There's still an outside chance for Gazela to sail in the Great Schooner Race this October. Scotty is trying to run down his schedule, by keeping the trip to a week. He's looking at departing at 0400 hours on Tuesday Oct 9 and returning to Philly on Oct 16. The office is seeking mates for the trip. If you can crew this revised trip, please tell the office immediately. Insufficient crew will be a reason to cancel the run. |
| Crew Needed
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is a reception on Oct 12 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Six people have signed up for this reception of the Maritime Society. We need a couple more please.
The Riverfront Ramble trip this Saturday is still filling out. Please let the office know ASAP if you are going. Crew musters at 0900 hrs. There is an outside chance that Scotty will anchor overnight - we will inform the Guild at the earliest notice about this. Lenore and Donna have been working on placing a reporter from the Inquirer on the boat for the day. |
| Training Update

The training committee met on Saturday Sep 8th to talk about setting up the Fall and Spring schedules. Among the topics discussed was modifying the Level I class structure to make it more flexible, matching our crew influxes with a mentored approach. This would mark a departure from the last several years, where the formal Level I training occured during the winter months. The new format would combine some of the book learning with tours and demonstrations. Evolutions which require a fully-rigged ship, like emergency drills, line handling, and setting sail, will be taught over the summer season.
The committee will be approaching last year's Level II class to serve as instructor/mentors. Once a sufficient pool of instructors are prepped, the process of matching 4-5 new crew members with an instructor will begin.
Nick will be working on a Level II class format which will start in the Fall and has also begun thinking about concepts for Level III. |
