Gazela Training Sail - August 18
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's so nice when the weather cooperates!  We experienced a world of difference between the previous training sail and Saturday's.  There was a nice breeze from the Northwest which allowed us to set fore and aft sails and head downriver.  Once around the corner, we set the topsails and went all the way to the anchorage near the airport.  On the way back up river, K-Sea's launch joined us and ferried Mike Pettine, as he shot pictures of Gazela.  These pictures, with luck, will grace the Smith Charitable Trust's 30th anniversary annual report.
Gazela heads to a party - August 29th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scott Cointot and our friends at K-Sea were contacted by Urban Outfitters to provide a barge for an upcoming party.  Scott immediately thought of Gazela and the opportunity to build bridges with U.O. down in the yard.

Thanks to his quick thinking, Gazela will be motoring down to the Navy Yard on August 29th, leaving the dock at noon.  Crew are asked to be on board by 10 am, to ensure that the ship is not only ready for the move, but also to clean her up for the party.  The ship will be docked inside K-Sea's drydock and will provide a platform for a band.  Tours may also be given to the employees of Urban Outfitters.

We'll need a crew of at least 10.  Since we may be giving tours, we'll need our blue uniforms for the evening affair.  Please contact the office if you can help with the event.

Gazela will return to Penn's Landing before midnight on Wednesday.

Nick Horvath and Daniel Catchin, working with Ralph and John Gerry, are considering a line class to build the eye splices in this line.  If you are interested in working splices in BIG line, please let Ralph or the office know.  The schedule will be announced once participants are known.

Ralph is collecting crew for three upcoming Jupiter trips:

    b: The  Southern Railroad Group
    c: Lewes Delaware

If you are interested, please contact Ralph directly.

Haunted Ship 2007
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marston Black and Chris Simmons have scheduled the year's first haunted ship meeting. It will take place 6:30PM, Wednesday, September 5th onboard Gazela.
This will be a fun an informal meeting to discuss exactly what form haunted ship will take this year and how the Guild is going to do it. Marston would love creative input from as many people as possible. She'd also like to meet with folk that are willing to volunteer to help out with acting, decorating (sets and lights), ticket sales, PR, and more.  Food will be served, so come down and let your inner spirit out.
It was nice to escape to the Philly Folk Festival for one day this year.  I'm always astonished at how many of our members are involved in running this huge event.  While I went up on Sunday in the rain, there was still a good turnout.  I personally saw Sam Adams, Steve Schmid, and Karyl Weber.  Steve reported seeing Roseann.  Naomi was spotted as was Robyn Schmipf.  It was nice to catch up on news, to talk the committee work ongoing and reminisce about past trips and people.  And listen to great music, while dancing in hiking boots.  Kind of reminds me of sailing with our crew...
Speaking of sailing - John Frederick arrived in England on board Bounty.  They're heading down to Portsmouth to recreate HMS Bounty's departure on a voyage.  Gina Pickton sailed on Amistad to England.  She and Patrick Flynn will be in town on Saturday (tomorrow) to catch up with friends.  Elizabeth Foretek has been delivered to Mystic Seaport.
