Brush Up on Your Charleston History

CHARLESTON: HISTORY and INSPIRATION, FALL 2007, Continuing Education Course

Once again, the Culinary Institute of Charleston at Trident Technical College is offering the Charleston: History and Inspiration

The course is for those who want to learn more about the City and the Lowcountry. Each semester the session offers new or different information about our area. This fall's topics are no exception. Focusing on many of the social and "high season" elements of life in earlier days, The Roaring 20's and Summerville retreats are examples of presentations. For the more serious historical elements, Graveyards of the 1800's and the Old Slave Market Museum are part of the program plan---to name a few. Each night, the class includes two different presentations with a break for enjoying food samples from Lowcountry recipes.

Anyone can take the course-those who just want to learn more about our "neighborhood," those aspiring to become licensed tour guides, or those who are tour guides and ready for recertification. All are welcome. Some students enroll each time the course is offered because they know new information will be presented.

Four Tuesday evenings: September 18 and 25; October 2 and 9

6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Building 920, Room 407, Culinary Institute of Charleston at Main Campus, Rivers Avenue, Trident Technical College

Costs: $ 89.00

Calling all Volunteers!
Judges needed for 2008 High School Competitions

How would you like to help develop a strong future workforce, rekindle the passion you once had for the industry, show your operation in a positive light and have a lot of fun-all at once, in a few hours?

The Tourism and Hospitality Education Foundation (THE Foundation) is currently recruiting industry judges for its high school competitions. The South Carolina ProStart Student Invitational, which focuses on culinary arts and restaurant management, will be held January 28 & 29 at the Sheraton in Myrtle Beach. The South Carolina Lodging Management Program Student Invitational is set for February 29 and March 1 at the new Hilton Hotel in Columbia.

Thanks to special grant funding available this year, THE Foundation will provide judges' hotel rooms and meals.

What sets these programs apart from other school activities is their industry orientation. Students study hospitality management in school using textbooks written and published by the national associations. They demonstrate the skills and knowledge they get in class and on-the-job at the state Invitationals, where they compete for medals, trophies and scholarships.

Judges not only have the opportunity to provide valuable feedback to students who are considering careers in hospitality, but they may also recruit promising young competitors for after school and summer jobs.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Monica Miller, Director of Education for the Hospitality Association of South Carolina, at 803-765-9000, ext. 304 or monica@schospitality.org.
