Dear Alumni,

What happens when students grow up without walls?  Their potential is boundless.  Start with a look at some of the accomplished alumni featured here - teachers, scholars, volunteers, singers, writers, designers - and then take a look at yourself.  We hope that you have not forgotten SAR's most important lesson: recognizing the greatness in you.

This is the first Alumni Newsletter that SAR is sending to you through cyberspace, but we hope SAR has been with you everywhere you've been.  We are excited to share our news with you - but even more, we want to know what is new with you!

We're working to reconnect with all of our former students - from those who graduated recently from the new SAR High School to those who attended Salanter, Akiba, or Riverdale before the merger.

Please keep sending us stories of warm memories and close friendships.  We would like to help you hold onto all the best aspects of your SAR years and spread the magic to your fellow alumni.  Please email or call (718-548-1717 x1230) to arrange a visit, to help find your classmates, to RSVP for the upcoming Dinner, or to contribute to the Scholarship Fund or the capital campaign to complete work on our buildings.  Your gift will probably qualify for a match - please ask!

Help other former SAR students receive this mailing by forwarding it to them and giving us their contact information.  Much of our data is out of date....  If you haven't done so already, please update your information and send us email addresses for your siblings, cousins, classmates, and other relatives and friends who attended SAR or one of its component schools.

Watch your inbox for future newsletters that will tell you which of your favorite teachers are still here, how the school has grown, and what has remained exactly the same (like banister sliding on the staircases and ball playing in the atrium).  We also hope to have more alumni stories to share.

We need you.  Without you, SAR's yearbooks would have been blank... and SAR would not be infused with such color and character.  Thank you for being a unique member of the SAR alumni body.  We look forward to hearing from you.

With warmest regards from everyone here at SAR,
Sari Steinberg

Alumni You Know
(But didn't know they were alumni)

What do fashion designer Ralph Lauren, award-winning author Chaim Potok, singer Achinoam Nini ("Noa"), and pianist/singer Regina Spektor have in common?

Yes, SAR students do wear Polo shirts, read The Chosen, and sing "Boee Kallah" and "Fidelity" (including at a recent 5th-8th grade talent show)... but there's more:  All four graduated from Salanter Yeshiva or SAR Academy.

Two alumni of the Class of '78 have been in the public eye recently as well.

Rabbi Dr. Joshua Berman, a professor of Bible at Bar-Ilan University in Israel and an Associate Fellow at the Shalem Center, has written his third book, Rabbi Dr. Joshua Berman (Class of '78), Created Equal: How the Bible Broke with Ancient Political Thought (Oxford University Press, 2008).

You can see Josh's classmate, Linda Goodman Dickinson, on the news.  She left her career in the health care industry to become a highly acclaimed SAR-style teacher in Atlanta, Georgia.

SAR's  philosophy, "It's not what you learn, it's who you become" has led to very individualized successes for our alumni, who find their own paths to fulfillment in their private, professional, and communal realms.

SAR continues to take pride in every one of its alumni.  The school today remains focused on fostering the development of individuals who are not only academically and professionally successful, but - most importantly - are comfortable within themselves and with the world around them.

Abigail Feinerman Glass (Class of '85), now an architect (as predicted), is SAR's Alumna of the Year.  Rumor has it that Abby wouldn't accept her husband Ari's proposal until he agreed to send their future children to SAR.  Abby and Ari's children, Joely (3rd grade), Daniella (1st grade), and Samuel (future student) attend SAR, where Abby lends her expertise to the Learning to Look art program and plans to help with interior space programming to perpetuate the special atmosphere of SAR.  Abby and Ari have also helped SAR meet the challenge of improving the campus, through the first gift to qualify for the Beker Family Alumni Match.

SAR's 40th Anniversary Dinner
January 25 at SAR High School

library croppedJoin in the celebration!  SAR is turning forty this year, and we're wishing for a great alumni turnout.  We're even preparing break-out dessert reunions for classes with ten or more representatives present.

The Dinner will be at the new (and still developing) High School campus, in order to maximize Scholarship Fund proceeds.  (This is not the year for hotels.)

If you can't come to the Dinner but can help give an SAR education to students who -- like some of your former classmates -- could not attend without scholarship help, please go to our web page to sponsor an ad in honor of a loved one, the school, or any of our honorees:

Another First for the Class of '79

Congratulations to the Class of '79, led by Dena Weiss Levie and Neil Wasserman, on tracking down 100 percent of its members!

In honor of the class's 30th anniversary of graduating from SAR, the class is going to hold its reunion at the Dinner on January 25, with a private dessert reception -- complete with old yearbooks, photos, and other aids for the stroll down memory lane.  They are also giving a class gift to the school in memory of their beloved classmate, JJ Greenberg, z"l.

This is not the first "first" for the Class of '79, which was also the first to go through all of the grades at SAR Academy after the unification of Salanter, Akiba, and Riverdale schools.

Salanter: 100 Years Young

SAR's first forebear, Salanter Yeshiva, opened its doors in December 1909.  That means that on one level, SAR is gearing up for its centennial anniversary!
