On-line Travel Agencies Update
Accommodations Tax collections

The on-line travel agency industry is still in DC and working full force for a federal tax exemption.  We continue to keep the issue at the forefront of all discussions with our South Carolina delegation.  Several lawsuits are wrapping up around the country and the verdicts seem to be a variety of settlements along with wins and losses.  We may be able to amend our state legislation, as North Carolina did this month, to ensure that all taxes collected are remitted.
Catherine will be in DC at the end of September.  If you have any thoughts on the issue that she can share, please contact her directly.

Southern Legislative Conference
And, a good time was had by all!

The Southern Legislative Conference was held the first week of August and our staff was on-hand to assist with many of the various activities.  Special thanks to several of our members that helped to play host: Renaissance Hotel Charleston, Mills House Hotel, Doubletree Guest Suites, Kings Courtyard Inn and King Charles Inn.  Also several of our board members jumped in to set up some special treats.  Thanks to Sarah Ragsdale, SC Aquarium, for the behind the scenes children's tour and to Mike Saboe, The Culinary Institute of Charleston, for providing 3 culinary related spouse courses.

The conference had an estimated economic impact of $3.6 million - not bad for August!  Just as important, it gave us a chance to show many of the SC legislators just how important tourism is to the economy. Thanks to Speaker Bobby Harrell and his wife, Cathy, for bringing this meeting home!
