Baltimore Crew Schedule (as of 4/10/2006)

Always busy....PSPG Public Relations (Donna Vito)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We will spend much of April promoting the trip to Baltimore and Annapolis for the Volvo Ocean Race. We need people to call the media and send out press releases.
Plans for Maritime Day, June 4th, will start soon. It will be discussed at the next Publicity Meeting on April 11 at 6:30 PM in the Penn's Landing Conference Room.
Successful presentations were held at the Pennsylvania Victorian Society and the Union League in March. We will continue to work with the Board and Guild members to schedule more of these types of appearances.
Summer is a good time to schedule meetings with local media as well. We will be preparing a press kit to distribute. A mailing to meeting planners is being prepared to promote the ships for receptions for the summer.
We need more ideas for summer events. We are talking to WXPN about live broadcasts and want to talk to local TV stations about remotes from the deck as well. Please contact us with any and all ideas you may have at pr@gazela.org.
JUPITER Training Sail ...
Date: April 15, 2006 (3rd Saturday).
Training session at 0800 ...We leave the dock at 0900 hrs and return at 1200 hrs.
There will be breakfast and lunch fare. We will start with lines, terminology, and a man over board drill. There will be a training log for you. Make sure you get signed off on your task accomplishments.
This is the start of a semi-formal training schedule for JUPITER. Please keep in mind we are trying to impress the CG with our willingness to treat Jupiter as an inspected vessel. This will become very important in the near future.
IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND, notify JUPITER's Event Coordinator:, Mary Beth Tomlinson
There is a request for our girl to attend a Birthday Party. The festivities for Steam Tug BALTIMORE'S birthday celebration are slated for the weekend of October 21st and 22nd. and will be free to the public. There will be a tugboat parade both days. To our knowledge, such a great tug boat parade has not occurred in this city since the 200th celebration of the Port of Baltimore held back in 1906. There will be a Friday evening fund raiser, October 20th at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
Crew commitment is important and the Steering Committee would have to get in gear...now! Please check your calendars and let me know the interest level. I will field all questions as I am able. If I don't know an answer, I will certainly get it. We would probably leave early on Friday morning. The run would take about 9 hours, down the Delaware, through the C&D, into Baltimore.
Seaport Museum Event - April 30
Deepwater Pilots in the Days of Sail
At the end of the 19th Century, off the New Jersey- Delaware coast, when tall ships sails were sighted on the horizon, jaunty, swift-winged pilot schooners raced one another to be the first to reach her and win the fee to have one of their own captain-pilots guide her up Delaware Bay and River, and deposit her safely at a landside berth. Piloting was arduous and fraught with danger, pursued in all seasons and weather, day and night.
Join Philadelphia author and sailing enthusiast Tony Junker as he recreates those exciting days in a lively illustrated talk that includes readings from his recent sea novel, Tunnells Boys.
Admission is free.
News from the office..........
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once again April is upon us ... and once again we have passes from Cultural Volunteer Managers of Greater Philadelphia (CVM) for Guild members to use in cultural institutions in the Greater Philadelphia area during the month of April.
You will need your Ship Guild membership card as well as a pass to visit the participating institutions. We are not doing a blanket mailing of the passes due to the cost in postage ... we will be glad to mail you a set if you send an email to the office pspgoffice@aol.co m.

To avoid seatime documentation delays in 2006, we will make sure that there are supplies of the requisite USCG form for tracking your seatime aboard the vessels (GAZELA & JUPITER). It will be up to you to track your seatime and get the form signed by the ship captain before you leave at the end of your trip.

The Ship Guild will still sign off on seatime ... but you will have to provide the documentation.
You may not think it matters now ... but if you don't track it, you can't prove it (& after a few years, that gets harder & harder).

The Girard Cadets are finishing up their course of study with us. They did an excellent job of cleaning the fo'c's'le and dry stores in preparation for the Intensive training weekend. Their scrubbing and sweeping was their work contribution during their training....all of them participated.
We only have two more classes:
Fri. April 21 (Navigation)
Wed. May 10 Cadet test of skills

the cadet over night has been changed to: Thurs. May 11 and Fri. May 12. We will need crew to be on hand after school at 4 - 4:30pm to greet them and help stow their gear.
Dinner will be at 5:30pm
6pm - 8pm rotation of classes (We need 4-6 crew here!!)
9pm Movie (Captains Courageous)
10:30 lights out and first watch
The cadets will be keeping night watch so crew is needed to rotate this during the night.
7am Wake up
7:30 breakfast
8am wash down and stow gear
9am graduation ceremony
10am leave for school
We are doing the overnight on Thurs.-Fri so Ross will not have to transport them home. Their parents can pick them up at Girard Fri. afternoon.
Please let Lynn know if you are available or the office. If you cannot stay the whole time but help any part of it...that would be great!!

Dockside Education and school groups
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When we are dockside in Phila or other ports, we often have school groups request time on board. There is a brief description in the "Education" cabin of tours that work for this event.
During a school visit we set up 3-4 "stations" that the groups visit. They can be mechanical advantage, knot tying,history,navigation,etc. We usually divide the school group into smaller groups for these demonstrations which works better for all involved.
If you are on board and a school group requests coming on....please use the folder and information packet....it will make the visit easier and also target the education objectives mandated by curriculums.
There is also a education brochure available to be used in PR releases and for sending out prior to port visits.
In conjunction with this, during open ships we also have available a "children's tour" of the ship which has activities and information geared toward 5-10 year. olds. These are also kept in the trunk in the "Education" cabin. Many parents have praised the tour and appreciated the information gained for their child.
Dockside Display at Penn's Landing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have been given the opportunity to develop a dockside display on one of the unused sign boards along the walkway. We had a preliminary meeting March 17 and gathered several good ideas. Our next meeting will be Fri. April 21...anyone with graphic design background or signage experience are more than welcome....please meet on the ship at 6:30pm.
