Rosh Chodesh Adar
"Mishenichnas Adar Marbim B'Simcha." When Adar comes our joy increases.
Simply Tsfat, through their music, fused together heaven and earth and increased our joy in celebrating Rosh Chodesh Adar at SAR. "Although the Chasidic master, Rebbe Nachman of Bratslav passed from the world in 1810, he lives on through the music of Simply Tsfat," Chassidic musicians from the Breslev community in Tsfat, Israel, explained.
The unique presentation of Simply Tsfat was inspiring for our students. Stories, personal anecdotes, and Chassidic teachings were interwoven with powerful lyrics and enchanting music inherited from an authentic tradition handed down from the time of Rebbe Nachman. Acoustic guitarist and vocalist Elyahu Reiter and violinist Yehonason Lipshutz join forces to present Breslev Chassidic music, story-telling and teachings of Rebbe Nachman. Simply Tsfat's warm and intimate style conveyed a deep love of chassidic life, its music, and its joy. Our students were inspired to sing, dance, and celebrate.

Girl's Basketball Clinic
______________________

Open to third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade girls, Mrs. Jenny Horowitz and Ms. Tali Cohen led a vacation basketball clinic on Monday and Tuesday of the February break in the SAR gym. From 8:45 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon, the girls improved their basketball skills, participated in games and contests, and played other sports as well. Together, they ate lunch and received prizes. Offered for the first time, was it successful? The girls sure thought so: "Basketball camp was really fun." Avigayil Grajower told the Chadashot. "We played cool games. I had a great time. I know I'm going back next time."

Echoes and Silences
Morah Debby Sondheim led the second 'Your Turn to Learn' Series on Wednesday morning entitled, "Echoes and Silences: Lessons for Our Time From the Exodus Narrative". Where are the echoes and silences in the first two chapters of Shemot? Why are those echoes and silences there? The very first pasuk of Shemot is an echo of a verse in Parashat Vayigash. This was used as a technique to help the people remember the verses when the text was heard and not read. Words are echoed as well throughout the text: first "avodah" and then "hamiyaledet" to emphasize important themes in the text. And the silences? The book is called Shemot, and yet, once the slavery in Egypt begins, the Jews remain nameless. Paraoh is the first one to call the people "am" or "nation". Neither Moshe, his parents, or his sister's names are mentioned, only their actions. Names speak to identity; in slavery there is no personal identity. The names only come back when the exodus from Egypt begins and the actions of Bat Paraoh, knowingly defying her father's decree and saving a Hebrew baby boy, shows us, according to Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, the wonderful potential lying in everyone.

First Grade Learns About England
__________________________________
On Friday, February 20, 2009, first grade was privileged to host Uri Craimer's "mum", grandparents, and uncle Aaron (aged 10) from London, England to teach Classes 1X, Y and Z about England for our school-wide Jewish Communities Around The World unit. This was an opportunity to ask about Jewish life in London.
The children prepared many interesting questions, such as: "How does it feel to be a Jewish person in England?" "Are the shuls the same?" "Do you have kosher restaurants and are the kosher symbols the same as they are here?" The students chuckled as a first grader asked, "Have you met the Queen?" They also had a lot of questions about the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace.
The children were fascinated with the English money Uri's grandparents brought along. They also loved hearing the different words that British people use, like "trainers" instead of "sneakers", "pavement" for sidewalk, and "pants" and "knickers" for "underwear." We found out a lot about the Jewish schools in England, from Aaron including that the siddur they use in England is the same as ours!
We hope to establish contact with a Jewish school in London shortly. The visit was delightful and Uri's grandparents were great sports!!

Our Chesed Reaches Children in Israel
____________________________________
Former SAR student, Jamie Schneider, who is presently in Israel at Midreshet Amit, delivered pens that SAR students decorated during Chesed Week to children in Beit Hayeled, a group home in Israel for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. In honor of Tu B'Shvat a Bingo game was held for the children there, and our pens were distributed as prizes. As Jamie wrote, "They really liked them!"
Here are three of the thank you notes the Beit Hayeled children wrote:
Hi- My name is Oar. Thank you for the present. I will enjoy it a lot. Shalom, have a good day Oar
Hi- My name is Shiloh and I'm 10 years old. I live in Yerushalyim. Thank you very much for the gift- it made my day! Love, Shiloh
Hi- My name is Adin and I live at Beit Hayeled in Gilo. Thank you for the pens and stickers that you sent me. I love them.

Fifth Grade Learns "A Video Is
Worth A Thousand Words" ______________________________
Over the past few weeks, the fifth grade has been working on a very special project in their computer class. They have been creating videos that show their support for the Israeli chayalim.
"After Israel went into Gaza, I noticed that there was a lot of anti-Israel/IDF propaganda that was being generated. I thought that it would be appropriate for SAR not only to express their appreciation towards the chayalim for what they do, but to also generate some positive media of their own," said Rivka Heisler, the technology educator.
Students were introduced to the concept of "visual literacy"; thinking about the message a photograph suggests. If a picture is worth a thousand words, SAR students thought about the photographs of Tzahal that they saw on the Internet and selected ones that would express the most positive images of who our chayalim are and what they do. Afterwards, they uploaded the selected photographs to a free service called Animoto, added appropriate text and music from the Voices from Israel CD. The results amazed even Mrs. Heisler. "They came out better than I ever dreamed they would"
Video by Liat Katz and Elisheva May:
Video by Hannah Siegel and Tamar David:
When all the projects are completed they will be uploaded to You Tube for all the world to see.

Third Graders Write To President Obama
______________________________________
After Mrs. Kafer's 3rd grade readers finished The Kid Who Became President by Dan Gutman, they wrote their own letters to President Barack Obama. They've been checking the mail ever since, looking for a response to their letters. Dear President Obama, I am a third grade student at the S.A.R. Academy in Riverdale, N.Y. I'm so excited that you're our new president. Are you excited about being president? Does your Secretary of Defense have a secretary? Do you believe in Abraham Lincoln's ghost? How did you feel when Chief Justice Roberts forgot to say faithfully? What did you do after the Inauguration? How do you like the White House? Was it cool to use Abraham Lincoln's bible? In my reading group, I just finished reading The Kid Who Became President. It was about a 12-year-old boy who became president. After one year as president, he decided to resign because he thought he wasn't smart enough to be president. You will be a great president! CONGRATULATIONS! Sincerely, Nili Raskas Dear President Obama, My name is Danya Benovitz. I'm 9 years old and a third grader at the S.A.R. Academy. In the book we just read, The Kid Who Became President, a 12-year-old boy becomes president. The things I learned about the president are that the president has a lot of work, and the president cannot make a law by himself. My questions are: Do you still have a hot line that connects you to Russia? Are secret service men always around you? I recommend the book to Sasha and Malia because it will help them learn about what happens in the White House. I'm so excited to have an African-American as president. Please write back! Sincerely, Danya Benovitz. Dear President Obama, Hi, my name is Shmuel Crisafi. I am a third grade boy. I just read a book called The Kid Who Became President by Dan Gutman. I learned that that the president cannot make laws all by himself. Does the White House really have a pool? I recommend the book for Malia and Sasha because they will learn about your job. I am excited because this is a new moment in history!! Are you going to protect Israel? Good luck, and please write back to me! Sincerely, Shmuel Crisafi

What Do You Like To Do When It Snows?
_______________________________________
The children in N4 were asked by their morot Susan Rosh, Lisa Wieder, and Stephanie Lederman, "What do you like to do when it snows?" Here are their responses:
Jordan - "I like to catch snowflakes outside with my Mommy and Daddy and brother. We like to make snow people and name them. We give them funny names like Panina."
Ben - "I like to dig snow off my Mini Cooper with my Daddy. We take a shovel and scoop snow. We also use a broom and sweep down the snow." Tal - "I get to slide down hills on a sled and I get to make snow angels. My Mommy helps me get up sometimes if I am scared that I am going to mess it up. I get to stomp around in the snow." Zaine - "I like to make snow angels with my friends. I also like to throw snowballs at the ship in the playground." Talia - "I like making a snowman with my Mommy and Daddy. We make snowballs and throw them at each other." Hershel - "I like to make snowmen and snow angels with Mommy and Daddy. I like to lick the snow when it drops from the sky." Eli - "I like to play in the snow and throw snowballs at my Daddy. Ben and I throw snowballs at Uri and then we go inside because it's cold." Jared - "I can make snowballs and snow angels with my Daddy. Me and my Daddy do a snowball fight and its fun." Noa - "I like to make snow angels and then eat the snow. I play in the snow with my sisters and we have a snow fight and the snow goes in my face." Daniel - "I like to go down the slide in my backyard with snow on it. I like to run down the snowy hill." Avishai - I like to make a snowman and decorate it. I put a carrot on his head for a nose and I make three circles for a mouth and put buttons for eyes." Noam - "I just walk around in the snow and the footprints make a big city. I like to dig and then bury things in the snow." Leora - "I like to make snow angels with my sister and brother. I have snowball fights with my Mommy and Daddy and brother and sister. The snow goes on everyone's jackets." Benjamin - "I like to make footprints in the snow and go on snow hikes. I like to go on adventures and make snowballs." |

דבר תורה : Parashat Terumah
|
By: Estie Ben-Meir
Grade: 2nd
After the Jewish people got out of Egypt, Hashem gave them the Torah and told them to build a Mishkan. Parashat Terumah begins to tell us what they needed to build this Mishkan. The Torah goes into a lot of details about everything that was in the Mishkan. The details continue also in the next parashot until the end of the Book of Shemot.
Why so many details and so many times, when the Mishkan was only temporary? This is because the Mishkan was very important and for things that are important or things that we like, we go over and over again and we talk a lot about them. Also, every person has to be like a walking Mishkan to serve Hashem-and this is not temporary but ongoing all the time.

| Friends, Partners, and Allies With Israel
|
The Israeli Consulate has launched a project of designing a stamp to honor Israel at 60. Students up to age 18 can submit designs representing the theme: "United States and Israel: Friends, Partners, and Allies."
The United States of America and Israel have been great friends and close allies ever since Israel's independence was established in 1948. Our two countries have many common attributes and share ideologies such as democracy, economic freedom and environmental preservation.
As a country formed on the basis of immigration, Israel can relate to American history and how learning to live together and realize one's dream is a driving force in life.
This year Israel celebrates her 60th birthday. This competition provides a great opportunity to express creativity through art and design, while also learning about the strong connections and similarities between our two countries.
Stamps are important symbols of a nation. They reflect the past, present and future, in a range of topics such as sports, culture, nature and politics. We invite you to design a stamp representing US-Israel shared values and accomplishments.
For complete details, visit www.israel60stamp.com
