Welcome warm weather, no snow and the start of another season of boating. There is much to do to keep on course with both ships and crew. We have had great classes both on Gazela and Jupiter, and now it is time to put all that knowledge to use!!
For those who noticed, the photo link on the Guild website is back in action. |
Small Stuff: Ed Stemmler
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For those who are not familiar with Small Stuff, the common usage on Gazela refers to the little bits of string used to tie off chafing gear or coils of line. Small Stuff (the newsletter) was started many years ago as an unofficial newsletter for the guild, keeping crew aware of the goings on. Reading the contents of today's missive reveals the small and large efforts by many people, continuing to keep this organization viable and moving forward. Thank you all! |
Guild Review: Ed Stemmler
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is so wonderful to see the large turnouts on Saturday for classes and the active participation in various projects and committees. It's astonishing when you realize that nearly all the work performed by the Guild members is donated.
To enhance future volunteer work and improve the skills available, we have hired Jeff Huffenberger to both teach volunteers and repair some of the open sores on Gazela's rails. Starting April 21, he will take on the repair of the main trestletrees, the port caprail, the starboard bulwarks, and one plank on the port quarter. The mainmast will be removed shortly before he starts, so that volunteers can help set up the work area for the caprail installation. Anyone who wishes to learn from Jeff is advised to show up early and be willing to do anything.
We are also working on bringing in caulkers to teach a 3 hour course and then work on the deck leaks we have. The education goal is to introduce the skills to those volunteers who wish to learn. Once you learn a skill, you bring that much more knowledge to bear on our projects in the future.
The classes being taught by Deb Peretz are our first foray into the public community. We have great hopes for this program and look forward to running more of the same.
We are getting closer to setting the schedule for Gazela's haulout, which is likely to occur in July or August 2007. I expect to announce the schedule by the second week in May.
As part of the Guild's fundraising efforts, we are putting a strong effort into coordinating a Tall Ships Event in Philadelphia with Penn's Landing and the Seaport Museum. More on this topic is included in the PR Committee report, but at this point, I'd like to thank Penn's Landing and the Museum for supporting the event. Donations are being solicited to support the event with all proceeds (after expenses) benefitting the Guild's preservation work. This effort could be very beneficial to the Guild. We need your help, be it connections, standing post, selling tickets or talking to your local representative. | |
News from the "Jupiter": Ralph Onesti Jupiter will have the first training cruise of the season on Saturday, March 31, 2007. We have 13 crew signed on so far, including crew from both Jupiter's and Gazela's roster, and that's a great thing!
The training will include line handling techniques starting at 1000 with the boat leaving the dock at 1100 to return at 1500. "Touch and Goes" will be perfromed on the wall of Penn's Landing to practive the line handling techniques reveiwed on the barge.
Lunch will be provided. Please contact Ralph Onesti at: ralph onesti@msn.com if ou wish to attend. There is still room.
Future events include those normal community service trips and events to which we are invited, along with more training in the following areas:
Man Overboard Fire at Sea First Aid at Sea Boat handling Radio Communications Navigation
Jupiter is still in the middle of trying to find a shipyard so much needed repairs can be effected.

Gazela Crew Coordinating Committee: Lenore Khan This winter has been a great time to come down to the ships and see new faces and experienced crew hard at work on a common goal of making our ships the best they can be. The Level One classes aboard Gazela have been well attended with an average of 20 or more crew learning basic sailing skills. Many thanks to Ed Walsh, Scott Cointot, John Laurino, Deb Peretz, Fran DeCurtis and Lynn Yonally for teaching interesting classes that keep our members coming back for more.
We will be testing again in a few weeks for anyone not on the list who wants to see if their current knowledge matches the Level One requirements (please notify the office if you passed the Level One testing and have somehow not made it onto this list)
While those classes were going strong on Gazela, Nick Horvath was conducting Level 2 classes in the barge with highly motivated Level One crew arriving promptly at 8am for those advanced level skills. Level I Crewmembers

John Smith is now spending most of his time in Florida but is providing office support with phone calls as needed. Bobby Flemming and Ann Preston continue to keep the Guild office going and can use additional help from anyone with time available. As the weather warms, people are spending more time on Gazela after the work day ends. It's a great time to come out and meet new crew as well as catching up with "old" friends. The first dockside event of 2007 is May 24 (Thursday evening) when we need at least 10 crew to man the pre-screening party for the debut of Pirates of the Carribean #3. Chris Simmons and Marston have taken the lead on this event. It is a great opportunity to dress like a pirate and raise some funds for the Guild. Let the office know if you are interested in participating. The weekend of May 25 is Memorial Day weekend and we will stay in pirate mode to once again host Captain Morgan. Gazela will be open the following Sunday (June 3) for the Portuguese Heritage Festival. Gazela then sails for visits in Norfolk and Yorktown from June 4 to June 15. The ship will return to Penn's Landing to host the Summer Sail event with tall ships scheduled to dock at Penns Landing on their way up the coast for the ASTA events. The Crew Coordinating Group has done good work over the winter, making decisions about crew uniforms and other crew garments as well as focusing on recruitment and retention issues. It will be meeting on an "as needed" basis the first Tuesday of the month when there are issues to be addressed. Thanks to each of you for whatever part of keeping our ships afloat you have done over the winter. Looking forward to seeing you aboard in balmy weather soon. |
PR Committee:Donna Vito
The PR/Fundraising committee met Tuesday, March 13 to discuss events. There is a lot going on and it is happening in short order. Anyone who can offer assistance in any way will receive eternal thanks and celebrity status, well.....at least in the committee.
1. Classes on the "Gazela": A mailer has been sent out to residents of 19106 & 19147 zip codes for a series of three classes in traditional sailing skills to be taught by Deb Peretz. April 22: Knots and Nomenclature May 6 : Helm and Watch May 20 : Setting Sail A press release will go out to local media tomorroww and people will be able to sign up online for the classes. Thanks to John Gunmere, Chip Herr and Deb for making this happen.
2. Docent training on April 14 will be advertised, Lynn Yonally will be handling this.
3. There will be a "Pirates of the Caribbean III" premier party on board Gazela, May 24 tied to the opening of this movie. Lenore Khan, Melissa Black, and Chris Simmons are coordinating this effort. 4.Tall Ship Event (or Festival) on Penn's Landing June 14 - 23. PSPG, Penn's Landing and the Seaport Museum will be welcoming several tall ships during that week. The ships will be open all week and we will have several events including receptions. The Guild is leading this event so we will need to provide many of the resources (aka people). This is a major opportunity to make the community aware of our efforts so please help out and keep these dates available.
Planning Committee: So far, Ed Stemmler, Chip Herr, Donna Vito, Suzanna Cointot, Bethany French and Jesse Lebovics are coordinating this. Please contact them if you wish to help out. Needed: a. Donor solicitation b. Poster Distribution c. Media Liason d. Photographers e. Tickets sales onsite f. docents for all ships (especially the visiting ships) g. gate management at Penn's Landing h. Event coordination i. ship demonstrations (on Gazela, Jupiter and the Landing) 5. The guild website: Though it has been recently redisigned, the site is in need of regular updating and routine maintenance. We are looking for someone who has experience working with websites and more importantly who can devote the time to keeping it current. We are always looking for articles, photos and media contacts. Please contact the PR committee with any ideas you have! |

New Crew Merchandise available: Gazela Crew Uniforms will stay the same this year for all open ship events and receptions. The navy polo shirt with the embroidered logo is for sale now for $25. Crew uniform will be: Navy polo and khaki pants (or shorts)
Please remember that it is important to represent our organization well by wearing the uniform during events. It also helps in our safety of visitors. We hope to go to a new color next year for our "formal" crew uniform so it can be matched with jeans.
Optional crew merchandise that can be worn at OTHER times are: red t-shirt with "GAZELA CREW" on back (for work times): $10 red "hoodie" sweatshirt with Gazela picture on back: $30 red "buttondown" cotton short-sleeved shirt: $20
We will also be taking orders for the navy cap ($15) this spring.
Attached is an order form to send in......please include your check for the total amount made out to "PSPG". Orders are due by April 15.....there will only be limited quantities of these items available after the initial orders. Make sure your NAME,ADDRESS,EMAIL AND PHONE ARE CLEARLY WRITTEN. Even if we are hosting an event in which pirate attire is asked for, there should always be crew in uniform on board to help with the safety of the guests.

DOCENT TRAINING: APRIL 14 at 1pm Many historical organizations have docents or volunteers who interpret for the public the history and mission allowing other volunteers to do other jobs such as maintenance, PR, office,etc. PSPG is in need of such individuals this summer especially to help "man" the dockside for both the "Jupiter" and "Gazela".
We are looking for individuals who have an interest in the ships but MAY not want to work, sail or can give just a few hours each year. This may also be individuals who have become physically unable to do the strenuous aspect of our ships. There are many persons in this organization whose skills and knowledge have not been tapped to share in this way before on a regular basis. You may be asked to do one weekend this spring and summer or a few. We hope to schedule a docent every Sat. when we are in port this summer and also place some brochures at the visitor's venues around town to encourage tourists to visit Sat. afternoons. The main purpose of the docent is to stand DOCKSIDE and discuss the history, answer questions and encourage involvement, not to give tours on deck.
The crew will also be asked to give time this summer and tours. We need a large group of docents to share the load so we can schedule each weekend and make our organization known to the public. We hope to gain more contacts with individuals who may want to contribute both physically and financially and become an important venue for events.
Docent training on SAT. APRIL 14 AT 1PM is for everyone who is interested in this new program and who may (or may not) have been involved previously with the ships. We are also advertizing to the public this opportunity. All docents will be required to wear a crew shirt and our "formal" attire.
Please spread the word and COME!! We have an important task at hand, making our mission of BOTH ships more public knowledge in order to keep both viable.
