Help SAR Science Students
SAR High School's Biology department has already earned the recognition of the College Board, which said that SAR was "leading the country for schools of its size, both in terms of Advance Placement Biology scores, and the rate of student participation."
SAR HS takes students to visit science laboratories, encourages them to look into careers in the sciences through their Senior Exploration projects, and occasionally seek summer internships. Please contact Sari Steinberg by email or at 718-548-1717 x1230 if you would like to invite SAR students to visit your laboratory, or to learn more in-depth about your field. |

Once In a Blue Moon -- or, rather, a Genesis Sun
Every 28 years, Jews gather to recite a unique bracha on Erev Pesach after sunrise, when the sun reaches the position it was in at the time of creation. The last Birkat HaChama was in 1981. Where were you then?
You are invited to join SAR staff, students, and other alumni on the beautiful SAR Academy field at 9:30 a.m. (please note new time) on Wednesday, April 8. If you can't make it this time, please mark your calendar for March 30, 2037.
If you did not receive SAR's Birkat HaChama brochure in the mail, we probably do not have your current email address. Please click here so that we can include you in future mailings.

Michael Schreck (z"l) Memorial Basketball Games
Raising over $3,000 in memory of SAR's beloved past executive director, SAR staff and students battled over the 2009 title in the fourth annual Michael Schreck Memorial Basketball Games on Wednesday, March 25. Both games - female staff vs. the 7th and 8th grade girls' team, and male staff vs. the 8th grade boys' team - started off with the singing of the National Anthem and the Hatikvah and included inspirational words about Michael Schreck's friendliness and his dedication to helping people while preserving their dignity. The undefeated staff teams won both games, 60-41 and 80-42, respectively. "It's both sad and special to be playing in memory of Michael Schreck," said Debra May Zeitchik, SAR alumna ('85) and current executive director. "And it's good to be back on the court." |
One Classy Class
The Class of '79 is soaring! Led by Dena Weiss Levie and Neil Wasserman, with the help of Google and other high- and low-tech networking, this trendsetting class found 100 percent of its members in time for a phenomenal 30th anniversary reunion at the SAR 40th Anniversary Dinner.
Former classmates met up to visit SAR and then went to the High School for dinner, a presentation, and hours of catching up. Additional Pictures will be posted on the SAR website shortly, and alumnus Akiva Abraham has created a blog.
The class also gave the school a generous gift in memory of their beloved classmate, JJ Greenberg, z"l. JJ's parents, Blu and Rabbi Yitz Greenberg, and his siblings, Moshe ('76) and Deborah ('78), represented him at the reunion. Classmates were fascinated to find that their friends now include prominent Jewish scholars, a member of the US Navy, an Israeli judge, dancers, doctors, law enforcement professionals, businesspeople, an artist, and more. |
Wall-Free Assembly for Gilad Shalit
Marking the thousandth day since Hamas kidnapped Gilad Shalit, SAR gathered for an all-school assembly - all over the school without walls. As students sat in uncharacteristic silence all over the school, Rabbi Binyamin Krauss ('84) introduced the program and recited a tefillah for Gilad's release. Then, with music broadcast over the PA system, the entire student body simultaneously watched a powerful Powerpoint presentation prepared in-house by Israeli staff members and played on Smartboards in individual class areas.
