A Message from Rabbi Krauss

bini with kids
Dear Parents,

Mazel Tov to our second graders on receiving their chumashim this week. We noticed how in awe the children are to hold their new sefer, and the regard with which they open it for the first time. Thank you to the second grade team for all their efforts in preparing our students for this important milestone in their educational development, and for their ongoing commitment to fostering a sense of wonderment and excitement for learning Torah.

Yasher koach as well, to our eighth graders whose behavior in Ottowa was exemplary; their derech eretz made us proud. This was the tenth anniversary of our Ottowa Shabbaton. The community loves welcoming us back year after year, which is a tribute to our students and to the hard work of Rabbi Drelich and the entire staff.

Please take some time over vacation to be קובע עתים לתורה , set aside time to daven daily and to learn each day. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday morning, February 17th invigorated and ready to learn. Enjoy vacation.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Binyamin Krauss

What better way to encourage students to study and learn Tanach than by involving them in a national Bible competition? It's an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency of Tanach and to express love for Jewish heritage, Am Yisrael, Medinat Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael.

Six students, coached by Israeli fellow, Inbar Steinberg, participated in the first two of three regional tests of Chidon HaTanach. The National Bible Contest draws students from diverse schools and communities from all over the world.

We wish our Tanach Laureates: Tzipporah Rossman, Yehuda Karol, Yannai Segal, Azriel Fine, Yishai Chamudot, and Yosef Paperno,  hatzlacha in this meaningful endeavor.

Fifth Grade is voting! With the Israeli elections coming up in a week, the fifth graders are learning about voting in Israel and the parliamentary system.
                              israeli election
To make tangible the idea of a coalition, students discussed and chose issues they wanted changed in school. The fifth graders learned about different political parties in Israel including: Likud, Labor Shas, the Arab-Israeli party, the Environmental party, and more. SMART Boards were used as a learning tool to give students greater understanding of each party. The fifth graders then decided with which party they wished to be affiliated, and represented it by designing posters and campaigning. On Thursday and Friday this study is culminating with b'chirot, elections. Stay posted to find out the fifth grade winner.

                      IDF Soldier Visits SAR
                    _____________________

soldierFriends of IDF are bringing soldiers from the Israeli army to schools to educate children about what our chayalim do for our country. Captain Yaniv Avraham grew up on a kibbutz near Yerushalayim and is now part of a select group of soldiers that tries to free hostages. He spoke with third, fourth, seventh and eighth grade students about his high level of training, presented videos about the training and about combat, and held a question and answer period.

Third graders asked among other questions: Do you get time to eat and sleep?; Were you in Gaza?; Were you in a tank?; What type of gun do you use?

Captain Avraham met with many rounds of applause. Our students appreciated both his presentation and the work he does as as a chayal in Tzahal.

In Mrs. Burian's sixth grade math group Mr. Leon Metzger kicked off this year's Stock Market Game with an interactive discussion about the fundamentals of the stock market and an analysis of today's dismal economy. Mr. Metzger, teaches hedge-fund management as an adjunct professor and lecturer at Columbia, NYU, and Yale, also helped guide the students in establishing investment strategies in today's economic climate.  We wish our sixth graders much luck as each team invests a hypothetical $100,000 in an online portfolio.

חדשות בכיתות : The Chumash Play!

           chumash play

The second graders proudly sang with strong voices to an equally proud audience. They obviously understood the joy of this momentous moment as each excitedly received his or her first chumash. Kol HaKavod!
                                         metzger
After the Chumash Play, second graders gathered in their area to meet with Rabbi Barry Katz, an SAR parent, local rabbi, and a sofer. He congratulated the children on their accomplishment, spoke with them about the writing of a Torah, and showed them some of a sofer's tools.

The children considered if it is possible to make a mistake when writing the Torah? Absolutely. But there is also a way to fix mistakes, even one in the Torah, an important life lesson! Thank you Rabbi Katz for sharing your knowledge with us.

We look forward to watching the second graders continuing to grow in learning and love of Torah as they study from their cherished chumashim.

It's That 'KIND' of Week: Standing Together

Kol Hakavod SAR students!

You raised $550 by bringing in to school, up to one dollar (much of it from your own personal savings) in pennies, nickles, dimes, and quarters to support our chayalim. A check was sent to the organization, Standing Together. With the money, snacks were bought for the soldiers on their way in and out of Gaza.

Going to Israel in a Time of War
                                                                              Shalom and Yonah Goldscheider

Together with a small group from our shul, the Mount Kisco Hebrew Congregation, we traveled to Israel on a Solidarity Mission during the war in Gaza.

Along with davening at the Kotel, spending a beautiful Shabbat in Yerushalayim, and doing some touring, we did something very special for the army of Israel. Our shul raised money to donate a portable shul kit that can be used by soldiers. The kit contains siddurim, tallitot, tefillin, and kippot for soldiers to use when they are out in the field or even when they go to battle. We visited an army base near the town of Bet El about 45 minutes north of Yerushalayim. When we came to the base, we presented the army with a new kit. They let us put on the bulletproof vest and helmet that are worn by soldiers and even hold a real M-16 gun.

We feel proud that we visited Israel at a time when the country was involved in a battle in Gaza. We hope that being there was a way to let our brothers and sisters in Eretz Yisrael know how much we care about them. We pray to Hashem for lasting peace in Israel.

                                                           Ottawa Trip
                                                                      by Rani Kubersky

School was closed Wednesday, January 28th, but that didn't stop Rabbi Drelich from taking the eighth graders to Ottawa, Canada. We traveled all night and crossed the border into Canada at 4:30A.M. when customs officials boarded our buses and determined that we eighth graders were harmless and could enter Canada. We were welcomed to the shul Machizekei Hadas with signs that read "Asara Anniversary" in honor of SAR's participation in the Ottawa Shabbaton for the last ten years. Following this, on roughly three to four hours of sleep, the eighth graders trekked up Edelweiss Mountain for a day of skiing and snow tubing. Friday was filled with activities that included ice skating, shopping, and a trip to Parliament. After a busy couple of days, we were happy to welcome Shabbos with our host families in Ottawa. Shabbos was filled with ruach, singing, dancing, and divrei Torah. A special highlight was the panel discussion moderated by Rabbi Drelich. We were asked to submit any questions we had about our spirituality and everyday life. It was nice to have Rabbi Krauss and the teachers speak to us openly and honestly about some of our issues. Thank you so much to Rabbi Drelich and the teachers for making this trip a tremendous success.

chadashot feb 6- dvar torah cropped
After we were slaves in Egypt, Paro finally let us go. We took matzah, wagons, sheep, and maybe camels. The Jews had a cloud in the back and a cloud in the front so they would be safe, and know where to go through the desert.
"We're so nervous! The Reed Sea is in front of us! What should we do?" So Moshe asked Hashem. Then he put his stick over the water like Hashem said, and a man (Nachshon) went in it up to his chin. It opened up and all the Jews got a dry path to get over the Yam Suf. The Egyptians were chasing after them, but the water closed on them after the last Jew was safe. The Mitzrim died. Paro was back behind. The Jews sang a song, 'Az Yashir' because they were so happy and thankful to Hashem. Now we sing it in our tefilah.

In the desert on every day except Shabbat, this food (man) fell from the sky. It tasted like whatever they wanted. They picked up just enough for their family. Hashem said "Don't take extras. It will get rotten!" On Fridays, they could take double and save it for Shabbat, because it's Hashem's day of rest. To remember, we have two challahs on Shabbos.

In the group there were two jealous men, Datan and Aviram. They wanted to make everybody laugh at Moshe so they could be the new leaders. They put out their extra man on Friday night so on Shabbos the Jews would say "Moshe, you said there's no man on Shabbos!!" In the middle of the night, Hashem called the birds and they ate up all the man. On Shabbos the two men called the Jews to see the man, but they were really shocked and embarrassed because it was completely gone!

We learned that if you make a plan to hurt someone's feelings, it might come back to you!

Friends, Partners, and Allies With Israel

flags
The Israeli Consulate has launched a project of designing a stamp to honor Israel at 60.  Students in grades 6 & up can submit designs representing the theme:  "United States and Israel:  Friends, Partners, and Allies."

The United States of America and Israel have been great friends and close allies ever since Israel's independence was established in 1948. Our two countries have many common attributes and share ideologies such as democracy, economic freedom and environmental preservation.

As a country formed on the basis of immigration, Israel can relate to American history and how learning to live together and realize one's dream is a driving force in life.

This year Israel celebrates her 60th birthday. This competition provides a great opportunity to express creativity through art and design, while also learning about the strong connections and similarities between our two countries.

Stamps are important symbols of a nation. They reflect the past, present and future, in a range of topics such as sports, culture, nature and politics. We invite you to design a stamp representing US-Israel shared values and accomplishments.
