Thank you very much to Stephanie and Shachar Minkove for hosting the 2nd grade Meet and Greet this past Saturday night.
Parents enjoyed wonderful food and company and had a nice time catching up with friends and meeting new 2nd grade parents.

The Tefila Minute

Ashrei, perek 145 of Tehillim was written by David haMelech. The six perakim of Tehillim beginning with Ashrei are the essence of pesukei d'zimra.

Why is אשרי so beloved, the paragraph that we sing and know by heart?

One thing that makes it so easy to remember is that it is organized by the א"ב. The Avudraham explains that the Alef Bet structure symbolizes that we praise Hashem with every sound available to us.

The second is that we say it three times a day. To emphasize the importance of אשרי, the Gemara writes that a person who says אשרי three times a day will surely merit the World to Come.[1]

What ideas are contained in אשרי that make it such a powerful prayer?

The Gemara points to the combination of two factors: the pasuk, פותח את ידך ומשביע לכל חי רצון, and the presence of the א"ב. When we say פותח את ידך we acknowledge that Hashem provides all creatures of the world with their needs; literally, He opens up His hand to satisfy every living creature (חי). The bottom line is that Hashem is directly involved with providing for our needs, our family's פרנסה, etc.

Halacha

The פסוק of פותח את ידך is so significant that a person has to say it again if he/she does not focus on the meaning of the words.[2]

During the pasuk, you may see people opening up their hands to mimic the action of פותח את ידך.

אשרי and the הללוקה's represent the last six perakim of ספר תהילים - פרקים קמה-קנ.

These perakim were chosen purposefully as a daily, symbolic finishing of ספר תהלים in praise of Hashem. The word הללוקה may have served a specific purpose when there were no siddurim. Now it directs us to praise Hashem.

[1] ברכות ד:. Some texts leave out the number three.

[2] Some say that a person can focus when he/she says the pasuk at the end of davening during the second אשרי.

 Rabbi Krauss
Dear Parents,

כל הכבוד and תודה רבה to our wonderful faculty for leading every aspect of the sixth grade Yachad Shabbaton and making it an exceptional experience for our students.
From the outstanding programming, to the רוח throughout, our sixth graders had an amazing Shabbat.

Mazal tov to our fourth graders on creating a spectacular Navi Play and thank you to the fourth grade team for their preparation of our students in reaching this milestone in their Torah learning.

I hope the Bring It To The Table handouts (which are also printable below) related to Good Choices: In Deeds and In Voices, are facilitating conversation at your Shabbat table. They have been meaningful for my family.

         *The Power of Words*

After studying the work of Stuart Davis, the 4th graders created collages. They emphasized the power of words by incorporating words and phrases into their artwork.

           mc

Stuart Davis (1894-1964), our students learned in Morah Chani's art class, grew up in an artistic environment; his father was art director of a Philadelphia newspaper and his mother was a sculptor. Davis is considered to be an outstanding American artist who worked in a Cubist style. You can recognize Stuart Davis' art work by the pure abstract patterns he used. He often included lettering and suggestions of advertisements and posters in his artwork as well. The passion and enthusiasm of Stuart Davis' works also reflect his interest in jazz.

Davis experimented with the collage technique invented by Braque and Picasso. He pasted paper on the surface of his canvases and painted imitations of wallpapers, labels, etc. In these collages he first introduced words and letters, elements that were an important part of his work.

Look carefully at our students' artwork on display in the atrium and try to find the following slogans incorporated into their work: "Speak Like a Mench." "Do the Right Thing." "Smile." "Try Your Best." and "Give and Get Respect."

As part of the third grade curriculum, students have been thinking about what they say to each other, and how they say it. In Educational Technology Class, students worked in

               mc

groups to brainstorm the kinds of positive phrases that they would like to hear, and typed them into Microsoft Word. They then copied those words into an online tool called Tagxedo (http://www.tagxedo.com/) and played with various formatting settings to create word clouds that highlight the positive words we should be saying to each other.

For example, students made text montages with words and phrases like: Yes; Excuse me; Nice shirt; You're welcome; Have a good afternoon; Shalom; Great idea; I'm sorry, and many, many more. How many of these words can you say today?

                          *Navi Play*

            mc

Mazal tov to our fourth graders on receiving their very own Neviim this week. In preparation for beginning to study Sefer Yehoshua in class, Kitah Dalet spent time with their morot reviewing the story of B'nei Yisrael from the end of Bereshit through Devarim when Yehoshua takes over as the leader of the people.

To demonstrate their knowledge, the students wrote original skits in Hebrew based on the Torah storylines. Performed in the lunchroom on a stage, in front of a beautifully painted backdrop with biblical scenes depicted on it, their original Navi play was a milestone in the development of their learning Torah. The scenes were modern and funny, and so realistic that an audible sound of surprise filled the room when Moshe broke the luchot. The children were loud and clear, and so proud of the scenes they created. Rabbi Krauss spoke to the grade commending them for their personal attachment to Torah and for how they embraced their studies.

Kol Hakavod, Kitah Dalet. Enjoy learning Sefer Yehoshua!

Thank you very much to the Sopher-Harelick family for donating all of the Neviim for our fourth graders.

      *Rainforest In The Bronx?*

Gr. 3 Bronx Zoo 1
In conjunction with third grades' Rainforest Unit, they took a trip to the Bronx Zoo to explore "Tropic Zone: The Rainforest. From v
viewing platforms set at various levels, our students looked up and looked down to discover animal life in all layers of the zoo's walk-through rainforest habitat. Tortoises crept underfoot, a two-toed sloth hung from a vine, and hornbills called in the canopy.

Their tour guide, Ron, lived in the rain forest for five years. He told the third graders that for thirty-six straight days it was pouring rain non-stop. He taught them that most snakes are gentle and Madagascar Hissing Cockraoches are actually very clean. "Ayalet Aranoff said, "I enjoyed learning about the rain forest and how the different layers have cool creatures in them.

Soon, third graders will be designing a rainforest of their own using recycled materials.

It's That "KIND" Of Week

As a result of our important work during Chesed Week, SAR received these thank you notes in response:

Dear Mrs. Wolfer-Nerenberg, and Children and Faculty of SAR Academy,

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the package of "Socks & Sweets" you so kindly sent me. It was incredibly thoughtful and very well received. I myself am not a soldier (I am a Dept. of the Army Civilian serving on a Human Terrain Team) but I took great pleasure in handing out every single bag of goodies to the U.S. soldiers I work with. I thank you for that opportunity. (OK, I may have lifted a Reese's or two).

Being so far from home, in an environment such as this, every little bit of support from home is highly appreciated. The soldiers enjoyed the candy and the lovely messages which the kids took the time to write. I have attached a few pictures. I will also send a few more pictures that I took during a mission today as soon as I load them on my computer.

I'm very happy to see a Jewish day school showing its support for our troops. It means a great deal. I hope to see more such efforts from our community as a whole. I'll be here until May, at least, and I'll always be more than happy to keep handing out anything that is sent.

Please convey our appreciation to the children.

All the best and Happy Hanukka,

Daniel Z.

its that kind

Dear Ma'am or Sir,

I just wanted to drop you all a line to let you know that today my unit received a generous care package from your organization. While our Marines have already begun to enjoy the treats of the care package, I couldn't help but think about how awesome it was that people so many thousands of miles away, whom none of us have ever met, would be so generous to send us such a substantial package. I just wanted to take a few minutes to express the gratitude on behalf of my Marines and myself. Thank you.

Very Respectfully,

Lance Corporal Lisa W.

I want to thank all of the students, at SAR Academy, for the many bags of candy and army socks for us, here in Kosovo, at the army hospital. We all work here in a variety of jobs. It was very kind of all of you to think of us. We enjoyed reading your notes. I am a dentist so everyone has to brush after they eat the candy. We are very proud to be the recipient of gifts in Major Wolfer's name. He must have been a very brave soldier.

Sincerely,

Spoken From The Heart: Trop

                                              *Taamay HaMikra*

Spoken from the Heart       spoken from the heart

To enhance the Chumash curriculum and reading skills, the students will be learning Taamay HaMikra (Torah Cantillation/trop) once a week taught by Rabbi Krauss and Morah Dina Najman. Knowing how to chant the words of the text greatly enhances the students' ability to read the psukim with accuracy and comprehension. Setting the words to the trop helps students retain the words as well as their meaning, as children pick up songs quickly and remember them longer than prose.

We are excited to expose the students to this beautiful part of our mesorah in the context of the psukim they learn in class this year.

                        *Seventh Grade Yachad Shabbaton*

The seventh grade Yachad Shabbaton last weekend in New Rochelle was full of good Shabbat food, ruach, and the celebration of making new friends. SAR students and Yachad students stayed over in host families' homes and enjoyed activities, meals, and tefilah at the Young Israel of New Rochelle. Many eighth grade students volunteered at the Shabbaton as waiters and waitresses. Friday night, the students played getting to know you games, and after dinner honored Shabbat with spirited dancing. Rabbi Krauss gave a D'var Torah on the importance of family, community, and togetherness through the lens of Yosef and his brothers. Shabbat morning after Shacharit, the guests learned parsha together through games, and enjoyed more ruach and dancing accompanied by music after havdalah. Throughout the Shabbaton, Yachad advisors and SAR teachers taught songs, led the students in games, and performed skits for the student participants.

PARSHAT VAYECHI  by Gan Gimel
(The last parsha in the book of Bereishit)

The following children volunteered to brainstorm what they remembered about the parsha. Their initials appear after the ideas they contributed:

Alexandra Nadritch (A.N.); Ari Fenster (A.F.); Avery Haller (A.H.); Bernard Silver (B.S.); Choni Bellino (C.B.); Elish Eisenberg (E.E.); Eytan Krausz (E.K.); Hannah Rose (H.R.); Ikey Levey (I.L.); Izzy Ingber (I.I.); Lyla Tesler (L.T.); Perri Sterman (P.S.).

Then the entire class helped put their ideas in the right order.

Bnei Yisrael are living in Eretz Mitzrayim (Egypt) (EK). They live in the land of Goshen (EE), near the Nile River, so their sheep can get more water and stuff to eat-grass (PS).

Yaakov got sick (HR). He sent a messenger to Yosef to come quickly (I I). Yosef right away took his two kids to his father (AH). Yaakov wanted to give them a blessing, and he was supposed to give Menashe the bracha with his right hand (because he was older) and Efrayim with his left (AF), but Yaakov switched his hands (AF). Yosef thought he was doing it by accident because he couldn't see so well (PS), but that was what he had to do (I I). He sang them a song (AF) - "Hamalach Hagoel Oti". It said "the mal'ach (angel) that took care of (me) in Egypt (AH) will take care of (these) children too (AN); he will bless these young boys (ne'arim), and I hope they will always be called 'my children', and be like the fathers (AF) - Avraham and Yitzchak (AN); and they will get lots of children like the fish in the sea and overflow onto the land"(EE).

Then Yaakov gave a bracha to all his other sons (AN). Each one got the bracha that they needed. Yaakov made Yosef promise that he would bury him back in Eretz Kna'an (BS) in Ma'arat Hamachpeilah (EE) with Avraham and Sarah, Yitzchak and Rivkah, and Leah. Yaakov died (CB), and Yosef did what he promised.

Yosef was still in charge of Egypt (CB) for 54 more years. His brothers were worried that he was still angry with them, and they apologized to him again. He was a tzadik, and told them not to be worried because it was Hashem's plan! When he was older, Yosef (AF) made the Jews promise to build a metal (BS) coffin (AF) by the Nile river (EE) till all the Jews would leave Egypt, and then to take him back to be buried in Eretz Kna'an too (LT).

We usually sit quietly in shul, but when we finish one of the five books of the Torah, like after this parsha, everyone stands up and says loudly -

"CHAZAK, CHAZAK VENITCHAZEK!" (Let's be strong, let's be strong and get stronger!) Of course it does not mean our muscles, it means in learning Torah!

Shabbat Shalom.

This Week In Sports

this week in sports

Our hockey team won 4-2 this past Sunday against JEC. Buddy Wise, Jesse Schanzer, and Ben Elias scored. Alex Kalb played great in goal.

The girls varsity basketball team have started the year off with a bang with three strong performances against BDS, Flatbush and Brandeis.  The Lady Sting have been led by the play-making and assists of Dahlia Fischer,  the offensive scoring of Emily David, Rebecca Kann, and Yona Zierler Feit and the defensive pressure of Talia Kupferman, Rose Frankel and Danielle Harris.

The 6th grade boys team came up with their first victory on Monday night at Westchester Day School. After a thrilling finish, SAR improved to 1-1 on the season. SAR came out strong lead by Yair Slasky on the defensive end. Spencer Tropper gave them a boost off the bench with some helpful outside shooting. After only having a small lead at halftime, SAR came out firing in the third quarter. The team had a large lead early in the fourth quarter when WDS staged a large comback, but SAR was able to close out the game with some nifty ball handling and held on to win their first game of the 2010-2011 season. Erez Major gave the Sting a huge boost on the defensive and rebounding end
and Amichai zierler Feit on the offensive side. The Sting showed much improvement, as well as potential for their next game versus YCQ at home on December 22nd.

From Thursday through Sunday, the David Cooper Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament hosted girls high school basketball teams from Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, and our own High School Sting team. The athletes stayed in Riverdale starting on Wednesday night and played games on Thursday, Friday, Saturday night, and Sunday. Sting did an incredible job throughout the tournament. They played in the final game against Chicago and were tied at 27 in the last three seconds of the game when Chicago scored to take first place. What an exciting way to end it!
