Adverse Drug Reactions   __________________________

According to conservative estimates published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, iatrogenic illness is the third-leading case of death in the United States.  More than 120,000 people die from adverse effects of prescribed medications each year. (Starfield 2000) In Null, et al, 2003 is reported that iatrogenic illness is actually the leading cause of death in the United States and that adverse reactions to prescription drugs are responsible for more that 300,000 deaths per year.

Greetings!

It's fall again and life is moving into full swing.  Family and work schedules begin to take on a life of their own.  It is important that amid the commotion we remember to take care of our individual and family's health needs.  Rest, proper nutrition, exercise and proper nervous system functioning are important concerns that if disregarded will limit our ability to cope with the daily challenges life offers us.

The purpose of this publication is to keep you informed about new research regarding chiropractic and other healthcare options to increase your knowledge about the opportunities available to maintain your health. In this way you will be able to make more informed choices regarding your healthcare.

Sincerely,
Martin Rosen, DC
What is the Definition of Health

"Healthcare" is a term that is in the forefront of most political and social discussions these days.  But what are we actually talking about?  We do not seem to be truly concerned with HEALTH but instead SICKNESS.  All the rhetoric and fighting is focused on how we are going to pay for our diseases not how we are going to maintain or achieve health.

Educating the public on the effects of truly healthy vs. detrimental products and lifestyle choices is one way to diffuse the constant barrage from the marketing sector of their ambiguous advertising model.

From its inception Chiropractic has always been focused on a true healthcare paradigm.  The vitalistic philosophy that chiropractic is based on respects the power of the innate healing ability of the body. For health to be actualized the proper circumstances and building blocks must also be present (see 6 Facets of Health).  The importance of a properly functioning nervous system (protected by the spine and cranium) is paramount to the process.

Your nervous system, simply put, controls and coordinates the function of all cells, tissues, organs, and systems in your body 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  It is constantly monitoring every aspect of your life and functional capabilities and trying to adapt, correct or repair your body when and where necessary.

The main conduits - spinal and cranial nerves - that are responsible for the maintenance and function of this system are protected by the boney structures of your skull and spinal column.  The integrity of these structures directly effects the ability of these nerves to function at an optimal level.  Chiropractic is based on the evaluation and correction of aberrant spinal and cranial bone function that directly effects the ability of the nervous system to perform its work unimpeded.  This is the first step to attaining real health - a nervous system that is functioning to its optimal potential.

"Health is not just the absence of disease but a state of vitality, of energy, of creativity _ a higher state of consciousness.  You and your physical body, and your subtle body too, are part of the body of the universe.  When the intelligence of the universe goes to your body effortlessly and spontaneously, then you are in a state of health.  When for any reason the intellignece of the universe meets resistance, or is blocked, you start to experience discomfort, of disease (dis-ease).  Health is the state of awareness in which your intelligence and all the elements and forces that structure your body are in complete harmony with the elements and the forces that structure the body of the universe.  When one is in complete alignment with the other, that is health.  We call this entrainment.  Entrainment is a state in which there is harmonious interaction of elements and forces between different relationships." - Deepak Chopra

The vehicle for this "entrainment" is your nervous system.
Mechanics Rule Cell Biology

"Mechanical forces are ubiquitous and are known to greatly influence physiology and pathophysiology in humans. Mechano-responsive cells are responsible for these mechano-effects, as years of intensive mechanobiology research have shown that external mechanical forces influence a wide spectrum of cellular events, including alterations in cell proliferation, differentiation, gene expression, and protein production."

Tidbits: Changing Your Diet Can Change Your Life

Sanjay Gupta MD is a man with a mission: to promote a plant-based diet as an effective cure and prevention against heart disease.

In the piece, Dr. Gupta affirms that research shows people who followed Dr. Esselstyn's diet became heart attack proof, while people who dropped out of his program and went back to the standard American diet -- died of or got sicker with heart disease.

A plant-based diet works! says Dr. Gupta. Good food heals, bad food kills. It's really that simple.
