Greetings!
One of the many wonderful aspects in this organization is that our people are passionate about their hobby - the Ship Guild.  The dedicated Jupiter volunteers organized and executed a successful trip to Wilmington.  Last week's Gazela crew meeting triggered the formation of three committees, two Gazela focused and one Guild focused.  The crew was very interested in learning more about the Board's work - you will find a report of last night's meeting enclosed.  The crew asked for improved notice about training, open ship events, and trips.

The Guild relies on your continued interest and attention.  Please continue to share your feedback to the office, the board or to the ship coordinators.  And thank you - for all of your continued support and help.
Baltimore Trip
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are seeking a 25 member crew for a trip to Baltimore's Inner Harbor on Aug 8-13.  Brian McNamara will serve as Captain and Scott Cointot has agreed to sail as Mate.  We need a licensed 2nd Mate and Ed Stemmler will stand as 3rd.
Interested parties must sign up through the Guild Office - pspgoffice@aol.com - by Aug 3.   If we get fewer than 15 crew signed up by that date, the Guild will be forced to cancel this trip.  You must be a fully paid Guild Crew member (dues & insurance) to sail; you will need a climbing harness, knife, spike, a navy blue crew shirt.  The Guild will welcome help in Baltimore.
Mac would like to leave early on Wednesday morning or, at the latest, Wednesday afternoon.  Your response will help determine when we can leave Philadelphia.  Please indicate your availability.
Please send a $50 check to hold your spot. We will only cash the check if you cancel within one week of the trip.  The remaining crew will benefit from those generous donations.
Operating Gazela underway each week costs the Guild between $3,500 and $5,000; costs that include food, fuel and officer's wages.  The Guild cannot charge fees from the crew to defray these costs.  We are, however, going to strongly encourage potential visitors in Baltimore to make the "suggested" donation of $10 per person to tour both the deck and the hold on the ship.  We also will be trying to schedule receptions for the evening hours.
There is a Jazz Festival running from Thursday Aug 9 to Saturday Aug 11.  Gazela will be docked on the West Wall of the Inner Harbor, standing within sight of a lot of pedestrian traffic.  We should get a fair amount of traffic past Gazela.
Setting Sail Training
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was a good (26 people) turnout last weekend for the Setting Sail training.  Deb Peretz and Ed Stemmler provided a walkthrough of safety drills and setting Gazela's jibs, squares, and main sail.  The crew had been assigned positions on watches and duty stations for the emergency drills of Man Overboard, Fire Fighting and Abandon Ship.  Those attending were strongly encouraged to memorize their positions.

After the "instructional" setting and dousing of sails, the mizzen was set to let it dry out.  A mock galley fire was extinguished and lunch was served.

While the crew was casually eating their meal, Deb and Ed started putting the screws on.  They arranged a man overboard drill, putting the boat in the water to retrieve a lifejacket.  Deb had the sail handlers set sails and brace round.  They let the crew finish lunch, wash their dishes and entertained a review of the drills.  Then, back to work!  Setting and dousing, setting and dousing, mixing up the order, challenging individual members to call the shots.  Another man overboard drill improved performance.

By the end of the session (5 hours), Gazela's crew was answering orders and performing the jobs well.  Some folks complimented Deb on the workout they'd received - if only we could tape it and sell the routine...think of the income potential!

The Guild will try to schedule more of these activities and add some underway time to the schedule.  Check out the Upcoming Schedules

Joe Gudonis has recovered from his surgery in June, minus four inches of his colon, and is cancer free.

Paul and Mary Beth Tomlinson are proud parents of Emma Tomlinson, who was born on June 13th.  They also have an offer on a new house in Downingtown and hope to move in August 10th.  Good Luck!
Board & Committee News - Ed Stemmler

The Guild Board met on Wednesday July 18th with nine members in attendance.  We have changed the regular meeting time to 6:30 pm on the third Wednesday of each month.
Chip Herr updated the board on the status of the new position of Director of Institutional Advancement.  Chip says that the description will be posted in a number of free fund raising publications, as well as Craig's List.  This job is intended to help improve the Guild's ability to raise money and connections within our region.

Jesse Lebovics presented a draft "Case Statement" from the newly formed Ship Guild Development Committee, co-chaired by Donna Vito and Zach Stevenson.  Jesse asked for desired operating budget and capital budgets.  For now, the desired annual operating budget, based on numbers provided to us by John Brady, will be $500,000.  The numbers for a capital budget will be identified once the new Guild Marine Committee begins its work to define Gazela's hull repair work.  The board has asked that Donna and Zach attend the August 15th meeting to discuss fundraising and board involvement.

The board approved the following mission statement: "To preserve and operate historic vessels."  Further work on goals and objectives will be part of the Development committee's charge.

I will be coordinating efforts to build a Strategic Plan.  This plan will include visions for the future of Gazela, Jupiter, and the whole organization.  The board recognizes that to fully advance our organization, we need to improve and channel the help from our current and future volunteers, as well as develop new avenues to corporate, private, city and state resources.  If you are interested in aiding this effort, please contact me at president@gazela.org
