*Bracha Bee*
Our fourth graders dedicated the month of Sh'vat to mastering many brachot including brachot for various foods and for wonders in the world. Each class had three or four Bracha Bee representatives who went on to the Bracha Bee finals and who then celebrated their accomplishment with a pizza lunch on Friday with Rabbi Krauss.
Mazal Tov to:
4W: Tova Sidlow, Shira Goldscheider, Jonah Stadtmauer
4X: Sammy Sokol, Jeremy Jesselson, Joseph Block
4Y: Yonatan Fine, Yonatan Sturm, Ayelet Kalfus
4Z: Nitzan Solomon, Kayla Kalb, Avi Roth, Nili Raskas
A special Mazal Tov to Yonatan Sturm, the overall winner who won the Bracha Bee by correctly answering which bracha is said for sardines! Ask a fourth grader; they can tell you!
*A Ring For Every Region*
On Friday, March 5, Class 1W was privileged to host a visit from Yael Federbush, Maya Lebowitz's mom. Yael is a producer on the Today Show (NBC) and attended the recent Olympics in Vancouver. She brought large, colorful photographs of the famous athletes that she met there, such as Shaun White, the snowboarder who won a gold medal for the U.S., Apolo Ohno, the speedskater who won numerous medals, and Lindsey Vonn, the downhill skier who also won a few medals. The children were so excited to see these larger than life personalities and were very impressed that Yael had met them.
Both Yael and Maya wore clothing that was from the Olympics. Yael had a jacket and a special armband with the word "Media" on it that she needed to wear at all times. She also showed the children all the special passes and identification that she needed to enter different events and areas. Maya had a special t-shirt from the Olympics. All the clothing had the Olympics rings on it. "Every color of the rings is for every region that goes to the Olympics," Alex Lebowitz learned. Yael shared some of her experiences covering the Olympics, and also showed the children a picture of herself with the Today Show hosts.
Then, she led a great art project with the children. They were able to make the Olympic rings, replicating the exact design, and decorating them with glitter glue. The children loved the presentation and the fun art project. "The Olympics are really cool!" Dani Minkove said.
Thank you to Yael and Maya so much for planning this exciting talk and project.
*5W Israel Chidon*

Every week the students of 5W learn about a different part of Israel. This week's chidon tested everything they've learned so far this year! The class was split into two groups, k'vutza alef and k'vutza bet, and both teams wanted to win. Played on the SMARTBoard, the students took turns answering the questions by coming up to the board. A tally kept track of the score on the whiteboard. The students eagerly raised their hands to answer the questions and rounds of "kol hakavod" were heard after each correct answer. The students enjoyed the Chidon as well as a siyum with food to celebrate and congratulate themselves on all they have learned about Israel so far this year. They'll continue learning about places in Israel each week and will have one more siyum to look forward to at the end of the year. We hope that these trivia and basic knowledge points about Israel will continue to make them proud of their homeland. A big Kol Hakavod to Morah Avia Dahan for creating the chidonim about Israel throughout the year. Enjoy a few selected questions from the Chidon below. Click here for the special Parent Presentation.
"If you don't have Powerpoint on your computer, you can download the free Powerpoint Viewer from Microsoft"
All Chidon questions and answers were in Hebrew, but we've translated them to English here: 1. Which animal is on the symbol of Jerusalem?
A. Dolphin
B. Tiger
C. Lion
D. Bear 2. Who lived in S'deh Boker?
A. Golda Meir
B. Benyamin Netanyahu
C. Shimon Peres
D. David Ben Gurion 3. Can you identify Meron on the map of Israel?

*100 Is New!*
On Thursday, March 5, first grade celebrated the 100th day of school, which they have eagerly been counting toward since the first day in school. Each child proudly brought to class 100 of something: 100 rubberbands, Cheerios, pennies, cotton balls, sevivonim, crayons, and even an array of items totaling 100, all put on display.
The 100 Day event launched with the viewing of a film about the number 100 from Brain Pop, Jr. Some of the activities that followed included: a gym center (making hoola hoops spin 100 times, and doing 100 push-ups,
sit-ups, jump-roping), an art center (organizing 100 pictures of toes on a posterboard), a writing center (making a 100 day book, writing about spending 100 dollars, listing 100 words that can be read), a math center (connecting the dots to 100, adding numbers to get to 100, variations on the 100's chart), and a creative thinking center (brainstorming what the number 100 could be turned into: a traffic light, a fork and two plates, the face of a man who is sweating). The morning ended with a yummy snack of 100 lollipops, which were distributed throughout the grade.

*Brain Awareness Week*
Dr. Hal Blumenfeld, a brain doctor, and ELC parent, visited K2 on Wednesday morning to speak with the students about brain development. He brought models of human brains and real mice, a rat, and monkey brains. The students ate Mike and Ike's candy while holding their noses but couldn't taste the candy until after they let go of their noses because smell and taste are related senses.
"Did you know that the cortex is as long and big as a pizza pan? It would look like this," Dr. Blumenfeld explained by taking two pieces of paper and sticking them on either side of his face. To fit in the small space inside our heads, the cortex has to be crumbled and folded in on itself. Dr. Blumenfeld then held up two plastic bags, each holding a tomato. One held water around the tomato; one did not. Dr. Blumenfeld's son, Lev, helped demonstrate by dropping the bags on the floor. The tomato without water smashed, while the one with water remained intact. Our brains are protected because of the water-like fluid surrounding them. Dr. Blumenfeld left the children with pencils and brain erasers. When he left, the students played chess. One boy took his brain eraser and put it on his king piece. "My king's alive!" he declared. (Now it has a brain!)

*8th Grade Parent-Student Program on Integrity*
On Wednesday night March 3rd, impassioned discussion interspersed with laughter could be heard in the JHS area. Led by Dr. Jane Davidson and Mrs. Debbie Schloss, eighth grade parents and students joined together with SAR faculty and administration for an interactive and engaging program focusing on integrity. Interesting SMART Board lessons containing clips of Dennis Prager's video, "For Goodness Sake", evoked laughter as well as acted as a trigger for serious conversation and debate. Some questions raised were: Is copying homework from a friend ever ok? How about cheating on a test? Are there legitimate reasons to hire an employee off the books?
Other topics explored why we have rules and laws, what is a white lie, and considering our own personal code of ethics. Parents have found that the stimulating and significant conversations started that evening have continued afterwards at home.

*New York Mathematics League Contest*
The New York Mathematics League Contest is the second and last math contest taken annually by our junior high students. The contest consists of 40 multiple choice questions, ranging in difficulty from basic operations with fractions and decimals to difficult and complex problems involving algebra and geometry. The test makers state, "Students who score 15 points should be commended for good work, while few students score as high as 30 points." In fact, many of our students achieved at least a score of 15, while quite a few scored 30 and above. (In one class, fully half of the students scored 30 or above.)
Special mention should be made of an eighth grader who received an amazing score of 40, marking the first time in SAR history when one of our students achieved a perfect score on one of these competitions. We congratulate all of the students who did well, and give recognition to the following top scorers in each class.
Seventh Grade:

Grade: 8
Parashas Vayakhel-Pekudei
Let me start off by saying that this week's parasha is both an architect's dream and a rabbi's nightmare. Therefore, it took me a long time to find something memorable. The parasha starts off by Moshe assembling the Jewish people and explaining the laws of Shabbos. Immediately afterwards, Moshe commands the children of Israel to give donations in order to build the Mishkan. Then, the rest of the parasha goes on about the architecture. The Gemara asks a question on this matter: What is Shabbos doing here when we are talking about the Mishkan? The Gemara answers: The Torah is teaching us that building the Mishkan, a shul, or even the third Beit Hamikdash I"YH is forbidden on Shabbos despite that it is for Hashem. When the Young Israel of New Rochelle's new building was being built, I remember that Rabbi Reuven Fink instructed the workers not to do construction on Saturdays for this particular reason. The Gemara adds: The Mishkan, the Beit Hamikdash, and a shul are not only meant for Hashem. For it is written in Parashas Terumah: "They shall build me a Mikdash, and I will dwell among them." We learn from this passuk, that Hashem didn't need the Mishkan; but it for was us. The Jewish people need it to serve Hashem. The lesson for us is to remember that to honor and keep Shabbos is for ALL TIMES. The Beit Hamikdash is not a constant like Shabbos. We may not always have the Beit Hamikdash; but every week, Shabbos is there for us, just as we are there for Shabbos. Therefore, Shabbos overrides the building of the Beit Hamikdash. In our days, with God's help, may it be that we live to see the third Beit Hamikdash built, just as Bnei Yisrael saw the Mishkan built in this week's parasha.
Good Shabbos, David Aaronson
