Twitter Mouse-Over Bug
Twitter created a big news frenzy yesterday when a serious security flaw emerged that affected the White House Press Secretary and the wife of Former British Prime Minister, Sarah Brown, among many others. The security flaw enabled Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and affected users who merely moved their mouse over the links - they didn't even have to click on the links. The worm posted gibberish out to the 100,000 followers of the White House Press Secretary prompting him to tweet: "My Twitter went haywire - absolutely no clue why it sent that message or even what it is ... paging the tech guys...".

The security flaw was quickly fixed by Twitter by 10:23am and they wrote on their blog: "The vast majority of exploits related to this incident fell under the prank or promotional categories." "Users may still see strange retweets in their timelines caused by the exploit. However, we are not aware of any issues related to it that would cause harm to computers or their accounts. And, there is no need to change passwords because user account information was not compromised through this exploit."

The event also shows how Twitter has gone mainstream as an international communication tool - "They're just as much in the crosshairs as Microsoft, Adobe, and Facebook," said Beth Jones, a senior threat researcher at Sophos. It also highlights how vulnerable users are every day on the Internet - Stay alert!

Green Data Centers from Yahoo:
Here's an idea that's so simple it's brilliant! Yahoo opened the Yahoo Computing Coop in upstate New York Yesterday, big enough to house 50,000 servers. It's nicknamed the Coop because the design resembles a Chicken Coop - long thin buildings with plenty of ventilation designed to maximize air flow. In the cool upstate New York climate, they estimate that the new data center design will consume 40% less energy and 95% less water for cooling. The building was supported in part by a grant from the Department of Energy. It's a very simple idea, but no one was doing it! See the photos and read more at Fast Company.
