A Message from Rabbi Krauss

Dear Parents,                          Bini

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Mazel Tov to our graduates, and to thank all of those who made this year's graduation so meaningful and special. Special thanks to parent volunteers Atara Gorsetman and MJ Kanner for organizing and tending to every detail with love.

I would like to thank Diane Hill and Benay Meisels who are completing their "tour of duty" as PTC co-presidents.  From the Parenting Yom Iyun, to our Yom Haaztmaut celebrations, and the many new initiatives that they have organized, we are indebted to them for their selfless dedication and devotion to the parents, faculty, and children of SAR. We will miss you.
Acharon acharon chaviv, thank you to all of our faculty for completing another year and for all that they do for each and every child.

Best wishes to you and your children for a healthy, productive, and rejuvenating summer. Please encourage your children to daven and learn Torah every day.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Binyamin Krauss

                              Thank you!

I want to thank the Chadashot team (my right arms- everyone needs a few of those!) for all their support and making this weekly endeavor possible: Stacy Horowitz, Sara Grinfeld, Lanie Kellman, Chavie Wilner, Sara Wirzburger, Danny Lee, and Gili Seret; the SAR Administrative Team whose guidance, encouragement, and support is essential and meaningful; and acharon acharon chavivim, the many, many teachers (and students!) who kept us informed about the magnificent work occurring in their class areas. I always knew SAR was incredible, and taking this editor's magnifying glass to our school has, well . . . magnified that conviction.

Thank you so much,
Sharon Marson

graduation 2009 graduation

Another eighth grade class has graduated from SAR Academy. The class of 2009 has seen the school through a lot of changes, many of which they shared with friends, family, and teachers on Wednesday night during their graduation ceremony. In kind, the class made changes to the traditional graduation ceremony. This year, the students wrote many of the lines they spoke, while other students sang, and still others chose to participate in a girls' or a boys' dance. The boys danced with hats, passing them back and forth to each other and flipping them onto their heads. The girls added white knee-socks and white gloves to their outfits to create an interesting effect under a black light.

Speaking on their own, or in conversation with a friend, the students stepped up to the microphone to lead the audience on a journey of their time at SAR. They stepped up from the ELC to the main building, stepped onto the stage for various grade-wide assemblies, stepped onto busses for school trips, and stepped inside SAR from other schools. As they stepped up for a final time as the eighth grade class of 2009, the students thanked their teachers and administrators for all they were taught both in and out of the classroom. As they concluded in their cantata: "Stepping up from the ELC to the big building, and now getting ready to step up to high school have been amazing experiences at SAR Academy.  SAR has given us the tools we need for high school and for that we are so grateful.  We are also grateful for having been given the opportunity to participate in bowl-a-thons and walk-a-thons, all of the wonderful chagiggot, and the Israel Day Parade. SAR has always made Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael central to our lives, and the love for our land and our people is one we will take with us when we walk through these doors as the graduating class of 2009."

Mazal Tov to our graduates!

Fifth Grade Walking Tour of the
                            Lower East Side
              _______________________________

The fifth grade went on a trip to the Tenement Museum this week. We went on a walking tour and our first stop was to the Bialystoker shul. The shul is very pretty and has symbols everywhere. The ceiling was painted like the sky and is made up of three different shades of blue. This represents shacharit, mincha, and ma'ariv. Our second stop was to a shteibel. The shteibel is still used today and some of the siddurim are used frequently and some are old. We went to the library and learned about it. Kids would go there after school at every chance they had. We went to The Pickle Guy and got pickles. We leaned that you could "pickle" almost every vegetable! We ate lunch in the park and then went to the Tenement Museum. We did three different activities. One of them involved visiting Victoria Confino. We pretended we were a Russian family and she invited us in to learn about American life. The next activity was that we pretended we were a Chinese family and we had a choice of three places to live. It mattered about the space, the monthly rent, and there were so many decisions to choose. We then watched a movie that the history channel put together. That was the end of our day visiting the Tenement Museum.

                       Birchot Yaakov Carnival
                     _______________________

What's that boat obstacle course doing in 4Z? Why are those kids blindfolded and trying to place fake food into a king's hands? Why are those milk cartons flying into a lion's mouth? It's 4Z's unique, homemade Birchot Yaakov Carnival!

Birkat Yaakov Birkat Yaakov

This past Thursday morning, the fourth graders enjoyed the educational reinforcement of the blessings that Yaakov gave his offspring before he died, lessons for the future shevatim, tribes of Israel, in the form of a carnival. The entire fourth grade, whom you may have heard singing the "Birchot Yaakov" lately, attended 4Z's homemade carnival. Students took turns slithering like a snake under chairs (Dan), finding their way through a maze to bring flowers from Reuven to Leah, racing in a Naftali scavenger hunt, throwing darts to separate Shimon and Levi, and playing Torah Jeopardy (Yissochar), among other booths.

Morah Mindy praised her students, "4Z collaborated creatively to produce this fun, interactive educational activity for the grade, which I am sure they will all remember forever."

                     Running To Do Chesed
                    _______________________

              Sopher Dedication
Morris Sopher, z"l, was a runner, both literally and in the best sense of the word. "The first time the word run is used in the Torah," Rabbi Krauss said in speaking at the dedication of the track at the high school, "was when Avraham ran to do chesed, running to greet his guests. This day," Rabbi Krauss continued, "is about running, running to keep our bodies healthy, but also running to do chesed, a trait that exemplifies the Sopher family."

With Marilyn Sopher's grandchildren and the students from the eighth grade elective, "Running With The Rabbi", present, Mrs. Sopher dedicated to SAR a beautiful track in memory of her husband, Morris. "Running was his passion," she told the children, "and he instilled that love in our children, Barbara, Jonathan, and Lisa. He also loved doing mitzvot and he loved SAR. He would love to see this track at SAR High School," Marilyn Sopher concluded.

With great gratitude we thank the Sopher family; many SAR students will derive much joy from this outstanding gift.

Second And Fourth Grades

Clowning around can bring smiles, as our second and fourth graders found out when volunteer clowns visited their grades this past Thursday to speak about the organization Lev Leytzan: The Compassionate Clown Alley, Inc. It is a nonprofit organization that trains ambitious youth to use their talent and compassion to deliver doses of laughter and joy to the community through medical/therapeutic clowning and circus arts. Lev Leytzan's clowns provide entertainment to brighten the day of people, of all ages and affiliations, who are medically ill or recovering from serious illnesses. They offer their services with sensitivity, compassion, and mounds of love, using humor to lift the spirits along with their parents, doctors, and nurses charged with their care.

band aid project lev leytzan2

The second and fourth graders had the wonderful opportunity to learn from this organization. The clowns spoke with them about the work they do, showed them a few tricks, and presented an inspiring slide show of their clowning in action at various facilities. "Giving is one of the greatest blessings we have," one clown said. "I leave the experience saying, 'Wow, I made a difference.'" another commented. Our students then got in on the act themselves by participating in a chesed project. Lev Leytzan will soon distribute decorated pillow cases our second graders made for hospitalized children in Israel as well as band-aid boxes our fourth graders designed for hospitalized children at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Thank you to the Meller family who sponsored this meaningful project in memory of their son, Zack Meller z"l. They offer a special thank you to Daniel Rothner and his interns from Areyvut for helping facilitate this project.

                          Character Counts
                       ___________________
                                                                                          -Jo Steiner

I signed up for a faculty group this year called "Character Counts." We met monthly
to discuss how to enable the positive character development of the students. Throughout the meetings, we talked about living by example. Over the last few weeks, I experienced first-hand, the amazing character of the people at SAR. My mother fell two Shabbats ago and broke her hip. She required surgery and thank G-d, is healing, doing well and is back at home.

The outpouring of support I received from SAR was amazing. Some wonderful examples: a principal, who is a former student of my mother's, said he would keep her in his mind in his prayers on his recent trip to Israel; my Director who talked me through the ordeal emotionally, checked in on me, and even tried to hold up traffic so I could return to the hospital after picking up my own children from school; the first grade team who sent countless emails and text messages inquiring about my mother and offering their love and support; my former assistant who showed up at my doorstep with a baked ziti and a plate of cookies for my children; an assistant who took over the class in my absence with only love in her heart and had the class make lovely get well cards; a friend/colleague who made a special chocolate cake to celebrate my mother's return from rehab; class parents who offered prayers, best wishes, and even meals for my family; my daughter's nursery teacher who gave me a hug just when I needed it the most; my son's daycare teacher who offered to take both kids home after school; a school nurse who emails me to inquire how she is doing (my mother teaches her son); and to so many people who asked about my mother and offered well wishes when I returned to school after being absent for a week--those are the acts of kindness we want to instill in our children.

We can live by example and show our children how to visit the sick, give tzedakah, offer to help those in need, make a meal for a friend, etc.  They see us do these acts of chesed, which can really have an effect on their character development. They see a faculty, a parent body and an administration who support each other through good times and bad. That is why we send our children to SAR. It's a family. I am lucky to be a part of it and wanted to say thank you.

There was a graduation party at Rabbi Krauss' house, actually a barbecue. The eighth graders received their yearbooks while there. We enjoyed the food, it was fun, and before we were given our yearbooks, Rabbi Krauss told us he would miss us. It was a great way to celebrate us graduating and moving on to new lives in different high schools.

In Parshat שלח ךך the 12 spies are sent into ארץ כנען to scout out the land. When they return all of them say that ארץ כנען is a beautiful land, but 10 of them say that B'nei Yisrael can't conquer ארץ כנען . Yehoshua and Calev say that they can conquer ארץ כנען but nobody believes them. Why then doesn't anyone believe Yehoshua and Calev? I agree with the Midrash that says that B'nei Yisrael believed the 10 spies, because they outnumbered Yehoshua and Calev. B'nei Yisrael believed the majority of the spies.

This teaches us that the majority isn't always right. If there is no doubt in your mind, and especially if Hashem promises a good outcome then you shouldn't go with the majority, but you should trust your heart.
