The 22 crew members who attended our CCG meeting on July 10 had a useful discussion of our hopes and dreams for Gazela. Prioity issues include increasing the skill level of current crew, integrating new crew into the ship, developing clear procedures and manuals for all aspects of the ship and guild programs, organizing time both in port and out on the water to practice current skills and develop new ones, and developing more consistent funding to repair the ship to assure safe sailing and extend her range to include blue water sailing again. Long range dream would be a journey to [Europe] and back, but that is far in the future and we agreed to work on more immediate goals for now.
The crew divided into three groups to discuss ways to accomplish our dreams. The Ship Guild Development Committee will be cochaired by Donna Vito and Zach Stevenson. So far members include Jesse Lebovics, Chip Herr and Bobby Flemming. This group will focus on public relations and fund raising. They will be meeting at the guild office on July 17, and then on the second Tuesday of each month.
The second group focused on crew training and retention along with maximizing sailing opportunities. This group presently includes Francisco Franqui,John Laurino, Ed Stemmler, Paul Parsons and Lenore Khan. They plan to meet at lunch time on July 14 aboard Gazela. Future meetings will be publicized in Small Stuff and e-mail.
The third interest area is developing written manuals and further training in all mechanical and crafts areas for Gazela. Present group members are Ed Walsh, Jerry Wiegand, Ike Eichorn, Eric Lorgus, Joe Schuck, Marcus Brandt,John Laurino and Annie Dennison.Next meeting is to be determined by the group members.
We also talked about increasing information sent to crew after board meetings and inviting the board members to a social event where crew can meet them and share concerns. Planning weekend and day sails as well as an out of towners weekend are also goals for the summer.
Thanks to all who attended the meeting and those who sent ideas by e-mail. All committees are open to new members. Let the office know by e-mail or phone (215-238-0280) if you want to work on any of these areas.
