The Culinary Institute at Trident Technical College
A student at The Culinary
Institute of Charleston working toward his Associates Degree in Hospitality and
Tourism Management, Nathan Hamric is from Staunton, Virginia. He has had a wide
variety of experience in the hospitality industry over the past 12 years,
working in restaurants in just about every position, from server, to bartender,
host dishwasher, line cook, supervisor, and corporate trainer. Nathan was a Supervisor of Dining Room
Operations at a small private college, Banquet Manager for a private club, and an
Assistant Manager of a Hospitality staffing firm.
In his present position as Food
and Beverage Manager at the Hilton Garden Inn, Charleston Airport, Nathan
oversees dining room and room service operations, completes beverage inventory
and ordering, and assists with banquets and events. His favorite thing about
his job? "Making my guests comfortable and happy."
"I have learned a
tremendous amount at CIC, in various classes such as Hotel Management,
Marketing and Purchasing," says Nathan.
These classes gave me a lot of insight about the business operations. I
plan to graduate this May and I would like to continue my education. I hope to obtain my Bachelors degree in
Hospitality and Tourism Management at the College of Charleston."

At the forefront of the industry...
The federal per diem rate is expected to be announced by the General Services Administration in mid-August. Senator Lindsey Graham's office has continued to work on behalf of the Charleston area to ensure that we do not see a major change in the current rate of $141 per night. We will issue an announcement as soon as we hear from the GSA.
Get the facts from AHLA's website on:
If you have other concerns, please contact us so that we may discuss the issues during our September trip.

A Public - Private Partnership that works!
Ever had an idea to make your business better and not known how to execute it? Next time, ask Dave Holscher, Charleston Area Convention Center Complex, and Maureen Ginty, SMG. Wanting to see a stronger workforce in events/facilities management, they teamed up with the College of Charleston's Department of Hospitality & Tourism and the Department of Arts Management to offer a new course in Fall 2009 titled Venue and Events Management for Arts, Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Class.
"I look forward, on behalf of SMG and the City of
North Charleston, to providing the College of Charleston HTMT and ARTM students with a real
life, hands on educational experience in venue and event management to better
prepare them for their career opportunities and successes through this unique
class being primarily taught on the PAC stage" says Dave Holscher.
The expense of the class is being underwritten by SMG in
conjunction with the City of North Charleston donating the use of PAC for the
class and their produced and presented events resulting in potential
scholarship money back to the students through the success of these PAC events. Curriculum will allow students to see production, execution and sales efforts that go into concerts, sporting events and large-scale fesitvals. The College of Charleston also welcomes Dr. Jim Downey as the new chairperson of the Hospitality and Tourism Management department. We look forward to meeting and working with him in the future!
