SMALL STUFF
SUMMER 2007
Welcome to the summer edition!

This summer has been filled with plans dashed, work parties, social happenings, new committee formation and a look into the future.
PSPG is fortunate to have the core of volunteers we have that keep their thoughts positive and work forcused even in the face of disappointment.
We know the future holds hard work,  bold financial decisions and crew recruitment and training.  Let's place our thinking and energies to the future and stand behind the committes formed this summer with committment.
It takes team work to do almost everything on a ship.  Whether it be the barge, the ship or the tug. We need you as decisions are made as to maintenance, recruitment and development.  It is time to make your constructive ideas known and physical presence "on deck".  The following committees have been formed following the July meeting:
Recuitment and retention:contact Lenore Khan and Ed Stemmler
Maintenance (manuals) and training:
contact Eddie Walsh
Development: Zach Stevenson and Donna Vito
If you have time to serve with any of the committees your help is needed.  Ideas in these areas can be directed to the committee heads.

Development Committee: Donna Vito and Zach Stevenson
          Focused fundraising and program devlelopment
The PR Committee has expanded to include the development efforts for the PSPG.  The committee is co-chaired by Donna Vito and Zach Stevenson. Members include Lynn Yonally, Jesse Lebovics, Chip Herr, John Gummere, Bobby Fleming, Chris Simmons, Melissa Black. The committee is charged with creating the case for giving to the Ship Guild and defining the mechanics of doing so including targeting potential donors and coordinating events to promote the Guild to those donors. A significant part of this effort is grant solicitation and the group is working on that idea now. This team, working with Ed Stemmler, will also support the Board in developing the strategic plan for the organization. All recommendations by the committee are subject to approval by the PSPG board.  We meet every Tuesday night at 6:30 PM in the Penn's Landing conference room and welcome anyone who wishes to join this exciting new committee. If you want to be part of the new wave of changes in the Guild, join us and let your voice be heard.

MORE HELP IS NEEDED DOCKSIDE IN BALTIMORE.  IF YOU ARE ABLE TO COME DOWN, PLEASE DO.  YOU MAY WANT TO CONTACT CREW MEMBERS LISTED ABOVE FOR A RIDE.
Operating Gazela underway each week costs the Guild between $3,500 and $5,000; costs that include food, fuel and officer's wages.  The Guild cannot charge fees from the crew to defray these costs.  We are, however, going to strongly encourage potential visitors in Baltimore to make the "suggested" donation of $10 per person to tour both the deck and the hold on the ship.  We also will be trying to schedule receptions for the evening hours.
Don't forget crew members are asked to bring a snack to feed 25.  Also all food is to be kept in metal containers by crew.  there are extras on board, if needed.  We did have an "uninvited" visitor
recently so please keep food secure.
There is a Jazz Festival running from Thursday Aug 9 to Saturday Aug 11.  Gazela will be docked on the West Wall of the Inner Harbor, standing within sight of a lot of pedestrian traffic.  We should get a fair amount of traffic past Gazela.
FOR THOSE COMING ON BOARD TUES:
There is an education program from 12:30 pm - 4pm that day.  Please arrive either before or after unless you are there to assist with the program.

Education and Outreach:
The ship is hosting a camp session from the National Constitution Center on Tues. Aug. 7th from 12:30 - 3:30.  There will be approximately 16 students between the ages of 7 - 12 with 4 adults.  While the camps theme is "Pirates, the myths and reality" our focus will be on maritime skills, ship board life and some hands-on demonstrations.  These opportunities help us serve the historic community and reach out to the educational community.  Anyone who may be available during the day occasionally is helpful when we need to do these sessions.  We do a short training before the group comes on board and set up several "stations" for the students.
During our "Summer Sail" event we hosted a summer day camp and enjoyed a very favorable response from that school who may want to arrange another visit during the school year.
We are also pursuing a joint venture with the Maritime Charter School and would like
to continue to offer a cadet program if funding becomes available.

Haunted Ship '07

There has been some question as always wether we would do Haunted Ship again, and the answer is YES!  Chris and Marston will be the ring leaders this year, and welcome all interested individuals to contact them through email at HauntedShip2007@gmail.com

There will be a meeting planned for mid-August to begin discussing any fresh ideas that people may have, and begin general event planning.  Some current ideas include the posibility of going to Bristol again as we did in 2003, having a party one or more nights during the event similar to the pirate party held for the opening of the 3rd pirates movie, and the usual Haunted Tour.  We STRONGLY encourage anyone with interest in this event to please contact Chris and Marston. We would like to know what you are interested in, and will put you on a list of contacts, and notify you when the meeting is scheduled if you wish to attend.

With proper planning, and an opportunity to really advertise ahead of time this year, this is sure to be a fun and successful fundraiser to help support all of our Gazela addictions. Remember, hours worked on Haunted Ship do count towards your volunteer time, so come on out and support your ship in a way that's helpful and FUN!

Introduction to Zach Stevenson
Many of the crew have recently met one of our new crew members, Zach Stevenson.  While he is a great asset on board, Zach is also stepping forward to help in the future of the guild by serving as co-chairman of the Development and PR Committee with Donna Vito. Here is a BRIEF Synopsis of Zach's experience.

Zach Stevenson originates from Collingswood, New Jersey. He possesses expertise in policy analysis, landscape ecology, habitat restoration, community involvement, and planning. Zach provides consulting assistance to municipalities and others on comprehensive plans, zoning and subdivision ordinances, and environmental planning. He collaborates and consults with communities, other conservation organizations, and government agencies on projects and programs to integrate growth management and resource protection techniques.
Zach has five years experience with World Wildlife Fund where he worked as Officer, Private Lands and Stewardship Incentive Programs. He directed conservation incentives partnering with private landowners in southern Oregon and northern California including vineyard owners, farmers, ranchers, forest resource managers, and small mill operators. . As a proponent of natural resource education, he developed California science standards-based curriculum materials for educators and facilitated teacher training in the growing discipline of conservation biology.
In addition to his professional accomplishments he completed the Joslin Diabetes Center Health Management Orientation and Intensive Training; supervised 90 young men recently diagnosed
with Type I diabetes; trained twelve staff and junior counselors in health management principles and practices; supervised blood glucose monitoring, insulin dosage calculation and administration, and meal planning; provided youth counseling and emergency medical response; and developed an outdoor excursion program including canoe trips and marine mammal tracking.
As a former NASA Joint Oceanographic Venture for Education researcher, he conducted remote sensing analysis of marine whiting events at the Galbraith Marine Science Laboratory and Caribbean Marine Research Center.
We are thrilled to have Zach working with the Development Committee on our Case Statement.  He brings expertise but almost as importantly, enthusiasm and focus.
One of the joys of the guild is getting to work with someone as talented as Zach.  We have a diverse and accomplished group, you never know where someone has been or what they have accomplished until you haul a line next to them or serve on a committee.

Crew Coordinating Committee:

Prioity issues include increasing the skill level of current crew, integrating new crew into the ship, developing clear procedures and manuals for all aspects of the ship and guild programs, organizing time both in port and out on the water to practice current skills and develop new ones, and developing more consistent funding to repair the ship to assure safe sailing and extend her range to include blue water sailing again.
The Ship Guild Development Committee will be cochaired by Donna Vito and Zach Stevenson.  This group will focus on public relations and fund raising. They will be meeting at the guild office on Tuesdays.

The second group focused on crew training and retention. This group presently includes Francisco Franqui,John Laurino, Ed Stemmler, Paul Parsons and Lenore Khan.

The third interest area is developing written manuals and further training in all mechanical and crafts areas for Gazela. Present group members are Ed Walsh, Jerry Wiegand, Ike Eichorn, Eric Lorgus, Joe Schuck, Marcus Brandt,John Laurino and Annie Dennison.

We also talked about increasing information sent to crew after board meetings and inviting the board members to a social event where crew can meet them and share concerns. Planning weekend and day sails as well as an out of towners weekend are also goals.

All committees are open to new members. Let the office know by e-mail or phone (215-238-0280) if you want to work on any of these areas.
Jupiter News:
The tug "Jupiter" is currently pursuing the Coast Guard Certification as an attraction vessel.  This would enable a more active sailing season and they could charge dockside for visitors.
There is a need for more engineers as volunteers on the tug. Jesse L. is planning an all-day training session to be held on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6TH.
Please contact Jesse or the office to let them know you are planning to attend.
The future needs to hold more maintenance help on the tug.  The training for engineers is a step in that direction.

Jupiter attended the Great Wilmington Tugboat Celebration in July and was grandly received and according to crew sources "everyone had a wonderful time".  The crew gathered $1,559 in donations and sales and was the "Hit" of the festival.
Jupiter and her crew participate in many tug boat events and assist PSPG during Summer Sail, Safe Boating Days and many other celebrations.  We are one of the few organizations who have a tall ship AND a tug!!

ONE LAST THOUGHT:

If you want to build a ship,

Don't herd people together to collect wood,
And don't assign people tasks and work,
But rather teach them to long
        For the endless immensity
   Of the sea.
