Summer Greetings!!

It's August already and July has flown by. Lots of visitors have been on board during our open ships and work parties have been accomplishing much.

Looking ahead we have the upcoming training sail and Newport. Jupiter is looking ahead to a fall haul-out.

Recap of July's events
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The month started off with our Independence Day celebrations at Penn's Landing on board the Gazela and Jupiter. Over 2,800 people took tours over that weekend, with several new volunteers "recruited". Throughout the month, Gazela moved between her berth near Market Street down to the Great Plaza for events sponsored by Penn's Landing. The Guild also hosted a special sail with Gazela on Sat. July 29th, sharing the day with Mary Smith and other Guild guests. (Editor: For those new to our organization, William Wycoff Smith purchased the ship and sailed it over from Portugual.)
Jupiter has also been busy. She went to the West End Yacht Club on July 29th and has hosted dockside receptions and goodwill cruises for local organizations. The crew put the finishing touches on the massive fire pump below decks and are contemplating a fixed nozzle for the pilothouse roof.
The barge is in the midst of a wonderful cleaning/reorganizing led by John Laurino. He has several assistants who are making the job go smoothly.
It is wonderful to see all sails on and work going on during both weekdays and weekends. We have made lots of contact with the Philadelphia public over our time at Penn's Landing.
None of these events can happen without the continued committment from all our wonderful volunteers. Thank you!!
5. Discuss new web template. Please go to the New Template Designto see.
6.Discuss any new promotional opportunities including story ideas for sailing journals and tugboat periodicals,etc
Participation has dwindled over the summer. I'd like to get our energy back. We were THE committee last year!. Let's keep it going.
See ya there.
Volunteer Coordinator Thoughts from Lenore Khan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After thinking and talking about how to better communicate among crew, I have decided to establish a Volunteer Coordination Group (VCG) for Gazela. I asked specific people, who represent publicity, education, crew training, office staff and new crew, to commit to attending these meetings on a regular basis. Meetings are open to any Guild member who wishes to attend. If you want to bring up a specific issue of concern or have ideas to improve the volunteer program, the hope is that this will be a good forum for discussion and planning .

Meeting Minutes August 1, 2006
The committee discussed its purpose (recruitment, training and retention of crew and coordination of activities that involve other guild committees related to crew)
  1. Plans were begun for a recruitment event in the Fall and a date has been established for October 7, 2006 at the Sheet Metal Workers Union.
  2. Uniforms for the 2007 sailing season were discussed and agreement reached to add other options to the present navy blue golf shirt. A lighter weight short sleeve work shirt in light blue with crew logo will also be considered uniform. It was also agreed that along with khaki shorts or pants dark navy long jeans without rips would be an option.
  3. The holiday party was discussed and scheduled for January of 2007, with the cost to be covered by those attending the event. A moderately priced restaurant is needed with a banquet room big enough for at least 70 people. Date and location will be discussed at the next meeting. Any crew suggestions for location are welcome with information on cost needed for the location to be considered.
The next meeting will be September 5, 2006 from 6:30pm to 8pm. Any crew interested in the agenda items are welcome to attend. Thanks to Donna Vito, John Laurino, Annie Dennison and Bobby Flemming for agreeing to attend on a regular basis. Meetings will be the first Tuesday of each month.
Agenda for September 5, 2006
Recruitment Event Update
Holiday Party Discussion
Crew Training Plans
Retention Discussion

If you have ideas on any of these items please talk to me (215-483-7917) find me at the ship or e- mail to lenorekhan@gmail.com. I am hoping the regular meetings of the VCG will allow all crew members contribute to improving and expanding our programs aboard Gazela and in the community.

Cook's Corner: Lynn Yonally
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have been very fortunate to have a constant group of dedicated cooks to help out on Sat. so the crew has been well-fed each week. New people have expressed interest and we will be needing cooks in the fall for weekends so have anyone interested contact Lynn at foretekyonally@ aol.com so I can schedule them for cooking. Paul Parsons will be the training sail weekend cook, Lynn will cook on the leg up to Newport and Paul will assume the cook's duties on the leg back. (Lynn will be in Long Is. helping Lillian have a flight on a B-24!!)
Thank you to Lenore, Jean, Paul, Marybeth, Mary ,and any others I have missed, for the food this summer. Thank you also to the cook "staff" who have helped coordinate any events on board with the caterers. This makes every event run smoothly and also helps our image.
The crew for our trip to New England has grown to be one of the largest seen in recent years. Please remember to bring a snack to share for the crew...we will be needing them!! Also, any food you bring for yourself must be brought in a metal container and kept in your bunk area. We will be provisioning for the whole trip so we will have very little room in the freezers and refrigerators.
If you are planning on eating ashore when in Newport, you must sign "out" on the crew meal board so the cook will know for how many to cook. Fri. night (Aug. 25) will be cook's night off (left-overs will be available).
Training Sail & New England Trip: Aug. 21- Sept. 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have reached maximum capacity for the training sail and the leg up to Newport. Thanks for your interest and support! Training Sail crew are expected to arrive on Friday night, August 18th by 1900 hours. Nick will be on board to conduct dockside training and to set up watches. The ship will sail Saturday morning with Scott Cointot in command. It will return to Penn's Landing on Sunday, August 19th.

Patrick Weakland will assume command Sunday night for the trip to Newport and back.

If you will be unable to make the trip, please let the office know as soon as possible. The leg to Newport is full; there are still some spots open for the trip home. A list of those going is on the bulletin board below deck. Rides are needed to transport crew up to Newport and back to Philadelphia.

Jupiter News: Ralph Onesti
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Several important trips were accomplished which will help Jupiter sustain herself. She participated in community service ventures, like the West End Boat Club Cancer Benefit and several Penn's Landing events. The crew also took several training cruises and a dockside first aid class
In the near future for Jupiter, she will come out of the water on September 6 for propellor and hull work, with the expectation that she'll go back in on the 13th.
The Delaware Riverfront Ramble is scheduled for the weekend of September 16. A Main Line School Night cruise, in conjunction with a dockside tour on Gazela, will be held on September 30. The Historic Steamship Society is slated to take a cruise, the Baltimore run October 20-23. Then the second annual Santa Run will be held just before Christmas.
The September haul goal is based largely on your efforts to help finish work that will not accomplished by Hays, Aker, or General Marine.
Please put the Sep 6-13 dates on your calendar and let the Crew Coordinator, Ralph Onesti, know what dates you will be available.
