4 week Sessions Once Upon a Talmud: Stories of the Gemara The halachik text of the Talmud is interspersed with stories that serve as a window into the rabbinic imagination. How are we to understand rabbinic stories, how do they develop, and why are they told? We will analyze both stories told about rabbis and stories that retell biblical tales in an attempt to answer these questions. Instructor: Lisa Schlaff Tuesdays, October 20, 27, November 3, 10 Free! Elisha-Prophet of the People Elisha was a simple man, plowing in the field, when Eliyahu anointed him to be the next prophet of Israel. He had the daunting task of taking over after Eliyahu, while charting his own path to try to reach out to the Jewish people. Through a close reading of the text, we will analyze Elisha's growth as he takes his place among the great leaders of Israel. Instructor: Karen Goldscheider Tuesdays, November 24, December 1, 8, 15 Free! |
