Lou's Note:  Valuing Each Day and Gift

Linda's Update: Looking for Healthy Stories

An Invitation:  Lou's 90th Birthday Party

A Note From Lou

Valuing Each Day and Gift

When I look back at when I first thought about being a priest in the fifth grade and became an altar boy, I became totally attached to the vocation as the best expression of my devotion to the faith.

I came to Mass every day of the week.  That grew into a vocation that occupied almost a full half century of my life.  My faith has been a bulwark for all those years, and has become even more so in the physical crises which I am now facing. I see my faith as a gift.  As the days go by, I try to live up to that.

Lou Golfing at St. AndrewsI value each day immensely, but I also value the days and years in which so many people have been so loyal and so faithful and so rich in their gifts ... to me and to the whole faith.  So I take one day at a time and try to be as grateful and as honest and as devoted to those around me, particularly my loving wife and all the others who have made an impact on those fifty-plus years.

As someone who is almost 90 years old, a day at a time is good.  Whether I live another day, a year or a decade, it is still a small proportion of the time left compared to the time I've lived.

Don't get me wrong, I still look forward to a future of loving service such as each day will give me. I don't look at the end. I look at the richness of the past and the fulfillment of dreams in the future.  I might go so far as to say that might include shooting my age again on the fairways of beautiful Sarasota.

And I hope at that time I will have good buddies with me such as Dan Brent and Jerry Appelby were for the first time.

A song of over half a century ago, reminds me of the meaning of life.  It goes ... "Sweet mystery of life, at last I've found you.  'Tis love alone that rules the world."

I am so appreciative of the love that you express in your many notes, letters and calls.

Linda's Update

Looking for Healthy Stories

Oh so much has happened since last we wrote.  Lou has had two chemo treatments (3 weeks apart).  While on one hand he weathered them quite well ... no nausea, no constipation, no diarrhea, he felt "weak as a kitten" he said, and wasn't up for a lot of running around.

HealingAt the same time, we've done a lot of things to super-charge his immune system, and a few things to attack the cancer itself. However , the chemo compromised his immune system so that he came down with pneumonia again ... resulting in another visit to the hospital.  Yeh!

The good news is that Lou has decided ... no more chemo!

That gives us a chance to beef up the body so it can heal itself.  I'll share with you some of the things we're doing so that if you have ideas or resources that we don't know about yet, that you know about, we'd be happy to hear about them.

I know Lou would like to hear of other situations where folks chose no chemo and did beautifully.  We've learned of many situations already, but you can never have enough inspirational stories and insightful resources.

So if you have a friend, family member or personal experience that you would like to share, feel free to call, come by or write. (See contact info below.)  Lou loves to hear from, and visit with, folks.  It makes him feel more "alive".
