PR Planning for the Spring/Summer Season

The PR committee is actively working to promote events this spring and summer for Gazela and Jupiter. Featured events are Maritime Day on June 4th, in conjunction with USCG?s Safe Boating Day, and Gazela?s probable appearance at the Volvo Ocean Race in Annapolis in early May. We continue to support any and all activities on the boats and are looking for help to contact the media, create new stories, compile a new recruitment video and general event management. Our team grows with each monthly meeting. We look forward to seeing new volunteers at our March 7th meeting at 6:30 in the Conference Room of the Penn?s Landing Operations and Visitors Center. Call for more info at (215) 238- 0280 or email me at donnavito@yahoo.com

It has been wonderful to look around on Saturday mornings and see so many enthusiastic faces We have been averaging 30 students at each class, with a few returning crew sharpening their skills and mostly new faces. I think it may be helpful to review how we select a crew for each voyage so you can each think about your sailing dreams and how to achieve them.

The intensive training on April 1 and 2 is a great way for more experienced crew to refresh their knowledge and also meet new crew. The out of towners will be staying aboard, and we plan a pot luck dinner and shanty sing Saturday night which should be a great way to start the Spring sailing season. Hope to see you there!

SAILING CRITERIA:
1. volunteer hours on ships work (which includes all types of work but does not include class time unless you are teaching the class and does not include sailing time)
2. Skill levels to assure a safe and effective crew

What that means is that we will be testing after the April 1 and 2 intensive training weekend and establishing what the skill level is for each volunteer crew member. There will be slots for level one crew and level two (check you manuals for skill requirements) and priority within those catagories will be given based on the work hours you have logged. The more work hours, the more likely you will make the cut for inclusion on you first choice trip.Because we will be sailing to fewer ports this year, that means we may not be able to accomodate all sailing wishes and the work time along with skill levels will be more important than in the past few years.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the crew selection process.

News from Ed Stemmler

We're two months into the new year and already changes are apparent. The salon is looking sharper with varnished highlights and restored storage in the cabins. Teams of people are addressing areas like the bilge, the deck seams and the forecastle. Past crew members have returned to the ship, bringing much needed leadership, strength and wisdom.

The volunteers are benefiting from a revised training curriculum, under Nick Horvath's guidance. The weekly classes have drawn an average of 30 crew, with new members joining each week. Drills and training sails are planned for April, uniting the book knowledge with practical hands-on skill.

All of this energy will be brought to a head for a special event: the Volvo Ocean Race. The Race is a round-the-world voyage of racing yachts. We've been encouraged to participate in April, when the fleet arrives in Baltimore. Gazela will be one of a select few traditionally rigged ships on display in the Inner Harbor. The Pride of Baltimore is striving to complete their repairs in France, just to return for this show. This tremendous public relations coup will bring our crew and ship into focus, bridging the gap between our history and high tech ocean racing.

The Guild needs your commitment to make this event a success. The event occurs a full month earlier than our usual summer tour. The ship and crew both need polishing, enabling us to look good in the eyes of the public. Nick is committed to delivering the Saturday training classes, leaving April as drill time. The board is negotiating sponsorships to ensure that sufficient resources are available to address important maintenance needs.

It is our fervent hope that all of these efforts will yield a successful trip to Baltimore. Please join our crew and make this trip a reality. ------

Annual Giving Thanks in part to our new accounting software, we are now able to set up recurring transactions with credit cards. For those of you who wish to contribute on a monthly basis to the organization, please contact the office with a letter stating the amount you wish to donate per month, account information and your signature. Your contributions are most welcome!

The Ship Guild has also been a beneficiary of an Electronic Scrip community donation fund. You may register your Genuardi's or Safeway club card or major credit cards at http://www.escrip.com The program donates a percentage of your purchases directly to the Guild.

External Education

The Girard classes with our 16 cadets have had several interested crew members observing and helping with instruction. The class meets once a week for 1 hour at the Girard School and once a month comes to the ship for a hands-on experience. Danie Martin, Marcus Brandt, Dave Pierce, Chris Simmons, Doug Buchanan, and Jean Morrison have joined the effort. Anyone else interested in helping to learn the curriculum, etc. please contact the office or Lynn.

If the ship goes to Baltimore for the Volvo Race we will reschedule the Girard Cadet overnight for Thurs.- Fri., May 11-12. We will need approx. 6-8 crew for that event.
