"Patch Tuesday" - August 14
"Patch Tuesday" is the day each month that Microsoft releases their newest security updates, typically the second Tuesday of the month. This month includes nine updates, including five marked "critical", and four rated as "important". For a full breakdown, check out the Microsoft Security Bulletin posted on line.
The critical patches impact Microsoft Windows, Office, and server software, so this affects just about everyone.
A "critical" patch is defined by Microsoft as "a vulnerability whose exploitation could allow the propagation of an Internet worm without user action". As a general rule, all critical patches should be installed as soon as possible. Note that many of the patches require a reboot for installation. Also, if you have a managed service support plan with us, all patches are tested before installation.
Internet Explorer, which is typically patched every other month, will receive its third consecutive monthly patch this week. For more general notes about the security patches, check out the post on ZDNet. |
More Phishing Scams!
We saw a few more of these emails this month. "Phishing" emails are fake emails created to steal your personal information or infect your system with malware. The latest variation was "Your outstanding online AT&T bill" . Last month we reported on other variations "from" UPS and LinkedIn.
Stay alert! - Don't open these emails! We have seen several of these messages in our inboxes (takes a while for spam filters to catch up), and many clients have called to report problems. Slow down and check the email carefully before taking action. |
How long should I hang onto my computer?
We get asked this question a lot: "How long should I hang onto my computer before I replace it with a new one? Typically our rule of thumb is three years for a laptop/desktop, and five years for a server.
Recently we got a call from a client struggling to create a PDF on an old system. In the latest version of Microsoft Office, you can simple choose "save as PDF" and you don't need any extra software.
If your system is slow, but now old enough to replace, we recommend adding more memory (RAM). Great performance improvement for not a lot of money. You may also consider a solid state hard drive. I just installed one on my own laptop, and its MUCH faster. |
