What Your Email Address Says About You

Don't you just love it when someone corrects your grammar?

 

What?  Not so much?

 
Yeah, it's irritating, even though you know that ... most of the time anyway ... the person doing the correcting is looking out for your best interests.  They don't want you to look or sound bad.

 

Well, that's the spirit in which I offer the following bit of advice.  It's unsolicited and potentially uncomfortable feedback, but you need to hear it, because you may be doing something that makes you look unprofessional without even knowing it.

 
What does your email address say about you, your business, and your professionalism?  More than you might think.

 

It's not like a phone number where they assign one to you.  Most people participate in the creation of their email address.  That means you open yourself up to judgment around your choice.  In this respect, it's kinda like having a personalized license plate on your car.

And some choices just don't cut it if you're seriously interested in projecting a professional image.


Did you know that AOL and Yahoo addresses are considered old fashioned now, so having an address like Barbara@yahoo.com or Barbara@aol.com sends the message to a good number of potential clients that you're out of touch or technically unsophisticated. 

 

Ouch.  Sorry.


A Gmail address is slightly better as is one you get through your email service provider ... Barbara@charter.net, Barbara@san.rr.com, etc. ... but neither of these is as good as getting your own domain name.

 

Barbara@BusinessBreakThroughInstitute.com simply works better.  It shows you're professional simply because you're serious enough about what you do to have a domain name.  And there's no reason not to have one.  They're less than $10 a year and they're not hard to get.  Plus, you don't need to have a website to have a domain name.

 

It may seem silly to even concern ourselves with something that has so much to do with style and so little to do with substance, but people judge a book by its cover and, believe it or not, their first impression of you might very well come from your email address.  


You certainly don't want people dismissing you as someone who's not a serious professional because of something that's so small and easy to change.

 

By the way, the other thing you don't want to do is use cutesy usernames.  Best to use your real name ... Barbara ... or Barbara.Mencer ... or even CoachBarbara, rather than awesomecoach or marketerextraordinaire.   

Again, the issue is one of professionalism. 

So ... the bottom-line:  Get yourself a domain name that gives you the look and feel of a professional.
