Microsoft Critical Security Update
You may or may not have already seen this in the news, but just in case, we wanted to make sure you had the information.

Microsoft released a critical, "out of band" security update a few days ago (January 21, 2010). Consider this a "critical plus" update since it was important enough to release outside of the normal schedule.

The security update addresses vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer that could result in remote code execution, so it's very important to make sure you get the update installed immediately if you haven't already.

For more information, refer to Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-002

If you scroll down the list found in the bulletin, you'll find your operating system and component and follow the link for your version of Internet Explorer to get to the update page.

For Windows XP SP2 or SP3 with Internet Explorer 7 (which is most common among our clients), the update is found in KnowledgeBase article KB978207

If you're on Ekaru's managed service this update will be pre-tested and automatically installed (and we'll be cross-checking). If you're managing your own updates, or if you're using Automatic Updates, double check to ensure it's installed, and not just downloaded.

Not sure if you have the update installed already? Getting peace of mind is easy. Go to "Start", "Control Panel", "Add or Remove Programs", and check the box at the top of the list to "Show Updates". Scroll down the list to look for Windows Internet Explorer Software Updates. You should see a listing for "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB978207) with a recent date (January 21 or later).

Note that under the new Massachusetts Data Protection Law going into effect March 1, 2010, up to date security patches will be required by state law for all systems connected to the Internet that store personal information.
