We Are A Nut-Free School

Please don't send any meshuganahs to SAR.

While this policy might cause some minor inconvenience to parents, we must cooperate in creating a safe learning

environment for all students.

NYSAIS PRELIMINARY RESULTS!

The NYSAIS committee was most impressed with our school and with how technologically advanced our students are.

The children's most common answers to the evaluating committee's questions were:

idk
b4n
btw
lol
gtg
brb
ttyl

No doubt, we are well on our way to receiving accreditation.

I believe it has been said that behind every great man is a great woman telling him what to wear to work!

We hope you will enjoy this special Purim edition of the Chadashot.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we read the Megilla and join together for this wonderful chag. Purim Sameach.

                      *All Mixed UP*

                                          ~Rabbi Eliezer Gevirtz

"Topsy Turvey Day" has been one of SAR's most illustrious traditions for decades now. Some years ago, an administrative attempt to change the nature of the day caused great protests, and prompted some students to threaten that if this move wasn't canceled, they would no longer study (which in turn prompted some teachers to ask, "So what else is new?"). Yet, is this day just a made-up SAR tradition, like Double Diamond Day or teachers' cars blocking the driveway? Or is there an actual halachic basis for it?

In fact, there is. The Megillah itself, describing the outcome of the Purim story, says that it resulted in the month being "ne'hepach"--things were turned upside down.Haman's plot to destroy the Jews resulted in his own destruction, and he and his sons were hung on the very gallows he had built to throttle Mordechai. What had threatened to be a tragedy for the Jews turned overnight into a triumph, providing us with a prime example of a "Neis Nistar" (a miracle in which Hashem's direct involvement remained hidden). This has resulted in several Purim customs, such as the wearing of costumes (to indicate how the Jews' salvation was initially disguised) and drinking to the extent that one mixes up "cursing Haman" and "blessing Mordechai." Therefore, Topsy Turvey Day is certainly in the spirit of Purim.

As to why Topsy Turvey Day occurs before Purim rather than on Purim day is perhaps another example of things being topsy turvey at SAR, and may be associated with our open school being a "Neis Niglah" (an OPEN miracle)!

*7th Grade Boys' Basketball

 Takes Championship!*

 bbal

Congratulations to the 7th grade basketball team on winning the league championship with their nail-biting come from behind victory against Moriah. These two teams were pretty evenly matched with each team having won on their own court during the regular season. SAR started off quickly behind the outside shooting of Eitan Hain, rebounding of Jeremy Berman and the inside scoring of Rafi Kubersky. Moriah though kept the game close and only trailed by two at half-time. In the third quarter, Moriah started to gain momentum and answered every SAR basket with their long range outside shots from all over the court. SAR had some big steals by Gavi Smith and tenacious defense by Evan Sterman and Nadav Mor but still trailed by 5 with two minutes to play. SAR went to a full court man-to-man defense and brought it down to 2 with a driving lay-up by Ariel Smith who had another outstanding all around game. Down 3 with seconds to go, Ariel found Ben Winter down low for a huge lay-up to bring SAR within 1 point. After two missed free throws by Moriah, Ariel was fouled with 2 seconds left. Ariel calmly made both free throws for the victory and sending the Sting and all their fans into pandemonium. The team worked really hard throughout the whole season. Each game there were different players stepping up and making big plays.  Besides the players mentioned above, major contributions were made all season long by Daniel Shenwick, Daniel Lubofsky, Nathan Herszaft, Avi Siegal, Danny Gurin and Matthew Heisler.  Thank you to all the parents, siblings and fans who supported the team all year.  Go Sting!!

                                  *6th Grade Boys Basketball Team*

6th grade boys basketball team finished the season with an 8-2 record, 2nd in the league, having been the only team to have beaten 1st placed Flatbush during the regular season. In the semi-finals they won Mogen David in a great display of earnest basketball earning a spot in the championship game. Mazal tov!!

Stay posted for when their championship game will be held.
