Please share your news with us--email alumni@saracademy.org

Dear Alumni,

It has been an exciting semester at SAR Academy, SAR High School, and for the SAR Alumni Association. There is a newly constructed wing of the High School building that opened this fall, a supremely successful Chesed week that set the tone for this semester at the Academy, and our launching of an SAR Alumni Facebook Fan Page that has reconnected hundreds of SAR Alumni with one another and with the school.

Please keep sending us news and updates.  We had so many responses to our request for Class Notes, and you can read below about what your former classmates are up to. Please email whether to arrange a visit, or learn how you can get involved.

Help other former SAR students receive this mailing by forwarding it to them and giving us their contact information. Please send us email addresses for relatives and friends who attended SAR.

Thank you for continuing to take an interest in all that we are doing. We look forward to seeing you back here at SAR, and to hearing from you.

With warm regards,
Rabbi Binyamin Krauss (SAR Academy '84)           Rabbi Tully Harcsztark
Principal, SAR Academy                                        Principal, SAR High School
New High School Wing
New SAR High School Wing
With Suspended Walkway

This September, students at SAR High School returned to a wonderful new wing of the building featuring a tefilah room, six classrooms, a seminar room, a faculty work room, and a conference room.

Aside from the speed with which the project was completed, the most impressive feat is a glass-enclosed bridge that allows students to access the new area from the 4th floor of the building.

To schedule a tour of the new wing, please call Aaron Steinberg in the office: (718) 548-1717 x1230

Looking for Work?
Be visible and the leads will come to you!
By: Lavie Margolin (AC'94)

It can be an exhausting, but necessary, process to search out several hundred job opportunities through networking, job boards, company websites and newspapers, when only a handful will lead to actual job offers. What if there was a way to have those of influence seek you out and make offers to you? If you are visible, then this becomes a more likely scenario. What do I mean by visibility? Well first, let me explain what I do not mean. I do not mean just posting your resume on a big job board and hoping for the best. In most cases, this will lead to a large increase in your spam box and not yield many favorable opportunities.

Creating a Linkedin.com profile is getting a bit warmer. Go beyond just signing up for the site.  Thoughtfully list your areas of expertise, relevant skills and experience, and obtain several appropriate recommendations.  When properly utilized, your Linkedin.com profile may be found by an employer looking to hire or a recruiter seeking to fill a job opportunity.

Warmer still? Become known as an expert in your field to maximize your visibility. There are several ways to do this:
  • Write a blog to demonstrate your expertise in your field of interest.
  • Write an article for a scholarly journal or trade publication in your field.
  • Research what conferences would benefit from your knowledge and send a proposal to give a talk.

When you are acknowledged as an expert, others will seek you out. There may be opportunities for full time or part time employment, or work on a consulting basis.

    SAR Online Auction
For the second year in a row, our Online Goods and Services Auction was an enormous success and addition to our Scholarship Fund. The needs have been great this year, and SAR has budgeted millions of dollars for tuition assistance. This is a tremendous amount, and every gift counts. Our auction, co-chaired by Deena Berger (AC '87)Elana Minkoveand Dana Teplitsky (AC '90), was quite a success and raised over $90,000. To see the items that were available click here. Our 42nd Anniversary Dinner is right around the corner, and we hope to see you there!

Thank You Message from US Soldiers following Chesed Week Activity
SAR Academy students prepared care packages for US Soldiers.

SAR Academy Chesed Week 2010 took place this year from October 18-22, and provided an opportunity for every student in the building to perform an act of Chesed. Among other activities, students made sandwiches for the hungry, prepared "cozy cups" for Seniors, and sent Mazal Tov packages to young couples in Israel who need help furnishing their homes.

Fifth Grade students prepared packages of Military socks and candy for US Soldiers currently deployed in Afghanistan and around the world. They included messages such as "Thank you so much for protecting the USA! I'm glad we have people like you protecting us" and "I am in awe of how brave you are to accept this pledge. I hope you stay safe and realize how much everyone respects you."

Two months later the students received some messages back from the soldiers including the following letter:
US Soldiers with Care Packages 2
    Dear Ma'am or Sir,
I just wanted to drop you all a line to let you know that today my unit received a generous care package from your organization. While our Marines have already begun to enjoy the treats of the care package, I couldn't help but think how awesome it was that people so many thousands of miles away, whom non of us have ever met, would be so generous to send us such a substantial package. I just wanted to take a few minutes to express the gratitude on behalf of my Marines and myself. Thank you.
    Very Respectfully,
    Lance Corporal Lisa W.
    C-2 Operations Non Commissioned Officer
    1 Marine Expeditionary Force
    Helmand Province, Afghanistan

    A true act of chesed!

Help us Honor Rabbi Jonathan Kroll!
    Special SAR HS Alumni Campaign

Jon Kroll ProfileAs you may have heard, we will be honoring our very own Rabbi Jonathan Kroll with the Audrey Schurgin Memorial Faculty Award at SAR's 42nd Anniversary Dinner this February.

Whether you were in one of the classes he taught, participated in student activities that Rabbi Kroll oversaw, or simply enjoyed the many shabbatonim he has coordinated for so many years, we can all take a few moments to stop and say thank you and Mazal Tov to Rabbi Kroll who has impacted so many of us.

In honor of this occasion, there will be a page in the Dinner Journal from SAR High School alumni wishing to express Hakarat HaTov and a Yashar Koach to Rabbi Kroll.

Please join us in this special opportunity for alumni of SAR High School by clicking on the link below. We are asking each of our alumni to make a gift of $18 or more to the SAR Scholarship Fund - facilitating a reconnection with Rabbi Kroll. We are proud to announce a 100% match on all new donations to the Journal Dinner up to a cumulative total of $100,000.

We are proud to be honoring some amazing people at this year's dinner:

Giti and Jack Bendheim will be the Guests of Honor, having served the SAR Community for more than 30 years, remaining involved respectively on our Board of Education and as President of the Board of Trustees. As theyparticipated in the growth of SAR into a crown jewel of the New York modern orthodox community, they also sent their children to SAR: Yonina ('84) and Zev, Dani ('85) and Shifra, Shuli ('88) and Avi, Yonatan ('90) and Esther, Tamar ('95) and Reuven, Etan ('98) and Sarah, and Gilad ('02). They are a family who truly exemplify the spirit and vitality of SAR in every way.

Benay Meisels is the Michael Schreck Memorial Community Service Award recipient. Ever since her children began at SAR, Benay could be counted on to assume a leadership role. Most remarkably, she served as Co-President of the Parent Teacher Council for four years from Fall 2005 to Spring 2009. Benay and her husband Dr. Ira Meisels are the proud parents of Samantha (11th) and Alexandra (7th).

Rabbi Jonathan Kroll, recipient of the Audrey Schurgin Memorial Faculty Award, is Associate Principal of SAR High School. A founding teacher at SAR High School, Rabbi Kroll has coordinated student activities, been the beloved mentor to hundreds of SAR students, and helped define and shape every part of SAR's program. Rabbi Kroll and his wife Jennifer are the parents of four children, Leora (6th), Avi (4th), Akiva (2nd), and Elie.
