Greetings (Contact First Name),

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends!  I surely enjoyed myself with another 100% organic home-cooked meal.  I am really getting into this organic holiday meal scenario...although I have to admit I prepare and eat organic about 90% most of the time.

Anyway, following my recent 'Living Life to the Fullest' event, I have had some hikers and friends ask me what I am doing to keep my energy level up all the time and not get stiffness in my joints after the hikes, especially at my age (63)! Also, please know that I do not take any prescribed medications or drugs, including no over-the-counter medications of any kind!

Well, you may know that I am the former owner of the A'CEE Natural Foods store chain when I was in Detroit.  I had two health food stores, a sports nutrition store and a cafe.  Since selling the stores, I always have people ask my opinion on various natural health remedies.  As a result, I have finally started my virtual health food store...Hartfield's Healthy Haven. And, I am also in the process of becoming a Certified Natural Health and Holistic Nutrition Practitioner...how about those (organic) apples!!!

I share this with you because as we close out 2011 and prepare ourselves for 2012 to really excel, I believe better health should be on top of our list of New Year Resolutions, and I am here to help you 'Live Your Life to the Fullest!!!' through better health which can actually lead to additional wealth.

Plan to join us as we explore new trails on our monthly hikes, Cumberland Island in January, the Black Boaters Summit in July and other exciting adventures yet to be posted.  And, don't forget about preparing yourself to join me as we hike the Grand Canyon to celebrate my 65th birthday in 2013!!!

Enjoy the newsletter...

Hartfield's Hikers meeting place is inside the park near the west gate by the parking lot near the restrooms, behind Confederate Hall at the base of the mountain...our usual place.

Keeping It Wild Keeping It Wild meeting place is in the park in the parking lot of the Grist Mill, (get Park Map) look for KIW banner. RSVP Here for the 10a hike.  Expect a slow pace to explore the Cherokee Trail, stopping at the Quarry Exhibit and covered bridge. Each hike is scheduled to leave promptly at designated time. Late arrivals, plan to enjoy the park on your own.  (Get Trail Map

We will hike the Cherokee Trail which is 5 miles long, but due to maintenance the trail has been rerouted and therefore, I think a little less than 5 miles, and as a result we will have to detour to the connector trail to complete the hike.  The trail explores much of the Natural District around the base of Stone Mountain.((Get Trail Map)

As always, wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and of course comfortable layered clothing.  Bring water and snacks. According to Weather.com the forecast is mostly sunny with a high of 56 degrees. Bring water and snacks.

Unless you have a park pass or want to pay $10 to park, you can opt to park at the Stone Mountain MARTA Park & Ride lot for free.  It is located off Manor or W Mountain between 4th and 5th streets.  It is a very short walk to the walk-through gate, we will be straight ahead in the open area waiting for you. Hiking Tips

Hiking Boots
Get a good restful night's sleep.

Eat a hardy nutritious breakfast.

Stay hydrated! Drink lots of water. Don't worry about having to use the bathroom...it is not an issue...believe me!

Wear layered clothing made of light quick drying fabric.  Stay away from cotton...it holds moisture.

Wear sturdy comfortable shoes or hiking boots.  Never wear new boots or shoes on a hike...you will be sorry! Break them in first.

Pack healthy snacks and a light healthy lunch.

Slow down, rest if necessary, stop if tired. Don't push yourself. On our hikes we are as fast as the slowest person.

Follow the Leave No Trace Principles.  Whatever you take in you take out.  Our motto is we only take photographs and only leave with great memories that we cherish!

Blood Mountain Hike

GA Forest Watch Blood Mtn Hike Group
Click for Photo Album

This hike with the GA Forest Watch to Blood Mountain was a new trail for me.  It is an 8-mile challenging hike up to the top from a different trail head.  This is definitely one for the more advanced hikers...a 4th Saturday hike.

You will see it on the calendar for next year.  We are also exploring other trails to introduce to you.

Special Note: It is not that the photo is not clear. We were in very thick fog at the top of the mountains.
