"Patch Tuesday" - June 12
"Patch Tuesday" is the day each month that Microsoft releases their newest security updates, typically the second Tuesday of the month. This month includes seven updates, including three marked "critical", and four rated as "important". For a full breakdown, check out the Microsoft Security Bulletin posted on line.
The critical patches impact Microsoft Windows, Office, and the .NET framework, so this affects just about everyone. Specifically, vulnerabilities in the remote desktop protocol, Internet Explorer and the .NET framework could allow remote code execution. For a quick general description of the updates and their significance, check out the post on ZDNet.
A "critical" patch is defined by Microsoft as "a vulnerability whose exploitation could allow the propagation of an Internet worm without user action". As a general rule, all critical patches should be installed as soon as possible. Note that many of the patches require a reboot for installation. Also, if you have a managed service support plan with us, all patches are tested before installation. |
Change your LinkedIn Password!
LinkedIn has confirmed that over 6.5 million passwords were breached at their site and uploaded to a Russian hacking forum. Users are encouraged to change passwords. LinkedIn users should have received instructions from LinkedIn regarding how to change their password, but there won't be a link in the email. This caveat is crucial because there has been a wave of "phishing" emails from " password" with a subject line of " Reset your LinkedIn Password". These emails are spoofed (they're fakes, not really from LinkedIn), and you should NOT open these emails.
To change your password on LinkedIn, find your name at the upper right hand corner and select "settings" from the pull down menu. You'll be taken to a page where you can change all your settings, including your password. Look for the password link towards the upper left hand corner under your photo and primary email address.
Always beware of phishing emails. In general, banks and sites like LinkedIn never send out unsolicited password re-set links. The only time you should receive a legitimate email like this is if you have specifically requested a password reset directly on the web site.
When a site like this gets hacked, it's also a reminder to never use the same password on multiple sites.
You can read more about LinkedIn's response to the breach on the LinkedIn Blog.
The online dating site eHarmony also had a related breach and 1.5 million passwords were compromised. For more information on both breaches, check out the article in InformationWeekSecurity. |
