Tell Us What You Think!

We continuously strive to not only work in a spirit of excellence, but also in a harmonious environment.  To accomplish this and ensure we are on the right trail (pun intended), we want you to tell us what you think!

Thanks!
 September is Healthy Aging
& Self Improvement Month
Greetings!

Wow...did we celebrate August with some fascinating American Adventures that resulted in making Happiness Happen...the themes for the month.

We actually started the month of August with the Lovin' the Outdoors Lookout Mountain and Cathedral Caverns adventure coordinated by Black Singles Over 40.  Then there was our great monthly hike at Vickery Creek, and we ended the month in a collaborative weekend with BNN for a Great American Camp Out and Hike at Red Top Mountain, sponsored by REI.

To see the photos from the Red Top Mountain Camp Out and Hike click the photo below.  Tell me what you think of the new format I used...I think it's pretty cool!

During the month we were the featured speaker at the Southern Snow Seekers Ski Club quarterly meeting.  It was a great meeting held at the Cascade Club, and the owner invited the attendees to the club side for the Comedy Show.  It is a great facility.  Check it out for your next event.  They also have dancing every Friday including Steppers, Ballroomers, Hand Dancers & Boppers.

Don't forget to check out our newest partner, Spirit of Sweet Auburn for a list of activities that are going on in Atlanta.  We look forward to future collaborations with the Metro Atlanta Cycling Club and the South Fulton Running Partners whom we met at the Southern Snow Seekers Ski Club meeting... check them out.

FYI...Saturday, September 25th is FREE at all Georgia State Parks.  Also, be mindful that Georgia has 63 State Parks and Historic Sites.  Most charge a flat $5 parking fee.  However, you can enjoy them for free!  Here's how...every Wednesday, the fee is waived.  Also, you can use your library card and 'check out' a park pass, and visit any Georgia State Park...for free.

You should never be without something to do to keep you active physically, mentally and socially while having fun, being fit and enjoying a healthy aging process!

If you join any of the groups or activities we have listed, please let them know how you found out about it...through Hartfield's Hikers and/or OPALs.

Whew!!!  Now to move on to September...my Birthday Month and I think quite appropriately a month to celebrate Healthy Aging, seeing that I will be 62...did I say that...wow...an almost official senior, lovin' every marvelous moment!  I'm an OPAL...a Real Gem! (OPALs - Older People with Active Lifestyles)!

Don't forget Grandparent's Day on Sunday, September 12.  Remember yours or someone else's grandparent, the cornerstones of the family!  Check out a couple of poems for grandparents...one written by me.  Note, the planned Grandparents Expo has been cancelled...until next year.

And, in our continued celebration of September, with it also being 'Self Improvement' month, I encourage you to plan to do something for yourself as you...Live well, Love much, and Laugh often!

FYI...Will Downing will have a Release Party for his new CD entitled 'Lust, Love & Lies' on September 14 at 8:00p at the Loews Atlanta Hotel.
Happy, Healthy Hiking...
Carolyn

September Hike
Panther Creek Falls

 Panther Creek
Saturday, September 4

Rated: Moderate to Difficult
Distance: 7.0 miles
8:00 a.m. Sharp Departure
(Approx. 1.5 hour drive)

Meet at the Hong Kong Market
5495 Jimmy Carter Blvd.
Norcross, GA 30093

The trail follows a beautiful tumbling, cascading stream through a steep-sided valley with rocky cliffs to the dramatic and impressive Panther Creek Falls. It leads down to the pool for a grand view of the falling water and the large pool catching it, and continues through some especially grand hardwood stands. The USDA Forest Service has designated parts of this area as a Protected Botanical Area.

As always, wear comfortable  shoes and clothing.  Bring plenty of water, snacks and your lunch.

----PLEASE MAKE NOTE, WE WILL LEAVE FOR THE HIKE AT 8:00 a.m.----

Due to the overwhelming responses we have been getting for the hikes, we have to start limiting the number of hikers to ensure we help preserve the trails.  It is imperative that you RSVP and show up.  We will implement a waiting list.  So if you can't make it, let us know so someone else can join us. Thanks!

Hike Leader Carolyn at 678.231.4973.

Good Hiking & Health Tips

Hiking
Hot Weather Hikes - Stay well hydrated. Drink lots of water. Drink at least every 10 or 15 minutes.

Wear clothes made of light fabric and light colors to effectively shade you from the sun.

Slow down, rest more, stop if tired. Don't push yourself on real hot days.

Health
Nutritious Eating - Farmers' markets are great sources of fresh local produce. A just-picked tomato from a local farm tastes better than a tomato that's traveled thousands of miles before reaching a supermarket shelf.

The absolute best time to buy an organic fruit or vegetable is at the peak of its growing season.

Normally, we hike the first Saturday of every month unless posted otherwise. Our hikers are all ages, from youth to seniors.

We simply ask you to make note of the length of the hike and the level of difficulty rating.  We are as fast as the slowest person...no need to feel pressured.  We enjoy nature and the company of each other as we hike the trails.

Both Carolyn and Paulette, who is the Sweep (the person in the back to ensure no one is left behind) are 'Certified' Outings Leaders with the Sierra Club.  They hike as a team to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the hikers are assured.

Carolyn is available for speaking engagements on practical ways to improve your current state of health and wellbeing.  Her profession is Integrated Marketing Specialist.

Tune in to her weekly radio show 'OPALs' (Older People with Active Lifestyles) every Wednesday morning at 6:00 a.m. on BlogTalkRadio.com/opals
