be formed during and after this class, ensuring that the continuity of training persists past this day.
Gazela will be moved back to the North end of Penn's Landing after the class wraps up (approx 5 pm).
Dinner is planned for 6 pm.  If you'd like to bring beverages, salad, or dessert, please do so.  We'll be cooking up burgers and rounding out the meal with leftovers.
Sunday - Downrigging Begins 9 am
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gazela's first phase of getting ready for winter commences on Sunday, November 4.  The day will be led jointly by Ed Stemmler and Deb Peretz.  The primary goal for the day is to bring the running rigging (sails, blocks, and lines) down safely and to ensure that everything is labelled correctly.

There are many opportunities for climbers and deckhands alike to learn.  The day will start at 9 am and run until the crew is whupped or it gets dark.  Bring your climbing harness, spike and knife.
Future Activities
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Downrigging continues until spars are down.  Assuming all the running rig is down and stowed safely in the hold, the next pieces to come down are the 3 upper yards (topgallant, upper and lower topsail yards) and the topgallant mast.  Gaffs will be brought to the deck, but booms will stay up for the winter.
Once all the spars are down, the work on the winter cover will commence.  This work, if you've missed it before, involves moving all the cover pieces from storage on the barge, over to the ship. We replace damaged frames and then construct the frame which will protect the decks over the winter.  Hopefully, the cover will be erected before the weather turns too cold.
Winter projects on Gazela include replacing the coaming of the sub hatch, reefing out seams and caulking the deck, rebuilding the foretop, replacing the buffalo rail on the starboard quarter, and addressing a myriad of minor maintenance issues around the ship.
Removal of Personal Belongings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sailing season is over; it's time to get your gear.  The deadline for removing your personal belongings from Gazela is Saturday November 17 at 5 pm.  On Sunday, November 18, all personal gear not claimed will be donated to Goodwill.  Exceptions to this rule are those individuals who stay overnight during the week to protect the ship.

On a related note: The Haunted Ship crew bagged up all belongings in each bunk in the forecastle, prior to setting off a bug bomb to knock out the nightly pests. The gear in the bunks and the hold must be removed to get cleaned, in case the bugs stayed with the gear.
