ATTENTION: Allied Members
Don't miss out on this unique opportunity!
Allied Alley will take place this year on November 18 at the Hilton Garden Inn Charleston Airport.  The Association is offering each allied member an opportunity to display their goods on a 6-foot table at no charge.  GCHMA will be conducting a "scavenger - hunt" raffle encouraging attendees to visit each vendor.  We also encourage you to do a give-away of something representing your own company.

We hope that you will take advantage of this great opportunity!  Please contact Martha Bratton to reserve your spot today!

Marie Bolt

Work: The Sanctuary Hotel

A native of Seneca, South Carolina, Marie Bolt is working toward an Associates Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management at The Culinary Institute of Charleston, as well as Certificates in Event Management, Hotel Operations, and Food and Beverage Operations. After graduating in May 2010, she hopes to her continue her education at the College of Charleston, taking a double major in Hospitality Management and Accounting or Finance. This fall Marie is taking courses in Food Service Management, Hospitality Software Applications, Beverage Service Management, Into to Wine, and Hotel Management.

Marie is employed by the Sanctuary Hotel at Kiawah. In the summer, she is the Head Bartender at the Loggerhead Grill, the hotel's pool and beach restaurant; the rest of the year, she is a server at hotel's The Jasmine Porch restaurant.  Marie is currently participating in The Sanctuary's twelve-month Leadership Training Program, which develops skill sets for upper-level positions in the hospitality industry.

"My job is always changing and challenging," says Marie. "My main concern is the guests and I am constantly looking for new ways to make their experience unique and special.  It requires you to be focused, energetic, and able to juggle many responsibilities at one time. But I am constantly learning things in school that help me in my job; they go hand-in-hand."

What's Up in Washington?
Federal Update - Please take note
During September, Catherine Dority made 2 trips to Washington, DC, on behalf of the Association.  First, she joined other tourism leaders from South Carolina for a Congressional members' reception.  In attendance were Sen. Lindsey Graham, Sen. Jim DeMint, Congressman John Spratt, Congressman Henry Brown and Congressman Joe Wilson.  On the second night, the SC Association of Tourism Region's hosted a reception for congressional staff.  It was a great time to network and everyone was very positive.

The second trip encompassed assisting the CACVB Sales Department with the Spirit of SC reception and most importantly attending a meeting on Spousal Travel Deductions.  Sen. Graham and Cong. Brown's offices organized a very important meeting involving representatives from AH & LA, US Travel Association, National Restaurant Association and the National Club Association.  There was also staff present from Congressman Neil Abercrombie's (Hawaii) office and the Republican Study Committee.  With the Travel Promotion Act advancing quickly, it will allow the national industry associations a chance to bring Spousal Travel Deductions to the forefront.  Be on the lookout for a stong push for a grass roots campaign.  We'll need letters of support from local businesses and will supply you with all the relevent information in the coming weeks.
Update from CACVB
