    *What the Chadashot Really
          Means, Vol. 2*
                                   by Rabbi Eliezer Gevirtz

r. gevirtzSeveral Purims ago, the Purim Chadashot brought to readers' attention the story behind the story at SAR. Much has happened since, so we now bring you the latest updates
on what the news you read is really saying.

                                         *
"The SAR basketball team easily proved victorious by
totally crushing and demolishing their helpless opponents,
to the surprise of no one."

(They were playing the New York Knicks.)

*
"Make sure to check your email to see if school will be
closed due to snow."

(Fat chance of that happening. The only really big
snowstorm this year took place while we were already off
for vacation: a total waste of white stuff.)

 *

"The Teachers' In-Service day proved to be very worthwhile
and helpful for teacher development."

(The teachers had to come on time, sit quietly, listen
attentively, and then write a report afterwards, allowing them to finally appreciate the toil and trouble their students go through every day.)

 *

"The "Bring-Your-Own-Lunch program on Fridays, in which bagels are made available to students who don't bring lunches from home, has proven to be very successful and financially helpful to the school."

(The school was able to sell the leftover bagels to the NY City Council for $177 each.)

*

"The 5th Graders' New York City exhibit was once again
amazing, truly reflecting the state of landmarks in the city."

(After seeing the exhibit, Mayor Bloomberg announced that the city will now build 3 additional Empire State Buildings, 7 more Statues of Liberty, and 18 new Guggenheim Museums, to be in accord with SAR's version.)

*

"The special program last night examining aspects of the computer and other electronics-based devices proved very educational to students and adults alike."

(The time was spent with students explaining to teachers and parents just how those confounded new devices actually work.)

*

"The Boys' Cooking Club was proud to offer samples of their latest culinary delight: upside down sideways cake filled with luscious barbecued stringbean stuffing."

(The event was sponsored by Pepto-Bismol.)

*

"The Maccabiah was won by the team that displayed the best middot."

(If the Saints could win the Superbowl, what's so unusual about the Tzaddikim winning this?)

*

"In preparation for the school dinner, we have now assembled no fewer than 796 different versions of what the letters S.A.R. stand for, and we proudly present each and every one of them below."

(Keep it up, and it will certainly result in S.A.R.=Scaring Away Readers.)
                                           *
"SAR congratulates our school representative for finishing 2nd in the nation-wide geography contest."

(The SAR student would have won, but when asked how many countries were between the U.S. and Argentina, answered, 'None, because everyone in America lives in one gigantic area under one roof without any boundaries or borders whatsoever.")

*
"Our junior high school elective course, Running with the Rabbi, led by Rabbi Krauss, once again attracted many excited students."

(In what other educational institution are the students
actively encouraged to literally run away from school--with the principal leading the way?!?!)

                               Haman's SAR Academy Anecdotals

Student Name: Haman HaRasha       Grade 1       Days Absent:  9      Late Arrivals:  45

Teacher(s):  Name omitted to protect the innocent

This year, I have had the unique experience of being Haman's teacher. He is a bright and intelligent person though he has not been channeling these qualities in a productive way. He is often late to class, and makes everyone stand up until he is seated. I would like to add that while we are very open at SAR about our student's unique and quirky habits, we feel that school is not an appropriate place for horses. The horse feed has also created a mice problem in the 1st grade area. During davening, I often have to remind him to open his siddur, and sometimes he can be heard switching his name for Hashem's; but, he continues to improve. Haman enjoys the opportunity to work independently, except for when he can boss the other children around. We are working with him to improve his inter-personal skills. Haman often calls out in class. When someone else answers a question, he is often heard saying, "Oh, I knew that, now bow down to me!" Haman and Rabbi Krauss have developed a special relationship this year; in fact, they share an office. Haman loves to draw. He has made many pictures of trees, and seems to have a great interest in them. Haman is in my reading group, and loves to read the story of "Yertle the Turtle" by Dr. Seuss. He sometimes has trouble sitting in groups, and has not heard the stories' ending. Perhaps, it would be a good choice for his reading log. Overall, Haman is an interesting boy who has not reached his full potential. It was a joy to have him in my class this year.

chavie and zeldaIF YOU LISTEN TO THE SOUNDS of SAR , YOU WILL HEAR MANY SOUNDS LIKE:

ZIPPING of sliding on the banister
SINGING from the classroom
DINGING of the bells

But if you really listen you will hear the most prevalent sound: THE RINGING OF CHAVIE AND ZELDA'S PHONES. If you listen in you will hear the real goings on of SAR Academy. Here are  phone calls from a typical day:

~Can you tell my daughter I'm running 3 minutes late for pick-up?

~Can you tell my daughter that Bruno moved her hair appointment to 5:30 P.M.?

~Can you tell my daughter I'm running 2 minutes late for pick-up?

~Can you tell my son that I love him but not before his math class and please wait until after his
  Krauss test?

~Can I call you back to be sure he got the message but make certain he does not know I called?

~Can you tell my son that Joey can't come for a playdate, but Billy will come instead if Josh is not
  available?

~Please call me back and let me know how he took the news of American Idol being a rerun?

~Can you please give me the information on the RJC Spring baseball league?

~Our family is going on an extended trip to the Bahamas, can you please contact all of my four
  children's teachers, grades: 2, 4, 7, 10? We are leaving tomorrow at 6:00 A.M. Send the work
  with each of them. Thanks.

~Can you check on my son; I just dropped him off and I want to make sure he got there? I left him
at the top of the hill because of the traffic.

~Can you tell my daughter I'll be there any minute for pick-up?

~My daughter just called from her cell phone. (I know she's not supposed to use her cell phone,
but it's an emergency.) Can you tell her, "Yes, we can go shopping tonight."

~Is it too late to send in my child's picture money even though picture day was SIX months ago?

~Mom: "Joey's pet frog died this morning and I know Joey is very sad, but I just went into his room and the frog is alive."

~Dad: "Can you tell my son he has a new baby brother?"

~Lawyer Mom: "Please tell my daughter that I got to court on time and that the judge didn't yell at me."

               *Anonymous Donor Purchases Wave Hill
                        for New SAR Parking Garage*

wave hillAn anonymous donor has purchased the 28 acre garden known as "Wave Hill" to solve SAR's parking woes. Ground will be broken at the end of the month for a 10,000 car garage which will service the SAR community. The donor, who insisted on remaining anonymous for fear of reprisals from the National Audubon Society and local tree huggers, maintains that the character of Wave Hill will not be altered by the garage. The garage project comes at an opportune time for the school. On a recent Friday afternoon, security guards had to separate two drivers in the upper parking lot who were both trying to exit the lot. The drivers, Ahava N'appointment and Gitta Cookfer-Shabbos, had to be pulled from their minvans and were forced to sit together on the steps and make solicitation phone calls for the dinner journal. In another incident, a parent was arrested for loitering on Independence Avenue at 3 a.m. The parent insisted that he had only just arrived to park for the Chumash Play. The school has assured local residents and parents that the new garage will resolve these issues.

                                  *Bar Coding at SAR*

bar coding
S/A/R Academy and S/A/R High School will be implementing a new security measure over the next few months. We find it necessary to address two issues.

1. The number of visitors entering the buildings daily

2.The inadequate compliance with "right time right place", especially at the High School
All individuals entering the S/A/R/ buildings will have unique, self adhesive bar codes placed on their foreheads. Visitor's codes will be programmed to expire when they should no longer need to be present in the building. Students and faculty will have non-expiring codes. Faculty and administrators will be equipped with hand held wireless bar code readers. They will be encouraged to "scan" individuals and students in the hallways. This will allow us to identify and track the movement of visitors. Students not in the "right time and place" will be easily identified.
Automatic scanners will be placed in certain key locations, such as the entrances to the lunchroom, library area, and bathrooms. We will use the system to charge for lunchroom use, and expect this to simplify the current lunch "charge" system at the high school. Note that there are no immediate plans to bill for bathroom use, and that the library is expected to remain free for moderate users.

We do expect several objections and some resistance to the concept. Several individuals have raised concerns that white bar codes will clash with certain clothing and certain hair styles. We plan to offer bar codes in several neutral shades and, for a small fee, bright blue, pink, lavender, and yellow. Those with long bangs will be lent bobby pins so that the bar codes are visible at all times. Those without hair are still encouraged to wear the bar code forward on their forehead, to facilitate reading the codes. We have been assured by the manufacturer that the adhesive is tree nut and peanut free.

The administration expects full cooperation in implementing this important security measure.  We will be open to suggestions to improve the system (suggestions taken daily 8:29 am to 8:30 am, except every odd numbered Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or even numbered Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hours may be extended on Rosh Chodesh).

*SAR Business Office Planning Launch of New
                    Middle School Building Campaign!!*

The journal dinner was quite a success but in fundraising there is no time to rest. Our 180 middleheidi school students need more space. SAR Olympics really requires space for an Olympic size pool. Topsy-turvy day would benefit from make-up and dressing rooms. Color War, well obviously each team needs private headquarters.
Please support for this effort. We are now selling off the following items to fund the purchase of land to build our new middle school.
We have no walls, why have desks....
                 All Academy Desks.... $250 Each
                 Aged laptops.......        $1500 each
We have very smart smartboards, why have blackboards....
Old black and green boards..... $500 Each
Academy students are accustomed to sitting on the floor, sell the chairs...
                Student desk chairs....    $100 Each
If desk chairs are color.... $250 Each
We know there is always bus seat contention. End that by purchasing a naming opportunity and a designated seat on your child's bus... priceless.
                Selected seats on the bus....
                Front row.... $5000 per seat
                Back row....         $10,000 per seat
                Middle rows... $1000 per seat
Naming opportunities...
Tree adjacent to the field....        $5000 per branch or $1,000,000 for the whole tree

Please respond to this appeal promptly. The opportunity will expire on 16 Adar.
