Charleston area's Stars of the Industry
Every year, the Hospitality Association
of South Carolina recognizes industry professionals who represent the
state's Stars of the Industry. This year's award winners will
be honored at the Stars of the Industry Awards Luncheon, Monday,
February 18th at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia.
While there are literally hundreds, if
not thousands of Stars in the hospitality industry in South Carolina,
the following people from the Charleston area made significant contributions
during 2007 to be recognized as this year's Stars of the Industry... RESTAURATEUR OF THE YEAR DICK ELLIOTT, Maverick Southern Kitchens, Charleston
The name of his company tells it all - Dick Elliott became a maverick in the restaurant industry by helping develop three of Charleston's
most popular restaurants, by developing a highly successful culinary
store and by being elected as the first restaurateur ever to serve as
president of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, the nation's
oldest Chamber of Commerce. Elliott's Charleston restaurants include Slightly North of Broad; High Cotton; and Old Village Post House in Mt. Pleasant. Elliott recently ventured outside the Charleston market by opening the new High Cotton Restaurant in Greenville. Dick
has extensive legal, business and journalism experience. Prior to
becoming involved in the restaurant industry, he was a trial lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia for twelve years and corporate counsel in the carpet industry for six years. Dick serves on the Board on numerous boards in the Charleston area.
FRONT OF THE HOUSE LODGING EMPLOYEE Eddie McBride, Courtyard by Marriott Charleston Riverview "One would think that after numerous years of holding the same job as concierge, a crack in the armor of customer service would at times show, but that is definitely not the case at all with Eddie McBride of the Courtyard Charleston Downtown Hotel," remarked property general manager John Boyd. "It seems Eddie has grown with the property over the years having been one of its first employees, as has his reputation as a consistent, top-notch service provider at this property and about town." Eddie frequently offers to provide assistance when faced with scheduling gaps, jumps in to calm upset guests, and always cultivates goodwill, both on property and off. In addition to being devoted with spirit and fervor on the job, Eddie helps champion fundraising for the Children's Miracle Network in Charleston.

MENTOR OF THE YEAR CHEF BOB CARTER, Peninsula Grill, Charleston Chef Carter, one of our state's most recognized chefs, has worked with students at Wando High School for the past two years, helping their ProStart team win the state championship and compete in the nationals in Charlotte. Carter, who along with the Holliday Companies owner Hank Holliday, has been instrumental in helping develop and improve Charleston's post-secondary culinary programs. Over
30 high school teachers attended a dinner at Peninsula Grill where
Carter mentored high school students who prepared a meal that could be
used in a competition. Each teacher talked about how inspirational it was to see a chef of his magnitude helping train tomorrow's chefs and cooks.

BACK OF THE HOUSE LODGING EMPLOYEE - HAROLD WASHINGTON, Courtyard by Marriott Charleston Riverview Hired just before a major property renovation and coming into a property that had not had a chief maintenance engineer for some time, Harold Washington led the Courtyard team through renovations and upgrades during the peak of the tourism season. Harold soothed guests' complaints about non-functioning air conditioning units and motivated the entire staff through the complicated process of property improvements and guest satisfaction. Always willing to go out of his way for others, Washington received the JHM Hotels Rookie of the Year Award for his strong ethical, devoted, technically adept and motivated manner of handing building maintenance and customer satisfaction.
