Greetings!
Jupiter's Wilmington Trip
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The feedback from visitors to Wilmington was that Jupiter was a hit at the Tugboat Festival.  Her crew generated $1,559 in sales and donations, money which goes into the maintenance fund for Jupiter.  Well done to all those who helped bring the ship down and staffed her for all the open ship time!  She returned safely to Philadelphia on Monday.
Gazela Crew Coordinating Group - Lenore Khan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 22 crew members who attended our CCG meeting on July 10 had a useful discussion of our hopes and dreams for Gazela. Prioity issues include increasing the skill level of current crew, integrating new crew into the ship, developing clear procedures and manuals for all aspects of the ship and guild programs, organizing time both in port and out on the water to practice current skills and develop new ones, and developing more consistent funding to repair the ship to assure safe sailing and extend her range to include blue water sailing again. Long range dream would be a journey to [Europe] and back, but that is far in the future and we agreed to work on more immediate goals for now.

The crew divided into three groups to discuss ways to accomplish our dreams. The Ship Guild Development Committee will be cochaired by Donna Vito and Zach Stevenson. So far members include Jesse Lebovics, Chip Herr and Bobby Flemming. This group will focus on public relations and fund raising. They will be meeting at the guild office on July 17, and then on the second Tuesday of each month.

The second group focused on crew training and retention along with maximizing sailing opportunities. This group presently includes Francisco Franqui,John Laurino, Ed Stemmler, Paul Parsons and Lenore Khan. They plan to meet at lunch time on July 14 aboard Gazela. Future meetings will be publicized in Small Stuff and e-mail.

The third interest area is developing written manuals and further training in all mechanical and crafts areas for Gazela. Present group members are Ed Walsh, Jerry Wiegand, Ike Eichorn, Eric Lorgus, Joe Schuck, Marcus Brandt,John Laurino and Annie Dennison.Next meeting is to be determined by the group members.

We also talked about increasing information sent to crew after board meetings and inviting the board members to a social event where crew can meet them and share concerns. Planning weekend and day sails as well as an out of towners weekend are also goals for the summer.

Thanks to all who attended the meeting and those who sent ideas by e-mail. All committees are open to new members. Let the office know by e-mail or phone (215-238-0280) if you want to work on any of these areas.
Gazela Training - July 14
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have approximately 8 people signed up for each of the morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday.  This training is for new and old members alike - in fact, those experience members will be needed to ensure adequate training sinks in for the new members.  If you can help out during the day, please let the office know ASAP.  It would also be nice if a knowledgable person/docent could explain what is happening on dockside, while the training is underway.
Contact the office at 215-238-0280 or email office@gazela.org.  Registration is extended to noon tomorrow, so that the watch bills can be mailed in time for you to get them.
Other Upcoming Gazela Events
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gazela will be open for tours on June 15 & June 22.  Help is needed to ensure the ship is staffed at appropriate levels.

On June 21, Nick Horvath will be tuning the rig and teaching those Level I and II folks interested in learning that art.  For those volunteers who attended Level I class in the spring, there will be evaluators on hand to test your knowledge.   Other work will be available if you want to help out.

We'd like Gazela open whenever possible to continue to promote the ship and raise money for operations.  On days when not otherwise specified, please remember to help staff the ship.

On August 4th, both Gazela and Jupiter will be open for tours during an Independence Seaport Museum event.
