Greetings (Contact First Name),

First, have you compiled your goals for 2012 yet?

I absolutely urge you to do so...mine are already manifesting!  After you write them down, envision them, edit them as you progress, and enjoy the achievements!

As we move forward to celebrate Black History month and honor those that have contributed to American history and the history of blacks in America, I want to take this time to also honor you and others who are making history and are living legends!

You and others, in your own right are history makers and I believe your achievements should not be overlooked.  Your story may not make the history books, but what is more important is that you are creating a notable legacy for your family.  It could be something as simple as your unique experiences when you are out on the hiking trails with a group of African Americans and/or some other life changing experience. It might be how someone or something changed your life direction, or other self discoveries.  Read more about this on my Lifestyle Blog.

On that note, the hike for February will be a Black History treat! See below for more information.

FYI...things are still moving at lightning speed!  I appreciate you for your continued support.  We are making positive things happen and you can keep up with us through this newsletter and the web sites.  Share them with your family, friends and colleagues; Hartfield's Hikers, OPALs, Lifestyle Management, LLC, Hartfield's Healthy Haven, Atlanta African American Adventurers and my Lifestyle Blog.

Don't forget, in between newsletters you can always go to the Lifestyle Management calendar to find out where the upcoming hike will be and register.  Come on and get on this train...it is moving...don't get left behind,  join me and others who are 'Living Life to the Fullest' and will Excel in 2012!!!

Enjoy the newsletter...

 February Hike

Sweetwater Creek

Saturday, February 4th

Rating:  Easy to Moderate
Distance:  4.0 Miles
Departure: 8:00a Sharp

Meeting Place:
IHOP Parking Lot

970 Thornton Road

Lithia Springs, GA  30122-2622

Sweetwater Creek is a peaceful tract of wilderness only minutes from bustling downtown Atlanta.  There are actually 4 trails.  We will hike the Red and Blue trails that will be about 4 miles total. On the trails, we will wind through several lovely stream coves, a stretch of the whitewater rapids and follow the ridges overlooking Sweetwater Creek. We will pass the New Manchester textile mill ruins where we will get a special tour down into the ruins (limited to 25) and a history lesson from Park Ranger Don Scarbough. The mill, one of the largest factories in Georgia, was destroyed in 1864 by Union General William T. Sherman's troops.

I will tell you that we can be proud to know that not only did enslaved workers build the mill more than 150 years ago, they also made/manufactured the bricks.  We should take pride in the skills of our forefathers.  The building stood 5 stories high and was the tallest in Atlanta at the time.  I suggest you focus on the workmanship that apparently was so superior that after being blown up during the civil war, these ruins you will see still remain after 150+ years.

Next month, as we celebrate Women's History month, we will hike the Vickery Creek trail for more history and learn the associations with Sweetwater Creek.

As always, wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and of course comfortable layered, clothing.  Bring a broad smile, great attitude, water, snacks and your lunch.  Please eat a healthy breakfast to help sustain your energy. Bring money to help pay your carpool driver for gas and parking, $10 is sufficient.

Also, as we continue to bring you memorable and enjoyable hiking experiences this year, we ask you for your support to help us defray the expenses we incur.  Please make a donation to Hartfield's Hikers to help us out and let us know you appreciate what we do as we continue to provide you with a safe, fun, memorable and enjoyable hiking experience.   You can donate right here, now.

It is important that you RSVP because we have had such overwhelming success on our hikes, we are going to have to limit participation to no more than 25.

Hiking Tips

Hiking Boots
Get a good restful night's sleep.

Eat a hardy nutritious breakfast.

Stay hydrated! Drink lots of water. Don't worry about having to use the bathroom...it is not an issue...believe me!

Wear layered clothing made of light quick drying fabric.  Stay away from cotton...it holds moisture.

Wear sturdy comfortable shoes or hiking boots.  Never wear new boots or shoes on a hike...you will be sorry! Break them in first.

Pack healthy snacks and a light healthy lunch.

Slow down, rest if necessary, stop if tired. Don't push yourself. On our hikes we are as fast as the slowest person.

Follow the Leave No Trace Principles.  Whatever you take in you take out.  Our motto is we only take photographs and only leave with great memories that we cherish!
