A Message from Rabbi Krauss
 new bini photo
Dear Parents,

It was wonderful to walk down Fifth Avenue with your children this past Sunday at the Salute to Israel Parade. We were inspired by the artwork coordinated by Chani Jaskoll, the ruach of David Winter, and the input of our banot: Hadar Granitza, Shira Shterental, Avia Dahan, Avital Wachtel, Tamar Elitzur, Yael Citroen. Thank you to all who helped organize the march.

Thank you to Beverly Nerenberg and her family for spearheading our annual Memorial Day ceremony at which we will pause to remember Major Stuart Wolfer, z"l, Beverly's beloved brother was killed in the line of duty in Iraq two years ago. It would be wonderful if you and your families could find ways to remember our fallen soldiers this weekend. Beverly provided the links below to help families commemorate those that never returned home from war while defending our freedoms. Click here and here for the links.

As we begin the month of June, our teachers are working hard to make sure that productive learning continues through noon on June 22nd. Please help us encourage your children to "keep the flame burning" for the final stretch.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Binyamin Krauss

SiyumSiyum
Rain is a blessing. So is learning Torah. As first through eighth graders walked to Seton Park on Friday, May 14th for our Siyum HaTorah celebration it rained off and on, but our spirits and our MiDor L'Dor sunny yellow t-shirts brightened the grey day. ELC children arriving in buses awaited the arrival of the rest of the school. "We are here today to celebrate," Rabbi Krauss said as students gathered under make-shift tents to protect them from the rain. "We finished learning Chamisha Chumshei Torah. Together with parents and grandparents, either in person, or on the phone, or on skype, we have learned all 187 perakim of the Torah." After the Siyum HaTorah and Divrei Torah with special recognition of the participants in the M'Dor L'Dor Learn-A-Thon, the sun broke and there was joyous singing and dancing in celebration. Kol Hakavod SAR!

               Math  Fair*

Intergenerational Math Day

"Welcome to the first ever 'First Grade Intergenerational Math Fair'," Rabbi Krauss said in welcoming the robust crowd of proud parents and grandparents and special guests of our first graders. "It is very special that right now we are reading from Sefer BaMidbar, the book whose English name is 'Numbers'. Do you know why numbers are so special? Because," Rabbi Krauss said, "we count what we love."

The children presented SAR's MiDor L'Dor theme song, and an adorable math tune with the chorus: "When I run out of fingers, I'll count up my toes. Start with 10. Count some more. That's how it goes."

"Elizabeth Barrett Browning said it well when she wrote. 'How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.'" said Morah Sharon Marson when explaining to the visitors that the morning ahead was filled with sharing math activities with people they love.

               math fair

The classes then made their way down from the lunchroom to the first grade area where each child rotated through math workshops and demonstrated math game play that they have mastered over math fair1the year. Some of the math games played by first graders and their guests included: Count Across, 2-Sum Dice Game, Pico Phony Zilch, Shut The Box and Addition Bingo (both played in Hebrew!), Secret Number, Odd-Even Tic-Tac-Toe, 20/20, X-Ray Vision, Set, Geo Boards, and an original designed by students in Morah Sharon's math groups called, "Racing The Stairs". There are sixty-four stairs from the bottom of the big building to the top. Who can get there first? Using a specialized deck of cards with first graders photographed faces, the students turned over two cards, formed a subtraction equation with the values on the cards, and moved forward the difference. One wild card sends one player back a number of stairs, and another sports the image of Rabbi Krauss with the instructions: 'The principal says you are an awesome math student. Take another turn.'

math fair2When the workshop rotations concluded, students met in their class areas with their teachers to receive math gift bags containing many of the math games experienced that morning, giving each family opportunities to play our math games at home, across the generations. It was a rich and wonderful morning and the first graders are still playing. Come by to learn a math game from a first grader!

    *The Little Prince

The Little Prince

After months of rehearsal, the 5th and 6th grade Drama Club presented their Spring Musical, The Little Prince to fellow students, family, and friends on Friday, May 14th during school, and Sunday, May 16th and Monday May 17th in the evening. From the moment the curtain opened to reveal a plane made out of people, to the sunsets streaking across the sky made out of colored scarves, to the singing "Well" costumed in blue, the characters pulled the audience into the creative world of the show and challenged them to see the world in a different way while thinking about the messages within the story. Many actors portrayed different characters throughout the play, donning scarves and other accessories to denote the change. The Little Prince

The audience used their imaginations well as anyone overhearing the performance could tell: the Aviator runs all night and most of the next day to catch up to the Little Prince, "and as usual," the Aviator says, "I didn't find him until..." while the Aviator never finishes the sentence, the actors pull out their colored scarves and circle the stage. In the audience, an audible murmur arose "...sunset". They finished the Aviator's sentence.

The Little Prince

The creative process could not have happened without the insights, dedication, and generosity of many talented individuals both at SAR and beyond.

*Eighth Grade Pottery Elective Makes Mezuzot*

potteryThe eighth grade pottery elective, led by Efrat Grossman, mother of second grader Ayala Grossman, designed many things throughout their course of study. For the last project of the year they brainstormed as a group about what they could do for the school. The children decided to make mezuzot. They were very motivated to give back to SAR and make a contribution to the school they love. Once the mezuzot were shaped and painted, Efrat fired the ceramics for the students and now the mezuzot are ready to be hung up in the Academy.

                                      *Wacky Wax Museum*
Wax MuseumWax MuseumWax Museum

Last Monday, May 17th, history came alive as the third graders transformed the gym into a Wacky Wax Museum. They invited their families as well as the second graders to attend. While this museum had free admission, the second graders did receive a colored admit-one ticket to enter. Families received a map of the room as well as a program for the exhibit that explained each character they would find in the museum.

Each of the third graders stood or sat in front of a hand-made poster that offered directions for bringing that character to life. For example, to talk to Dr. Seuss you had to read a page from one of his books-in Hebrew or English. To talk to Georgia O'Keeffe or Albert Einstein, one had to complete her painting or an equation, respectively. Each character spoke about when they were born and a little bit about growing up. They explained what they were famous for and offered one message to give to the world. Abigail Adams believes that women have the same rights as men. Pablo Picasso says to always take risks and try new things.

     Wax MuseumWax Museum

The third graders were fully costumed in period dress, graying hair, uniform, whatever each character required. They stayed in character, waiting until the activity was completed before they began their story. Over the hour exhibit, the third graders were allowed to take breaks a few at a time to visit the other characters around the room. "I loved being in the Wacky Wax Museum." said Adina Hirschfield. She continued, "I was Milton Hershey and I wore a hat and apron. I gave out Hershey's kisses and sat next to Barack Obama. I loved King Tut's costume. It was hard because sometimes I couldn't move. The people who came loved my speech, my costume and my candy. The Wacky Wax Museum was awesome." Oren Neuwirth wrote, "It was an outstanding experience to be in the 2010 Wacky Wax Museum. I was Louis Armstrong. I had suspenders over a yellow button-down shirt. I also wore Shabbat pants. My props were a trumpet and a napkin because I sweat a lot while I was playing the trumpet. Some of the reactions of the visitors were; "I loved Louis Armstrong" or "He was the best!" Someone even asked me if I remembered his nickname and I said 'Satchmo or Pops.'"

Everyone enjoyed, families and students alike, as they eagerly ran around the room trying to guess who everyone was and listening carefully to their stories.

וזה מעשה המנורה מקשה זהב , במדבר פרק ח פסוק ד

"This is the workmanship of the Menorah, hammered-out gold. We learn from this pasuk, how Hashem instructs Moshe to construct the Menorah. Whenever the word זאת or זה is used, it usually implies that something tangible was shown to the listener, just like החדש הזה לכם  where Hashem actually showed Moshe the new moon, which can determine the beginning of the new month and the days within the calendar.

Rashi explains here, Hashem showed a visual model of the Menorah to Moshe because Moshe didn't fully understand how to craft the Menorah the right way. Why was the construction of the Menorah so confusing for Moshe?

The entire Menorah was to be constructed from only one piece of gold. This single piece of gold was hammered-out, to create one of the symbols of Judaism, the beautiful Menorah. This one piece of gold used to sculpt the entire Menorah, represents the Jewish nation. What was troubling to Moshe, was how could he inspire the Jewish nation to behave as one unified entity? HaShem showing Moshe that although it may be a challenging task it can be achieved.

No matter our age, background or gender we are all one. The Menorah exhibits the spiritual light of HaShem. Similarly when we as a Jewish nation behave as a unified nation, we too can radiate the spiritual light of HaShem to the world.
