Hiking is the easiest and least expensive outdoor recreation activity, according to the American Hiking Society, and the mental health benefits are as just as bountiful as the physical ones.

Celebrating Black History Month
& Super Bowl XLV
Greetings!

As we celebrate Black History Month, I celebrate you.  You too, are making history in your own way.  Because of the work you do...for a living and in the community, you are making a difference in the lives of those you touch and beyond as a result of the ripple affect.  Additionally, I celebrate you for helping me in my quest to provide opportunities for men and women to explore and enjoy the great outdoors in a friendly, fun and fitness oriented environment...hiking and other adventurous activities.

We participated in our first Cumberland Island service project, celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the Georgia Conservancy.   It was awesome...view the photos here, here and here (3 different sets of photos).

The February hike will be in conjunction with the Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, led by Ranger Tyrone Burkette.  We will plan to trek 10 of the 20 mile hike.   So, please come prepared with layered clothing, comfortable shoes, snacks, lunch and of course, plenty of water.

This is their 4th Annual Super Bowl hike. At the end of the 20 miles, they have a potluck.  If you care to participate in the potluck, you are asked to bring a healthy, vegetarian dish.  If you so choose, you can wait and join the 20 mile hikers in the potluck or return to do so.

Ranger Burkette is going to share with us some fascinating history about the area.   See meeting details below.

February Hike

Arabia Mountain

Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve

Saturday, February 5

Rated: Moderate

Distance: 10 miles

Meeting Time:  8:00 a.m.

Hike Start Time:  9:00a.m. SHARP!

Meeting Location:  4530 Lyons Road

Lithonia, GA 30038

This is our First Annual 'Super Bowl Hike.'  We are joining Ranger Burkette and the Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve

in their 4th Annual Super Bowl Hike. The trail is primarily through the woods, not just on the bald mountain as depicted in the photo.

This is the time of year when a lot of us have made New Year resolutions to become healthier and more fit, and are looking for fun and adventurous ways to keep us on track...well, this is your chance to stay on course!  Join us for this fun and adventurous hike led by Ranger Tyrone Burkette.  He will continue on the path to make it a 20 mile hike, of which you are welcomed to join, but we will do only 10 miles this year.  We will plan to do the 20 miles next year...

The nucleus of the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area is Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve; a DeKalb County Park comprised of 2,000 acres of granite outcrop, wetlands, pine and oak forests, streams, and a lake.  The hike is rated moderate more so for the length rather than the terrain.

Get more information about Arabia Mountain and RSVP

Good Hiking & Health Tips

Hiking
A hiking stick or trekking poles are good to have when the trail is rated moderate or higher. They really work especially well when you are going down hill.  They can take a lot of stress off of your knees, especially if you are a few pounds overweight.

Health
Cold weather foods and snacks for hiking...  Calories are units of heat, which is why you use more of them in winter than in summer. That is why a bowl of oatmeal before you hike helps to keep you moving and also helps to keep you warm.

Granola, Oats/Other grains, Raisins & Peanuts/other nuts, (GORP) is considered the ideal energizing snack food for hikers.  It is really your own homemade trail mix.

There is NO COST to become a basic member or friend of Hartfield's Hikers and to continue receiving our newsletters and joining us on our monthly hikes.

We love what we do and are dedicated to keeping it going. As a result of hiker inquiries and increased expenses, we are seriously contemplating a fee to cover our expenses. What are your thoughts?  Currently we have the 'Supporting' member subscriptions for only $10 a year to help us with ongoing operational expenses.

Supporting member subscriptions will gain added value as we expand and plan more trips, of which sometimes the space is limited, reach out to our partners, sponsors and advertisers for special discounts and other added benefits. Supporting members will be the first to receive the added value and benefits from the relationships we form.

Please accept our invitation to become a Supporting Member subscriber now, before the fees increase, by clicking below.
