My Deck Garden
by Denise Hedges
I've always wanted a deck garden. This year, my sweet boyfriend created one for me. We talk a lot about doing things that bring you joy. Well, a picture's worth a thousand words, so I'll just show you what I look out at as I coach every day. It's brought me a lot of joy. It's a little bit of beauty that represents quiet and peace of mind in my world. In between coaching calls or in the midst of a crazy busy day, I go out and dead-head flowers and it chills me out and centers me. It's been a busy year and there's some work involved in putting this all together and keeping the plants happy. And you're seeing only about half the deck. We have some beautiful red, white, and blue hanging baskets and a big spreading bougainvillea too! (Every time my one year old grand-daughter sees the flowers, she says, "Ooooooooo.") It would have been easy to say, "Oh, let's forget it. We can do the deck garden next year." How sad that would have been. And now, instead of nothing, we have a floral collage. I can't imagine having missed the show. It's been spectacular. What do they say? Don't postpone joy. That's good advice.
