Microsoft Windows 7 - Generally Available October 22
Microsoft announced this week that its new Windows 7 operating system will be generally available to the public on Oct. 22, well ahead of its original schedule and in time for the holiday shopping season. The release to manufacturing will occur in July, so computer manufacturers will have time to get systems ready for the Fall.

The new operating system was originally planned for rollout at the beginning of next year, but Microsoft is releasing it early. Releasing the new operating system early is generally viewed as an admission that the unpopular Vista operating system was a bad idea.

Microsoft confirmed it will be offering an upgrade program for people who buy new systems before October and don't want to be "stuck" with Windows Vista. There are no details available yet, so stay tuned.
