Greetings (Contact First Name),

WOW!  I am truly having a good time enjoying life!!  I must apologize for getting this newsletter out so late...I have been out Living my Life to the Fullest!!!

May is National Physical Fitness & Sports Month, sponsored by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports of the Health and Human Services department. So, Let's Move and get fit as we support the efforts of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in their efforts to make the United States of America a healthier nation.

We had a great hike at East Palisades in April.  Be sure you check out the photos taken by Ian, below.  I have been doing a lot of scouting in search of new trails...and thanks to JB, for introducing me to the trails at the new (less than a year-old) state park, Chattahoochee Bend.  And a shout out to Mike who scouted a new trail with us at Moccasin Creek State Park, which is where our May hike will take place.  See below for details.

This month we also joined Ed, one of our hikers and a member of our
Atlanta African American Adventurers meetup group.  I had never hiked Cloudland Canyon before, but always wanted to...it was great! It was the first time Ed had led a group and he did a great job.  As a result, I will be leading a hike there as a new trail for Hartfield's Hikers.  And, on this Saturday, I will be joining Keeping It Wild for a hike at Raven Cliffs Falls.  Hopefully I can get them to hike Dukes Creek Falls also, since we will be driving right by to get to Raven Cliffs. I am lovin' every minute of these collaborative adventures!!!

A thank you to Angela for inviting me to her church to speak to her women's group about health and wellness.  They were very receptive and they followed up with me for some lifestyle coaching.  They have a community garden that I was considering joining...but...guess what?!  Right here in my complex they just started a community garden, and yours truly has reserved a plot!  Will keep you updated on my first ever organic garden 'green thumb' efforts!

There are some other really exciting things in the making...I will share them with you as they get closer to fruition.  In the meantime, as we continue to make positive things happen and try our best to keep you up to date, share them with your family, friends and colleagues; Hartfield's Hikers, OPALs, Lifestyle Management, LLC, Hartfield's Healthy Haven, Atlanta African American Adventurers and my Lifestyle Blog

Don't forget, in between newsletters you can always go to the Lifestyle Management calendar (when I find the time to update it) to find out where the upcoming hike will be and register.  Know that I really appreciate your continued support.

Enjoy Life and Live it to the Fullest!!!

May Hike

Hemlock Creek Falls Trail
across from
Moccasin State Park
Saturday, May 5th

Rating:  Easy to Moderate
Distance:  4.0 Miles
Departure: 8:00a Sharp

Meeting Place:
Hong Kong Market Parking Lot

5495 Jimmy Carter Blvd

Norcross, GA 30093

RSVP Here only if you were preregistered for Vickery Creek in February and did not make it due to weather conditions, and have not yet transferred your RSVP.

This absolutely beautiful scenic 4.0 mile trail is easy to moderate with most of it being fairly easy. The trail rises subtly, at times quite high from the creek leaving you wondering how you got so far up.  This is a trail I discovered on my scouting adventures.  It is well worth the almost 2 hour drive to the North Georgia Mountains, just outside of Helen GA.

The trail we will hike is actually two trails combined, a loop connected to an in-and-out along the creek to the Hemlock Falls.  As we hike toward the falls, we will be teased with the rustling sounds of the creek during the entire hike.  There are maybe two or three wet spots that we cross, nothing major.  Before we reach the Hemlock Falls, there are several smaller falls we will pass and multiple scenic stops along the way.

Once we reach the end of the trail, where the Hemlock Falls are located, we will stop for lunch while enjoying each others company and the beautiful falls before heading back, taking the trail to the opposite side of the loop.

There is a very small 'free' parking lot, and there is parking across the road at the State Park, for $5.00.  Don't forget, you can go to your local library, use your library card  and 'check out,' as you would a book, a Georgia State Parks, Parking Pass.  Sometimes they go pretty fast, so you may want to check up front and reserve it for pick-up.

Bring plenty of water, a light healthy lunch, a smile and a friendly disposition, and you are guarantee to have a wonderful outing in the wilderness...wow! As always, wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots (please, no new shoes or boots...you will be sorry...break them in first!), and of course comfortable layered, clothing.

Don't forget the Leave No Trace principles to which we adhere... what you carry in, you carry out, with the exception of taking your memories of the adventure, your new friendships, and of course, any photos you may take.

If you were registered for the Vickery Creek hike and did not attend due to the weather conditions, please register your transfer to the Hemlock Creek Falls Trails here , as promised, your registration will be granted a one-time only transfer to a future hike of your choice.

As I continue to try to bring you memorable and enjoyable hiking experiences, you probably know by now that we have finally had to start charging for our hikes to help us defray the expenses incurred. Also, keep in mind that Paulette and I are certified Outings leaders and cetified in Wilderness First Aid through the National Outdoor Leadership Schools' Wilderness Medical Institute.  I am in the process of earning my certification as a Natural Health and  Holistic Nutrition Practitioner, although I have been in this field since the mid-80's, and Paulette is in the process of earning a degree in Event Planning and Hospitality services.   Get Membership info here... Please join Hartfield's Hikers, and let us know what you think of our hikes and give us your suggestions as to what we can do to better serve you as we move forward.  We appreciate you and want to continue to provide you with a safe, fun, memorable and enjoyable hiking experience.  RSVP for the hike here...

It is important that you RSVP for the Hike because we have had such overwhelming success on our hikes, we have had to limit participation to 20 hikers.

Hiking Boots
Get a good restful night's sleep.

Eat a hardy nutritious breakfast.

Stay hydrated! Drink lots of water. Don't worry about having to use the bathroom...it is not an issue!

Wear layered clothing made of light quick drying fabric.  Stay away from cotton...it holds moisture.

Wear sturdy comfortable shoes or hiking boots.  Never wear new boots or shoes on a hike...you will be sorry! Break them in first.

Pack healthy snacks and a light healthy lunch.

Slow down, rest if necessary, stop if tired. Don't push yourself. On our hikes we are as fast as the slowest person.

Follow the Leave No Trace Principles.  Whatever you take in you take out.  Our motto is we only take photographs and only leave with great memories that we cherish!
