A Message from Rabbi Krauss | |
Dear Parents,
Welcome back from what I hope was a restful and enjoyable vacation for you and your children. We are continuing our "Good Choices" programming and focusing on the Adar I & II sub-theme: "Stand Up For What's Right And Shine".
I hope that this coming Motzaei Shabbat as many second grade parents as possible are able to attend "Shabbat Sparks," led by Morah Sarah Richter, given in honor of our second graders having reached the wonderful milestone of receiving their own chumashim.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Binyamin Krauss

*Stand Up For What Is Right
And Shine*
Prominently displayed outside the Teachers' Room is a "Stand Up For What Is Right And Shine" mural.

It reminds us to:
Stand up to put-downs,
Help those who are being bullied,
Inform adults when I need to,
Never use my computer or cell phone to hurt others,
Encourage my friends to stand up against bullying too.
I will do my best to stand strong, speak out, and be a good friend, I will let my inner star SHINE!
*Kids And Yiddish*

On Wednesday this week, SAR's Jewish cultural roots ran a little bit deeper. The second, third, fourth, and fifth graders were joined by parents and grandparents for a Kids & Yiddish performance by the National Yiddish Theatre - Folksbiene. This "super family musical" is performed by kids and adults combining Jewish folk traditions with pop culture and a rich melange of musical styles. I'm sure you've heard of "Dancing with the Stars," "Project Runway," and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" But have you heard of "Tants Mit The Stars" or "Nu, Who wants to be a Millionchik?" What about the Yeatles? Students were invited to a birthday party and learned how to say "welcome" and "happy birthday" in Yiddish. They learned many other simple vocabulary words through song like the letters of the alphabet, numbers up to ten, the parts of the body, and the four seasons. "Nu, Who wants to be a Millionchik?" tested some of those words by asking the audience to answer the questions. Some had to use a lifeline, but they got all the right answers in the end! The colorful costumes, masks, and props added to the energized atmosphere of the assembly that had students sitting down, standing up, calling out Yiddish words and phrases, and clapping along.
*Professional Development*

*The Dinosaur Museum*
How do we even know dinosaurs existed? Kindergartners learned about the work of archeologists and that the fossils they have found prove the existence of dinosaurs. The children have also played dinosaur games on the computer, read about dinosaurs, and learned to distinguish among them. The kindergartners' research informed them that some dinosaurs were carnivores, some herbivores, that some walked on two feet, some on four, some had the brains the size of peas, and some had plates on their backs that absorb heat. The children designed the prehistoric creatures out of a variety of art materials, used a Venn diagram to consider what people and dinosaurs have in common, and they played Dinosaur Bingo as a way to learn their names.
When Dinosaurs Rock, a fossil adventure exhibit, brought their museum to SAR, our students were well prepared. They were astounded though, to see life-size replicas of dinosaurs and were in awe when helping the presenter build a dinosaur leg, to find that it reached the Big Building's Multi-Purpose Room's ceiling! After Dinosaurs Rock's amazing presentation including showing a myriad of museum-quality dinosaur fossils and other prehistoric related items that the children were able to see up close and even touch, they then had the opportunity to go on a fossil dig and to pan for gems and minerals.
This wonderful and fascinating experience was generously and anonymously donated to the kindergartners by an SAR grandparent. |

דבר תורה |
By: Buddy Wise
Grade: 8
In this week's sedra, Parshat Vayakel, Moshe talks to Bnei Yisroel about various mitzvot. It seems that Moshe's purpose for the assembly was to discuss the building of the Mishkan and lay out many of the details related to it. So then why in the second pasuk, does the Torah mention the laws of Shabbos? "Six days work may be done and the seventh day shall be holy for you, a Shabbat, a day of complete rest for God; whoever does work (melacha) on that day shall be put to death. You shall kindle no fire in any of your dwellings on the Shabbat day." ( 35:2) This pasuk is clearly out of place.
Since, both here and in Sefer Vayikrathe laws of Mishkan and Shabbos appear together, the Rabbis derive important halachot from this link. Our 39 melachot of Shabbos are based upon this very connection; any work that was done in the Mishkan cannot be done on Shabbos.
While this technical connection is of obvious importance I think there is an even deeper message that links the two: In order to build a place for G-d to rest and dwell in we must first recognize and give testimony to His omniscience by resting from all creativity on the seventh day.
We can learn then from this association of Mishkan and Shabbos, that while we must always try to advance our relationship with G-d, we must first make sure that our bond with Him is based on the fundamental truth and service of Him.
Shabbat Shalom
